The Knights of St John of Jerusalem, called of Malta, that is, the Order of Malta even have a liturgy for this church. However, the newest Grandmaster, installed in dubious circumstances, banned its priests from offering the Mass of Ages publicly. I suspect that ban covers Medieval uses of the old Roman Rite.

They only allow the Novus Ordo Missæ of Paul VI in there. All of the Susan's of the parish council are there reading the gospels in the vernacular and with their eucharstic lay ministers.

@@johnnotrealname8168 no the Kyrie when it began to be sung during Mass would not have been chanted like it was nowadays. I'm not sure how old the Mass XIII (Mass setting for the Kyrie used in the video) chants are but I don't think they're as old as OP is saying.

Hello, Mr. Handsome. The first time I visited Jerusalem, I woke up early and rushed to the old city to visit the church. I scrambled through the Christian quarter, while most shops were closed, having only been to the old city the day before. Somehow I made my way to the church. It was about 7:30am. The church was abandoned, tourists hadn't overtaken the space yet, and the ghosts of the past were everywhere. Fantastic! I would love to visit Akko, for instance, with someone like you. I have been to Jaffa on several occasions, running up through the seaside entrance, imaging King Richard doing the same through the narrow streets to the main courtyard. I enjoy your videos immensely! Thank you so much for posting. We will be there again in November, after a cycling trip through Jordan and Israel. All the best!

Great Video… Visited Jerusalem in ‘ 92, after the 1st Gulf War…tourism was 1/2 of what it was and there weren’t throngs of tourists… the Christian sites were relatively quiet… visited the Holy Sepulchre 8 times…a fascinating place…one can almost feel the passage of time and the ages of this sacred place…

great account, these camcorder style captures are often the best to make one feel they are there.

I couldn't help but notice the man with his baseball cap on inside the church. Really?? I guess he wasn't taught to remove his cap when entering a CHURCH, especially when they're having mass.

I’m big into the architectural traditions of my European ancestors, from Portugal and Spain all the way across the Continent through Asia Minor and into the Holy Land. 8:34 oh my gosh! So those cross arches are VERY reminiscent of cross arches present in the Ravenna Ostrogoth buildings of Theodoric’s Tomb and Basilica San Vitale and the Galla Placidia. The Gothic contributions to Romanesque architecture are severely understated by modern academics and it drives me crazy. But I see these characteristics in SO many later Germanic architectural traditions. The modern term Gothic as a pejorative to describe Germanic architecture and art reminds me of how Frederick took the nickname Barbarossa allegedly for his red beard, but I think he was owning his heritage and saying “oh you Italians think we’re Barbarians, huh? How about you say it to my face?” As he marches his army back to Italy for the third time. Holy Roman Emperor, indeed.

I was there recently too. 9th and 11th of August. It’s beautiful!

Did you notice the ladder on the wall. Because of the status quo, that ladder may not be moved. The Church has been renovated under Israel's liberation in 1967. Before 1967, all Holy places in Jerusalem were neglected and dilapidated, holy sites were used by Jordanians as latrines and ancient stones removed and used to build houses.

Going there on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land this month and can hardly wait - to walk where Christ has walked and lived.

Stone of the anointing is a traditional belief it's not been proven by archaeologist. Although archaeologists do believe that the actual stone of the anointing is located within the same area.

I prefer gto believe that the Garden Tomb, outside the city where you can see Golgotha, hill definitely looks like a skull, is where Jesus was buried. I have been to both sites.

I wanted to check on this before I posted...King Fulk was my 24th great grandfather. Love history and finding my far removed family members played a part in history.

I love how they restored the tomb itself to it proper form. I wish the patriarchs would do the same to outside of the church. It doesn't need to look like St. Peter's Basilica, but I feel like should always compliment the importance of this place.

Despite being a Protestant, these sites are interesting for me to see. I understand the historical importance of such sites, even though I question the accuracy of the claims for these sites.

I don't know enough about the late Roman era to comment on the authenticity. But honestly, I feel that most people expressing doubts about the authenticity are fairly fuzzy on early Christian history as well. For me what's relevant is the way these sites were viewed in the Crusader period.

It's the Kyrie. Lord have mercy,Christ have mercy,Lord have mercy. It's part of the mass and still often chanted especially in traditional Catholic parishes.

Is that an Orthodox mass or a western mass?

Is there any orthodox presence in Jerusalem?

@Hona Hona I actually had no idea. I always assumed the Latins took over when they took the Holy Land during the Crusades and just supplanted the Orthodoxy sects.

There is Only One True Church. And it is the Church Christ founded upon, Not Andrew, Not St. Seraphim, not whatever eastern orthodox saint, but, wait for it..... PETER. One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

All of the Early Church Fathers testified to the primacy of the Succesor of St Peter who was the Bishop of, not Constantinople, not Alexander, nor Antioch....not even the Holy City of Jerusalem, but rather, the Bishop of Rome. Yes, there is a significant Orthodox presence in Jerusalem, mainly Arab Christians from the Greek rite. I have a few relatives there as my maternal grandfather originates from the holy city though he later moved to Galille where he settled and married my grandmother, then 1948 happened and his village was depopulated but his brothers continued living in Jerusalem though one later moved to Jordan.

Who has (for lack of a term that escapes me) "jurisdiction" over the church? heard a Latin kyrie, but that could mean anything these days.

Interestingly, as I understand it the kings tombs were there until the 19th century. They were destroyed during some of the upheaval during that time.

That church and its contined existence is a testament to Crusaders' building achievement that put them as more legitimate heirs of Rome than the byzantines. And I have so many examples in head.

I cant belive there are women wearing hats at mass that is so rude and disrespectful I can't hardly believe
