There's something about the lighting in early TF2 maps that is really defined, like you can tell how old some maps are based on how the lighting looks.

I really love cp_collis! The waterfall us actually really cool, because not only is it just a unique idea, but the door behind it is connected to that green light, and it'll turn red when it opens. So you can know exactly when someone is pushing, even a cloaked spy!

Funnily enough, the version of cp_labor you looked at is actually an updated version of the map I was working on for some 4v4 mixes some years back, it was never finished though which is why the lighting is fucked. The original map has doors and windows too small to get through etc., weird time capsule for sure.

That footage you found of Highlander on ctf_chaos is also fascinating in the way that Pyro is playing aggressive-flank with the Soldier here. Seeing that compression blast was just added around that time, it makes sense that it took a bit of time for players to realize how strong of a Medic/Combo bodyguard he is.

23:25 on cp_collis when the door is open the light at the side changes to red, so you don't need someone constantly watching the door from the side. It's a really interesting design choice.

wow, actually a pretty cool video. I've seen many of these maps in the classic frag videos and clips, but never actually knew of their names. I knew about a lot of VilePickle's old mapping stuff, but these other ones are definitely quite obscure from the sounds of it. Also props to Minty/Katsu, they've been archiving and collecting these old maps for a while, they're doing good work :) I like surfing for old source game maps and websites as well.

I also did this sort of thing for fun! I focused more on RGL and ESEA as I'm from NA, but it was super interesting to go back in time and see what maps were played on back in the day. One interesting map that I found super strange was cp_bazillion_rc2, which was played in Season 9 of ETF2L sixes. Super weird map with a mid that was split in half. Some other maps that saw play in ESEA was Mainline in Season 6 (Summer 2010) and more recently Cardinal and Propaganda (Seasons 28/29 & 30/31 resp., May 2018 - June 2019). Glad to see this put into a video! I didn't even consider 4s or 8v8! Really enjoyed it!

Ah, these maps come from a time before standardization and a a series of informal rules were established for what constitutes good map design. So, map developers just went absolutely wild with whatever idea they had regardless of if it worked or played well. It was very exciting, but I'm also thankful those rules were established so we could have maps that were consistently fun to play on and didn't feel like one-time gimmicks.

Indulge is a fantastic map honestly, the only downer is that second *looks* great aesthetically but in terms of its design/practicality it just makes no sense. The small bit of elevation helps it stand out but that's about it. It really should be a three tiered tower, where mid is on the 2nd floor and the 1st and 3rd allow for alternative routes to attack from. From either side you enter on you still get to see where exactly the control-point is since the mid-floor on that tower would be basically at eye-level when getting to that open space.

I remember watching a video of a comp game on cp_labor a long time ago. Most notably, this was from the time before the Stickybomb Launcher had its damage ramp-up reduced to 120%, its aerial splash radius reduced and before there was a server command to turn off random crits (back when random crits didn't have the same rate limit and possibly during the same time explosives unintentionally had a higher critical chance than normal weapons). So the gameplay in the video was nothing but Demomen flying around unleashing 150% ramp-up stickybombs and crits on each other. Total chaos.

ctf_chaos was in rotation for the No Heroes CTF server and i can confirm even with non highlander rules while it is chaos it was also really enjoyable on a 32 player match. Just constant action outside with both sides vying for ground and the occasional uber into the base that break the sentry walls for intel snatching. Even topside got lot of attention. One of my favorites and i hope people either reuse the map or modify it to accomadate the newer weapons introduced since the uber update and beyond. It could use small tweaks.
