There's something about the lighting in early TF2 maps that is really defined, like you can tell how old some maps are based on how the lighting looks.

How is it different?

It's more softer in a lot of cases, I also noticed light entities being used rather than light_spot like most modern TF2 mappers@@kittycatdreamz

Yeah I love how rough around the edges they are, it's really charming and nostalgic. Mad cozy vibes. Kinda like your vids 😉
“I might be the last person on this map.” That hit me hard just thinking about how many once-loved maps have not been played for years, and might never be played again.

I really love cp_collis! The waterfall us actually really cool, because not only is it just a unique idea, but the door behind it is connected to that green light, and it'll turn red when it opens. So you can know exactly when someone is pushing, even a cloaked spy!

I played cp_collis on a TF2 random map event I hosted and I was pleasantly surprised by it! It's a favorite of mine now.
Funnily enough, the version of cp_labor you looked at is actually an updated version of the map I was working on for some 4v4 mixes some years back, it was never finished though which is why the lighting is fucked. The original map has doors and windows too small to get through etc., weird time capsule for sure.

I remember cp_labor being in a Jerma and Star video wayyyyy back in the day. I think it was a video where they were playing on an 100% crits server. Very nostalgic!

That footage you found of Highlander on ctf_chaos is also fascinating in the way that Pyro is playing aggressive-flank with the Soldier here. Seeing that compression blast was just added around that time, it makes sense that it took a bit of time for players to realize how strong of a Medic/Combo bodyguard he is.
23:25 on cp_collis when the door is open the light at the side changes to red, so you don't need someone constantly watching the door from the side. It's a really interesting design choice.
“Make the cart large enough so engi can build on it” that guy was fired and hired by the overwatch team
God I used to play on CTF_Chaos and CTF_Mach4 all the time on a server called No heroes some of my favorite maps of all time

wow, actually a pretty cool video. I've seen many of these maps in the classic frag videos and clips, but never actually knew of their names. I knew about a lot of VilePickle's old mapping stuff, but these other ones are definitely quite obscure from the sounds of it. Also props to Minty/Katsu, they've been archiving and collecting these old maps for a while, they're doing good work :) I like surfing for old source game maps and websites as well.
23:10 light changes to red when the door is open
fantastic video. I don't watch that much tf2 content anymore but im really glad this got recommended to me out of nowhere.
This was a great video! I remember watching a video where someone was playing baby faces blaster scout on cp_obscure, now I'm racking my brain trying to remember who it was.
Woah, I've played on Waste mid so many times in mge servers, but I'd never seen the rest of the map! This is crazy. Thank you so much for making this video, it's really fascinating.
21:21 not sure if anyone pointed that out yet, but that health kit is actually supposed to be above a rope, but if a player has ropes turned off in their config it just looks like the health kit is floating
Fun to hear that random UKCS namedrop. I was both a Forum Moderator for them and a server admin on their TF2 servers. Cool video!
Old veteran here. Big blast of nostalgia. I remember most of these maps from bizarre random servers back in the days where I played TF2 25 hours a day.
if that light gimmick near the waterfall on cp_collis changes when someone is there, that sounds really cool like, you know that someone is there, but you dont know who
Really enjoying these TF2 videos!
Man, you're so underrated! I will subscribe! Love this vid, just wow how underrated you are
cheers for the rotabland map db shoutout, i guess this video is why someone commented on the reddit thread after 12 years 😛
These maps (mostly) look awesome. Thank you for linking the archives too.
Very interesting stuff, some of these maps feel really nostalgic, despite me never playing on any of them.
this was so good, you're worrying about the length of this video and I could honestly have watched another 20 mins of it cp_follower and cp_obscure dredged up SO many memories dude. loved it.
Super wonderful video, great job!
4:23 I'm pretty sure cp_lulz started as a TFC map, I recognize the layout from videos of people playing GoldSrc stuff. I doubt it was ever an official map in TFC but it was likely ported over from there, hence the strangeness.
this was a great watch, i hope u make more of these
Very relaxing video.
Extremely underrated video. Playing on old/forgotten maps always evokes some sort of hidden memory in your brain alongside the nostalgia given by it.
cp_castle looks like a TFC map someone mape for one (1) server. Like, that's the vibe
i know the video is long already, but i rly thought cp_bazillion was also rly interesting design wise, all of these older maps in general, bold ideas and rough around the edges. cool video bro, patiently waiting for part 2
This might be out there, but a video on forgotten trade maps would make my year
15:46 This section reminds me on Halo's Zanzibar, Specifically the Halo 3 version
Here comes the algorithm plane~ Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr~ Good stuff. Not interested in TF2 comp honestly, but seeing old and forgotten TF2 stuff is always nice.
Have been playing since beta and a fan of comp since vanilla TV. Such nostalgia for some of these maps, either watching, playing or casting on them. Even then, some I'd never heard of!
You need way more views, very enjoyable!
Damn this takes me back
23:30 the light on the right side of the door is turning green whenever its closed and red when it is opened, so you can tell if someone has opened it, but you can't tell what class they are
This was really interesting to watch, I recognize some of these maps from really old Ster's videos lol
The one that for sure is that map in "what is c tap tf2" video at the first rocket jumping from distance to distance, that map is obviously forgotten
7:57 and that, my friends, is why i think that tf2's playerbase really hasn't changed that much
I remember how Ive been playing ctf_chaos and cp_castle when I was like 12 years old kiddo playing lan competitives with my team of 20+years old dudes... damn, brah, u made me remember the childhood, brah!
I also did this sort of thing for fun! I focused more on RGL and ESEA as I'm from NA, but it was super interesting to go back in time and see what maps were played on back in the day. One interesting map that I found super strange was cp_bazillion_rc2, which was played in Season 9 of ETF2L sixes. Super weird map with a mid that was split in half. Some other maps that saw play in ESEA was Mainline in Season 6 (Summer 2010) and more recently Cardinal and Propaganda (Seasons 28/29 & 30/31 resp., May 2018 - June 2019). Glad to see this put into a video! I didn't even consider 4s or 8v8! Really enjoyed it!
Ah, these maps come from a time before standardization and a a series of informal rules were established for what constitutes good map design. So, map developers just went absolutely wild with whatever idea they had regardless of if it worked or played well. It was very exciting, but I'm also thankful those rules were established so we could have maps that were consistently fun to play on and didn't feel like one-time gimmicks.
Your new TF2 videos really make me a bit nostalgic for old early 2010s TF2 KZread. Youve already become one of my fav TF2 KZreadrs!
Banger vid 👌
I regret not finding out about your channel sooner
Cp_waste was a arena Randomizer Map for alot of servers it used to pop up in old Star_ videos.
History of comp would be very interesting, i really hope you pick that project up
Indulge is a fantastic map honestly, the only downer is that second *looks* great aesthetically but in terms of its design/practicality it just makes no sense. The small bit of elevation helps it stand out but that's about it. It really should be a three tiered tower, where mid is on the 2nd floor and the 1st and 3rd allow for alternative routes to attack from. From either side you enter on you still get to see where exactly the control-point is since the mid-floor on that tower would be basically at eye-level when getting to that open space.
Im always intrigued by now empty, once super popular maps. I used to boot up old battlefield games and get into a custom mode just to explore maps like ghost town, fall of berlin, etcetera. There's something cozy, yet sad about it
*turns italian, hand posture* "Where is mid?"
The light next to the waterfall on collis turns red instead of green when open to indicate somebody standing there.
Nice vid bro hope u get more subs
I wish i could have played tf2 when community servers run actual custom maps, and not just highertower
this is really good editing! you deserve 1k subs. this is way better than anything i can make.
I somehow never considered that waste from mge is an actual map :o Cant wait to learn about cp_endif
super nostalgic - not because i ever played on many of these, but i do recognize a lot of them from old stabbystabby videos.
Great video
Its interesting to learn ctf used to be semi popular in competitive! Maybe valve was taking comm into consideration!
cp_obscure was recently played in a 6v6 throwback cup in etf2l
3:06 That's... That's the point from Dustbowl...
23:20 Notice the light on the cliff face changes color when the door behind the waterfall is triggered.
Bring the comp history video back I’d Bing watch that immediately.
I remember watching a video of a comp game on cp_labor a long time ago. Most notably, this was from the time before the Stickybomb Launcher had its damage ramp-up reduced to 120%, its aerial splash radius reduced and before there was a server command to turn off random crits (back when random crits didn't have the same rate limit and possibly during the same time explosives unintentionally had a higher critical chance than normal weapons). So the gameplay in the video was nothing but Demomen flying around unleashing 150% ramp-up stickybombs and crits on each other. Total chaos.
wow. that was a trip. the only map i can confidently say i recognise is cp_waste, i played the koth version of that though
ctf_chaos was in rotation for the No Heroes CTF server and i can confirm even with non highlander rules while it is chaos it was also really enjoyable on a 32 player match. Just constant action outside with both sides vying for ground and the occasional uber into the base that break the sentry walls for intel snatching. Even topside got lot of attention. One of my favorites and i hope people either reuse the map or modify it to accomadate the newer weapons introduced since the uber update and beyond. It could use small tweaks.
Thats it oohboy is the type of guy who likes Granary *Reloads Thompsons with Drum Mag* Rattle 'Em Boys!
Tbh follower was one of my favorites for some reason
Insane how little views this video has, it's great
I saw cp_stag very often on zombie (engineer vs. medic) gamemode in 2018/2019. 12:51 was the engineer's favorite spot
The last map's waterfall has a light that turns red when the door opens, so there's a way of telling when a sniper is going to snipe from there.
Cp_labor is rendered fullbright, that’s what is causing the shadow problems. Probably has a leak
cool vid!
its pretty funny that cp_waste mid outlived the rest of the map via being on the mge maplist
Never played competitive myself but I distinctly remember seeing cp_obscure on Lucky Luke’s first Glimpses of Mediocrity. Good to finally know the map’s name!
on cp_collis, second, there's a light that shows if the door is open or not, if closed green, if open red
i could watch a 2 hour video of this.
Cp_stag is actually in the map pool on a server i play on, its pretty fun
finally some good fucking content
came for the moomin pfp, subbed for the banger content
I aspire to be as powerful as the guy who said “French. Lol.”
God, some of these maps look SO familiar to me. I have to have played on at least one of these at some point in my life.
Competitive TF2 is something i know very little about
cool video
ctf_chaos is beautiful, would love to see it in the game
What future videos do you plan to make?
12:45 LMAO it's like a Saw movie trap for the medic at low health. do you go for the pack and abandon your team or get forced? no matter what you are dropping to a player sitting in a corner somewhere.
I’d play all day on a server hosting these maps
Love the video!
I say, cp_castle4 still has a lot of work left to be done. I do know of pl_waste_v2, a tug of war map. Didn't know there were that many variations of Waste.
cp_stag looks like a team fortress forever or TFC map honestly, gives me the same vibes.
god you are right, I wish community servers were still viable to run, all these maps to explore but nowhere to play them
I can’t be the only one who saw cp_erosion and got halo map vibes
I would be interested in playing if you decided to make a server hosting the best of all these forgotten maps.
On the cp_redstone, cp_stage, cp_master, cp_indulge maps, you can still play on the servers of the Team Fortress 2 Classic Custom Weapons mod. If nothing has changed then these maps should be there in rotation
I think I played cp_labor 1v1 against a friend once, but they stomped me so hard I never saw the mid point
I don't even play tf2 and yet i am enjoying this video
