Before Valve dropped their strong TF2 support, it really felt like Cactus Canyon and Asteroid were being set up early to play the part of the Big Finale maps that tie in with the TF2 Comics - with Asteroid being tied into the rocket that escaped Earth with all the Australium. Part of me hopes that one day they might retool Asteroid to actually be that map.

I love Hydro to death honestly. Im mad it never caught on, because unbalanced to a point by design asymmetrical maps are awesome and really shake things up. That said, I understand why its so hard for people to get around on them, and unless you pay attention to the pre-game map to know which two zones are facing off its really hard to know whats going on. Alas lol.

I just nominated Hydro on a London Uncletopia server and got enough people to actually vote for it. At first some people wanted to rtv once the map was on, but we actually played it to the end. It all looked like it will end it a stalement, but in the ende it ended with a win for my team. I had an absolute blast and was glad people didn't abandon the server when the map came on. Playing old and forgotten maps successfully really warms my heart.

Hydro is actually quite fun to play on if you're playing as Engineer. I know this because every time I've played a match on Hydro I've had to play as Engineer because no one else on my team picks Engineer and if you don't have an Engineer defending your point on Hydro you just instantly lose.

I haven't played on any of these maps except Yukon and sort of Hydro if you count TF2C's 4 team variant in literally years, yet some of my earliest memories of the game take place on them. It even made me try to queue up for Pipeline and Nightfall, to no success since it took ages to find a single match that was almost completely dead. Oh well

I miss rd_asteroid, the beta era of rd_asteroid feels like a fever dream now. I distinctly remember one of the earlier variants of the map and it was so fun. Robot Destruction walked so that Player Destruction could run. tc_hydro is an interesting one... it's like a 5cp map with a built-in stalemate breaking mechanic that doesn't work... as theoretically you can keep swapping the middle 4 points back and forth between teams indefinitely, but each cap resets the map, making engineer a little bit harder to turtle

  • @cloudynguyen6527

My tf2 experience started with RD_Asteroid. As a new player, it was satisfying to score points for my team without having to stand on a control point waiting to die. This was where I started playing engineer, because I realized pretty quickly that no sentry= no wins. And as a mostly pyro player (cuz aiming was hard) having all of the cliffs was fun.

A slight cure for a burnt tongue: Drizzle honey or put dry white sugar on the burned area, leave it dangling out of your mouth for like 30 seconds-1 minute, this pulls the liquid from the burn and makes it feel a lot better. This Summer I did a thing where I would play every single map available in TF2 casual. I would queue for all maps, play some time, then quit, and next time I would queue I would remove the maps I've already played. And now I remember the general layout of every single official TF2 map that is commonly available (although I'm not sure if that's much of a rare achievement for someone with ~700 hours of playtime). Every single map except for Nightfall. This map is so forgettable the only thing I remember is the name. My brain was confused for a second when you mentioned it alongside Pipeline (a map I vividly remember). My memory only came back after looking at the map's wiki, but even then I didn't recognize the 3rd stage. Maybe I should go replay it right now, after all I do enjoy the gamemode greatly. I suppose you left out the Arena mode exclusive maps for the next video. I hope you make a more in-depth video about those (plus Cactus Canyon and Asteroid) and discuss the layout since these maps are no longer accessible to the average player. Love your videos!

if i had to describe it, tc_hydro feels like if dustbowl was a 5cp map. i enjoy it sometimes, it's not as confusing as people point it out to be but it's horrendously chokey and small. it has the same problem as asteroid where you have to defend your point, all while while your team is trying to push into the enemy point. if your team is clueless and nobody stays to defend, you'll encounter the infamous "empty hydro point" which will easily be capped before both teams even encounter each other. honestly, hydro would be a tad bit better if every section was opened as a standalone 5cp map. it's gorgeous and canonically, expiration date was set on that same map

i don't actually think hydro has random elements within the layouts. the way it's set up is that the different layouts aren't just individual map chunks separated by the void, but rather each territory is just a point in one contiguous map. so a blu point and a red point are chosen, the routes between them are opened up, and the routes to every other point is closed off. and i'm pretty sure that's the full extent of it, meaning the only random elements should be which points are used to make the round's layout. something like the vents being closed off isn't to shake things up, but to prevent you from wandering into the flank of the completely wrong point i think. i don't know how they managed to make "6cp but the next point keeps randomizing" so confusing, but they sure as hell did incidentally, though, this makes dismantling hydro into a cp_hydro a much simpler affair that it might first seem, to the point where you can easily google several different attempts to do so

True, valve should’ve cashed in when everyone was making roguelikes

My older cousin who got me into tf2 would only play on this one Japanese server that was hydro 24/7. Still makes me nostalgic when I play hydro

ive made at least 14 territorial control maps. i had to redesign the philosophy of the tf2 map design in order to make them more fun. really tiny but fun. it really is an example of "bad map good game mode".

I have fond memories of playing on all of those maps (granted asteroid was less about the playing and more about the weirdness). Beats why all of these have faded while people still play junction…

I like hydro. When I played it there was also a sudden death element to it. I don’t know what it’s like anymore because as you pointed out, it’s a dead map.

My heart aches for Pipeline and Nightfall. I spent my early years of tf2 in 2013 playing Hightower, Pipeline, and Nightfall, with my favorite being Nightfall. With the quickplay system, payload race was considered just as respectable as any of the other gamemodes. I'd search for servers, and pick whichever one had the most players with the best ping running Pipeline. When matchmaking got released and payload race was relegated to sit with the likes of Hydro, Mann Power, and PASS time. Last time I tried searching for a pipeline game, it was swarmed with bots that I couldn't do anything about.

Quickplay servers that looked like they had players but it was just bots was the biggest betrayal of 2014

Pipeline used to be a favourite of mine, but I always got confused between Nightfall and Pipeline based on the names. Nightfall is the one during the day and had a main them to the final stage of a big pipe down the middle, while Pipeline is the one set at night time

Funnily enough, Yukon used to be pretty commonly played in TF2 Classic, which was where I played the map. I personally do not like the map and can see why live TF2 ended up burying it as you pointed it out
