  • @redenginner

    @redenginner

    5 жыл бұрын

    Tumbolisu If you want John Romero levels of perfectionism in your maps id say play it 50-100 times once you have a basic outline. This at least applies to doom maps, and a well play tested TF2 map shouldn’t really be any different.

  • @Tumbolisu

    @Tumbolisu

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@redenginner I only mentioned the number of versions. The number of playtests is roughly twice as high compared to what i mentioned. The reason being that no hobbyist level designer has the god damn time. Only the kind of people who reach alpha version 30 before even considering beta are the ones who will aplytest every version 3 times or more. However, playtesting the same version more than once has the added trouble that your playtesters are gonna get fatique from playing the same shit over and over again. It is simply unrealistic to get 50-100 tests in a game such as tf2.

  • @redenginner

    @redenginner

    From what I could see in that final skybox shot, you could change it from a CTF to a 5CP map easily by adding the extra capture points in those blanl areas, then extending the far sides of the map out for proper spawn locations. Also, the sight lines in those high-ground box rooms that snipers peak out of constantly, you can change it where they have to peak out of either the left or right side and just have a large glass panel where the opening used to be. Therefore, you still have LoS but they have to be more out of the way.

    Old maps are super nostalgic for me. My first map was "koth_octopod". A fullbright dev-texture hell koth map with 8 ways to the point, 4 for each team. The map was too small, so it was pyro hell.

  • @durgun8247
    @durgun82475 жыл бұрын

    I think the problem of the koth maps being too easy to defend can be remedied by making the area around the point smaller and having healthpacks further back, this would make splash damage deal damage to more players and cause more people to retreat allowing the attackers to take the point more easily.

    As a game designer who is trying to make his own game; start with a basic understanding of what your maps purpose is. Are you trying to focus on maps that allow for more mobility? Try having more platforms and open free sections for classes like solider to move about. You want to create something that rewards trick shots and more tricky plays? Try more walls for demo men to bounce their grenades up into and or soldiers to bounce around. You want better flanking spots? Try more corners that allow you to pop off with good use for the back burner and or heavy. You want to reward more range and safe play? Try to create higher platform maps that help protect sniper and other class builds that take on a more safe approach across the map firing. You want a map more focus on sniper battles? Have good angled positions for maps where the snipers can battle and or shoot at each other, focus on one another for less mobile types of snipers. You want more maps that discourage camping? Try having more open entry ways for the player to get through. You want high risk and high reward? Have tricky jumps for maps or even better, open to other strategies to perform. Really the idea is to think about the simple pros and cons of your map designs and ideas and then build upon those ideas and or branch those ideas out. In other words choose your depth and complexity with the maps you design. Do you want more depth to the maps or more complexity? The complexity can be good with having more elements to take advantage of but the depth can allow players to work with the same element about the map in more useful ways.

    One of the stronger criticisms I don't think I'm ever going to find myself accepting is how there's a common mindset of "If it's not competitively viable, it's a shit map." I'm into the idea of making a fun and action-intense map, but when I hear that it has to be competitively viable, it gives that impression that any map I make should be a map that would be played in tournaments or leagues, otherwise it's crap. Which in turn causes me to lose any inspiration in further mapmaking. Which can be sort of a bad thing, if one prefers making maps for casual play more than competitive.

    I have 2 problems with mapmaking. 1) I can't name them. I just don't know how to name my current project... Thought I've been working on it for months 2) I attach too much to my projects. My map's probably ready, but I am too nervous about things like "omg there's no skybox models, people will see clear skybox instead of beautiful landscapes" or "oh no, too low detalisation, I have too add more decals and ambient_generic entities...". All those lead to very beautiful, but TOTALLY unbalanced maps. I am 100% sure my map's complete broken - there are no hight advantages, map's too small (just like the Dustbowl, it's small cp map), water textures are broken + too many ambient sounds I guess. I'll place beta version of my project on Workshop and tf2 maps site. If somebody wants to look at it, I'll place a link over there after a while

It so tall that red snipers sitting in there can see almost the entire map from start to finish. Another themes of this map will be afwull chokepoints, unbearable sentry spots and almost complete lack of health and ammo for attackers. Defenders will have ample supply of health and ammo and its going to be mostly out of reach for attackers. Oh- im going to give the defenders height advantage too.

    I just want to see (or make) a ctf map that plays like a koth. Instead of an easy to turtle intel room and a mid section that is only a battleground. What if you get the intel and have to bring it to an open centerpoint, with the entire map having a koth layout?

    A simple piece of advice I'll give you is to build off your designs, expand them; not to, "fix" them. If you try to worry about, "fixing" them then you'll never fix them.
