I've always thought how the map design is also very comedic on this map. The two teams are fighting over this absurd cliff and choose to traverse the longest possible route when blues starting base is really a few meters away from the final destination. They could have gone a shorter route the whole time if they built some kind of bridge.

17:43 Although that spot is really strong for a red soldier, it has at least 3 major downsides that make the position not braindead to defend. Something to add to that staircase's design. 1) The red soldier has to peek with his left shoulder, and because stock rockets are fired from your right shoulder, you have to expose your whole body to the attackers so the rockets don't hit the door frame. 2) The door is surrounded by a low ceiling and narrow walls, so it's easy to hit him with splash damage, even though he technically has the high ground. 3) That spot can fairly easily be flanked from behind, and in that case, the blu flanker has a major advantage since he's standing on a medkit and an ammo box, so the red soldier has to be very aware of his suuroundings.

Another one of my favorite maps is mvm_decoy. With a tiny bit of investigation, you can discover that the story behind the map is that the Soldier disguised an old abandoned boom town to get the attention of Greymann's robots. It explains the hastily-painted signs decorating the map, the deteriorated buildings, and why "MANN" is splattered on everything.

Two other things to note: Spawn placements and the important mix of low and high ceilings with minimal invisible wall in areas of play. RED's spawns start far away from the points, but quickly grows closer. BLU's starting spawn in is sight of all the actions, while last is far away from the action due to all the walls. Building have low ceiling which hamper the mobility of Soldiers and Demos, while the outside ceiling is high enough that they won't bonk their heads once they learn where the invisible walls are.

Also another point to make: the map "spiral" and viewmodels. RED is constantly having to turn to their right as they go towards the battlefield, blocking some of their sight if they happen to be near a wall on their right side. While the BLU team has the opposite with lots of open area to traverse around on their right side, giving them ample view of everything going on during the match.

Oh man third point on this map is awesome. It's the most open part of the entire map bar none, directly facing the giant cliff BLU is attempting to climb, meaning it's a constant battle of who can keep control over the upper ledge that leads into last. RED obviously starts with the advantage here but with so many ways for BLU to swing around from multiple angles it's a real struggle for RED that they have to be ready and willing to stand their ground and shove BLU team back inch by inch until they're being launched off the cliff.

One thing I really like about upward is the level of aggression this map seems to be built around. Defensive play obviously isn’t bad, but the map is set up to where most of the important areas area either far forward to hold or deep into the defensive hold, so one team needs to take the initiative, and this applies to both sides. On 1st, red need play forward to keep control of stairs and rocks to stop flanks and pushes, and blu need to get up on playground and on the flank in order to break down the defence. On 2nd, one team having control of the hill above the tunnel can decide whether or not the game ends there, as blu can get swarmed and stomped out easily from red players on the hill and at the entrance together. You get the idea

Psst; You should've talked about Frontier as well. Even though only about half the map Is a straight uphill, every single thing you said applies there in a much more varied way because there's elevation stacked on top of elevation in several ways. It always 'looks' like It's red team holding the high ground against blue, but blue spawn after first is captured has them above the cart, leaving only 2 extremely vulnerable positions for Red team to counter-push them, which they will have to do because the ground they are so desperately defending is extremely hard to take back if your hold breaks, so you NEED to be on the constant offensive as the defending team - This gives Engineer's dispenser/sentry massive screentime IMO, both teams have great class opportunity for most of the map (With the exception of red scout on second due to a lack of a third flank route, although getting behind the enemy with Bonk can easily let you distract their team for an obscene amount of time.)

there are also those nuances in map geometry and what you can stand on or not, like spy perches and sneaky engie tele spots and how you can literally ninjaneer on the third point increadibly well, and how you can crouch jump from the right stairs to the point on the third point. its like you said the little things that allow every class to prosper on this map.

I really do wish Valve leaned into their strengths of environmental map-making as a source of worldbuilding and comedy rather than the (albeit very memorable) mess that is the comics. The mystery why RED and BLU do these things is lost now because, for some reason, the writers of the comics decided to explain everything - it would be like if Valve decided to come out with comics about the G-Man’s origins and explained what his motivations were. TF2 was rife with the spytech, Cold War-esque intrigue that I absolutely adored, and Upward is pretty much the perfect example of this subtlety. Plus it’s just fun to play. Can’t forget that.

I'd love to see this for more maps, such a cool way to analyse a map, you could even do one for maps that aren't so good, maybe to show why maps don't work, or why they should but end up not working.

Small tip for blue Spy, on any payload 1st point (and you should do this even if you're not gonna play spy for the rest of the game, or even "good" at spy): **Run to their spawn and destroy their tele entrance** Usually the Red engi will be busy maintaining his sentry and dispencer and won't have time to rebuild the tele (even if he has the Eureka effect, it's a big gamble for the engi to leave his nest for so long, so most won't rebuild it until their nest goes down, or team is literally spawn-camping Blu). This, (in casual context), usually deter people from playing one of the best defence class in the game: Heavy, and passively gives your team a much easier time pushing through the 1st point. In my 5k hrs of both casual, competitive highlander and such, mainly playing med, I saw so many ppl stop playing Heavy and opt for higher mobility classes, which are (generally) more easy to kill compare to a 450HP sentry on legs whenever their tele is down.

I think the small slant that push you cart back, really help with the tension. Giving this, now or never moment, cause the time is usually low due to the defense of the enemy team

good story telling is nice for a map, but one map i remember for being a relaxing place to just do whatever is 2fort. this map is the most calm, peaceful place that there is in tf2. The soundscapes, the forts, the farms and buildings, you can be wherever you want in 2fort and find a relaxing place to be in and theorize about what was happening in that place. "why is red and blue attacking eachother?" "why is there a bridge that connects both places togheter?" "who are they spying on with that computer equipment?" or "what is inside the briefcase that both teams want?" these are all questions someone could theorize and imagine an answer for, making little stories by themselves on what this is all about. the level design of it its pretty bad ngl, but the ambiance its just so nice that it makes me feel like a child in the playground whenever i go into it. Btw, good video man. if you want a more indepth analysis or an different point of view of this 2fort thing, check out germanspeter video on 2fort, it really made me change my view on the map.
