Exploring ARP - Why it doesn't behave like a classic arpeggiator

People have asked many times why Midicake ARP isn’t doing what they expect it to when playing a keyboard.
ARP doesn’t function in the same way as a classic arpeggiator.
In this video I want to explain the key difference and why it makes Midicake ARP pretty special.
So why doesn’t ARP arpeggiate like a classic arpeggiator?

Brilliant! I still get the idea that this is just scratching the surface of an immense area of possibilities. Send one to Jay Hoskins?

Brilliant kit. I think this would be really useful changing with my argon and jd-80.

Thank you for this demo. Are there any plans to make a black case for the arp? I’d really like to have that color option. Thanks 🙏

A number of people have asked about a black case option. It is something we are looking into, possibly for the next production batch, but we cannot promise anything right now.

very nice! i like the live element this has. can you also hook it up via usb to a daw. and send midi notes from the daw to the midicake arp, and let midicake come up with an arpeggio that can then be recoded to midi in the daw again (on a separate track)?

Hi Antoine. Thank you for your comments. There are many ways to use ARP and please forgive me if I misunderstand your question. Here are some suggestions. Change the global octave using the up/down buttons, when in Play mode. If using a MIDI keyboard, the position of the lowest note played will determine the octave of all sequences. Set the octave of an arp sequence using the Octave parameter in Set mode. Automate the octave parameter using modulation. Create 2 arp sequences that are identical but for the octave, then use follow to play them consecutively. I hope these suggestions are helpful. If not, please let me know more about what you are trying to achieve and I'll be happy to help.

Question about when you press just 1 note (just before 5:54) what setting makes it go to another octave? Thanks!

The chord/scale is determined by the note letters played on the keyboard. If you press one note, e.g. C, that is the only note letter available to ARP's sequences. The length of the sequence is explicitly defined by the Steps parameter, in this case 4 steps. So it plays a sequence of 4 notes on the chord/scale containing only C. The resulting sequence would be C3, C4, C5, C6, depending on the other parameters such as Direction and Bounce. On playing 2 keys, e.g. C and E, the resulting sequence would be C3, E3, C4, E4. The benefit is that you always get a 4 note sequence and maintain the musical rhythm (unlike a classic arpeggiator). The v5 firmware update brings a "Classic" mode, which behaves just like the System-1 in this example. There's also an appendix section in the User Manual (midicake.com/manuals) that illustrates how this works in comparison to the ARP Default mode.

@@midicakemidi I gotcha, I just am unsure why it plays c3-c6 instead of four c3's? Thanks!!!!

@@Ericuf That's the difference between classic arps and Midicake ARP. The purpose is to keep the Rhythmic pattern consistent regardless of the number of keys you play. Of course, you can now have ARP play like a classic arpeggiator with the new v5 update.

Brilliant, indeed it is functioning much more as a step-seq generator rather a traditional arpeggiator.

When is this coming to Europe? I mean EU.

Midicake ship to the EU from midicake.com. We do not use resellers as our volumes don't yet justify it and we have not found a solution that offers a better deal for customers than buying direct. You will have to pay import tax, which to EU countries is around 21% (depending on the local rules). If you purchased through an EU reseller you would pay 20% VAT plus markup. In the unlikely event of a problem, Midicake will replace the unit and cover shipping costs as per the T&Cs. I hope that helps.
