Experimental 12" Balsa Glider - Test 2
Ғылым және технология
Brad flies an awesome experimental 12" model in calm weather which results in a personal record free-flight duration for this model of 44.18s.
Build Kits and Plans are available!

Quick Links:
0:13 Flight #1 - 43.70s (Catch)
1:03 Flight #2 - 40.74s (Close Fly-by)
1:50 Flight #3 - 44.18s (Close Fly-over)
This was flown in a late evening in February with no help from thermals so this video shows its true gliding capability. I think next step is to classify this bird and build some more! What do you think?
Model: Undesignated
Wing Span: 12 inches (30.5 cm)

We're just having fun flying some of our best outdoor (CLG) catapult launched gliders.
The Williamson brothers have plans to build more gliders and post more flights -- please [subscribe], like, and comment for more!
Also, were going to get tickets for FliteFest East in Ohio as hosted by the awesome guys at FliteTest-- we hope to see you there!
Enjoy flight and enjoy life!

@@NighthawkGliders Yes, nowadays it's rarely in our city, but it's very important, I can see. ;) I like Your easy gliders very much! I try to build similar glider from foam with similar wing airfoil.
Very impressive.

I’m just starting to make balsa gliders for my grandson and find your videos really helpful. Currently the climate here in uk is cold and damp, and I wanted to ask if gliders should be varnished to prevent them soaking up humidity and dew. Secondly, which material do you recommend for nose weight trimming? All the best!
Awesome flight , never built a flapper but hopefully one day in my off season

Thanks! Glad you like it! If you do build a flapper be sure to post it! 😀
please make a build for this one!
Very stable flights and nice job! Thanks! I like balsa and foam gliders recently, maybe they are better than paper HLG...

Thanks for compliment! Someday we'll be creating some paper gliders and giving them a go... Have you seen the FREEFLIGHT0304 channel (kzread.info/dron/yb5SiM1oIOvdAeyWRGPnMw.html)? These guys have frequent competitions and excellent gliders!

Nighthawk Gliders Yes, I have seen them...and I think that they are very clever. :) I think that is a good and mayba sometimes hard hobby, but it's a good thing in my life too. So if You want let see my pelicatoo glider. It's not perfect, but it can fly nice enough. :) Thanks for your vids, they are very useful and great!
Congratulations! Very beautiful flights. Is it a flapper ?
@NighthawkGliders
7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, it is a flapper! Although, I believe my flaps might be a little too rigid, they are pretty much working as designed. However, the right and left may not be equally balanced (one more flexible than the other) so my glider will do funny thing and roll a lot if I launch it too hard.
@tux603

yes not easy to get both the flaps equally balanced.
Beautiful glider! Where does one get the plans for this?

@Nighthawk Gliders Please give me design of this experimental glider. I want to make same.
Beautiful! Can you explain what function the big gap at the wing root serves? Thanks.
@NighthawkGliders

Mainly, it just looks cool 😎! But aside from that, it allows more flexibility on the trailing edge of the wing where I can bend up or down to help trim the airplane.

Thanks for your quick reply. I cannot help but thinking about vortex drag that usually happens at wing tips, but still your video proves that's not a problem at the wing root. :)
@NighthawkGliders

Yeah, I can’t say there isn’t any vortex drag near wing root. It would be neat to see this in a wind tunnel. I suspect its close proximity to the fuse might disrupt that a bit. But who knows? 🤔
This is really nice flight. Do you have any plan for building, or tutorial?
@NighthawkGliders

Thanks! I have no plans right now on how to build it... but, when I get time to produce another video build series, this may be the very next one! Demand for this seems to be increasing. 😊

Yes, I become interested in flappers too. Sharpenned tools and doing some training on the balsa to get it realy thing without breaking. Thank you in advance.
Wow! Do the wings run parallel to the fuselage? Aside from a great plane/flight do you see any advantage to having the rear vertical stabilizer on the underside as opposed to the top?
@NighthawkGliders

I can’t really explain any science on this. Although, I think it just looks awesome! 😀
@NighthawkGliders

If anything... I think I saw some great DLG gliders with Y-Tails and gave it a try on this model. I imagine the air flowing over the vertical stab is clean and gets no backwash from the wing when it is gliding. One downside. If you launch this glider too slowly, you could get a tail strike on your catapult launcher.
good design . sir may you give the measurement of this glider .

Thanks! Sorry, I don't have the details available right now, but I'll probably have to produce a "how to" video of this one day if people are showing some interest. I still don't even have a name for it yet!

Hey, HonnHero. Thanks for subscribing! The glider in this video is an experimental - not a Sandpiper. But I am editing a 3 part build video on my 12" Sandpiper and will be published soon!

Sorry, we don't have any documented plans for any of our gliders (yet)... We might have to do a how-to video on this one. Thanks for subscribing, we appreciate that and please stay tuned! 😊
Hello, I want to have this model of glider. I will take to teach students to do. Do you have a sample? Thank You Sir.
