Catching Thermals at Flite Fest East

Brad and Bruce flew some gliders at Flite Fest East 2017. Oh, yes, baby... there were thermals!!!

Flite Fest was a blast! It was our first time there. On Sunday morning (the last day) and before we took down our camp, we decided to fly some gliders in an open field.
We tried many gliders to see which one was the best. Bruce flew his ""Eagle Scout"" (a 12 inch glider) while Brad flew "Gamma" (an 18 inch glider.)
Brad and Bruce are brothers-- just having fun building, sharing, and flying various things-- including Catapult Launched Gliders at Flite Fest East in Malvern, Ohio.
You're next action is to [subscribe] to our channel! Heck, we traveled hundreds of miles to make this so, the least you can do is click on a simple little button! (Pretty please, with sugar on top?)
As always, enjoy flight and enjoy life!

Not only have you reignignited my kneading a new flytype, but you have captured the essence of pure Fluid Dynamical Studies! Captain Canardly approved! :D

Such a lovely paradox only a builder can appreciate - we love our planes but are happy to see the fly away (as long as it’s a glorious flight)!

That was SOOOO awesome! I am going to have to find one that I can launch like that the next time I am out riding instead of just launching off the side of the cliff like we did. That is so cool!

Nothing like watching that perfect flight. I made a Keil Kraft Sky Jet, with a little rocket motor on it. At Old Warden it circled up so high it wet OOS, but circled back down again to land at my feet, amazing.

Great, graceful flights. I used to fly AMA hand launched gliders years ago. My best was just over 60 seconds. I'm too old to throw now days, but the catapult launch has renewed my interests. I have made some from styrofoam egg carton lid, flying wings. They are very easy to make and a penny inserted sideways into the center divider for balance. Just move the penny for and aft to trim flight. A toothpick is glued to the front for catapult launches. They make excellent starter gliders for kids, too! Cheap and easy.

Gosh! that was good, kinda remind me of when I was around 11 or 12, I was the only kid with balsa plane (which maybe the only one in town), it's so cool to fly it...

Did I overlook the sharing of plans somewhere? I would love to try my hand at this glider. Thank you so much for this video.

thanks for posting. some thoughts. it is not clear whether two-surface cambered profiles are being used in making the main wings of the gliders. if not, thicker stock can be used, and main wing leading and trailing edges can be suitably shaped. doing this will actually reduce drag, by 'improving' laminar flow. a little lift might be generated, as well. cheers googletranslate

making the tail of an airframe as light as practical is a rule to live by. at :16, the area (and weight) of the v-tail stab appears to be greater than needed. at times during the video, certain model's appeared to have a 'wonky' distribution of mass. consider whether the mass at the tail of any model can be Reduced. you may know that when the tail is made lighter by one gram, the nose will Need to be THREE grams lighter. and, auw is reduced by four. cheers
