A Tornado at the AMA Headquarters! (Big balsa glider!)

Ғылым және технология

We saw an F3 tornado at the AMA in Muncie, IN! It was huge and crazy. It was circling in the air and then it touched down on site #3.
Yeah, you know we are talking about our 36 inch catapult glider (aka, the "F3.") Not a "real" tornado... but something more awesomer! (Yes I said "awesomer" and it is in my vernacular!)
Video correction: 36 inch wingspan is ~90 centimeters (not 60 centimeters like the video stated) Doh! I can do maths...
The RC Saylors and a number of their friends decided to meet up at the AMA headquarters and spend some time flying RC airplanes. Of course, we (Nighthawk Gliders) must bring some of our crazy catapult gliders and have a go with them!
Thanks to the RC Saylors for spending time with us and a special thanks to "RP Gough aka. Captain Mavic" who helped us film some of our shenanigans!

Brad and Bruce are brothers-- just having some fun building, sharing, and flying various things-- including HUGE Balsa Gliders that seem impossible... ok, maybe not "impossible," but slightly believable? Ok, maybe not "slightly believable," but incredible? Yes, we'll accept "incredible!" and go with that! ;-)

Some might call it luck... but the runway was quite big... so we call it skill! 😉

Without a doubt! It transitions well and we LOVE this thing! It’s fun and borderline dangerous! Should we try something larger? 😜

thanks for posting. good work. here are some things to consider. this should be considered to be a 'lets see if someone can be injured' iteration of a BUNGEE LAUNCH. jeez. there is too much 'draw' to consider it to be a catapult launch. certain features may increase a tendency to stall. it appears that the length of the fuselage forward of the main wing should be reduced by about one inch. the wonky inboard main wing trailing edge May also be a factor. on a free-flight glider, EVERY little thing matters. you may know, a conventional fuselage Should have an inherent Moment Arm of 3:1, with the reference point/fulcrum being located, Appropriately; ie., at the model's (ideal) Center of Mass (c-m), which IS at 25 percent of fuselage length. were it me, i would use a bit more dihedral, at the horiz-stab. there is no indication that a lift-making profile was used in the construction of the main wing. compare the clark-y profile (the profile of model wing Should ALWAYS be thickest at 30 percent of chord.) it is not clear whether Spruce has been used, for the tail boom. if not, it Should have been. with Correct tapering, of course (to keep the dom good). cheers googletranslate
