Hit a raccoon with a '76 Chevy Van. The little feller got wound up in the driveshaft at the carrier bearing mount. Lotsa clunking and thumping. Brought it to my buddy's shop, put the van on the lift, and it looked like something out of a horror film! Poor little guy, and poor me for having to cut most of him out from the under body! Some things you can't unsee!

Couple of other observations: The little hand above the muffler is an indicator that its very hot.. Proof a Dodge Charger can at least outrun a possum. Official winner of the longest playing possum contest A possum can keep up with a Hemi Charger ..Snoopes: That's partially true..but only partly in parts only Now that the possum is part of the car.., does that make it a Pomi Hessum? The possum only gave up because he got exhausted... That was one tough possum to bend a sub chassis like that.

Having come close to clocking one, yes that is a good thing. though that was the least worry of that night, further on came across a hippo, and definitely did not want to be involved with that. Emergency stop, and a very rapid reverse, because a hippo is quite capable of biting thorugh sheet metal of a car, or even biting through the radiator as well. Hitting not good either, 2 tons plus of by now very unhappy critter sitting on your lap, and they are, despite the massive bulk, both very fast and very agile. Elephants give them a wide berth, along with rhinos, and crocodiles, and all of those are very capable of defending themselves.

As has been said a few times, in Australia, Kangaroos are the major road hazard at night (when you're not dodging wombats, rabbits, foxes, camels, et al). Clouted one at 140kph one night. Had a 'roo bar on the front thankfully. Bent the 'roo bar, bonnet (hood), mudguard (fender), broken headlight, popped the driving lights out of their housings, but they were still illuminated, but hanging on the wires. Hit a hare once too. He was about 3' tall! Broken bumper.

Not many raccoons, possums or armadillos in the UK, but I did cross paths with one very unlucky pheasant once. Driving along a tree-lined country lane, this errant pheasant decided that it would be a really splendiferous idea to fly across the lane at approximately 1ft above road level, and timed his launch for the precise moment when my 2008 Skoda Octavia's trajectory intercepted with his. The ensuing 'THOMP' was a relatively minor affair for the car, what with pheasants being somewhat diminutive of stature. This impact alone would have been more than sufficient to see his continued existence in this universe brought to a premature end, but oh no, this pheasant wanted to go out in style. After experiencing approximately 400,000 ft/lbs of energy delivered in a fraction of a second, he promptly arced away and slightly upwards toward the opposite side of the road, and before his mortal remains could be reintroduced to the nurturing embrace of terra firma, he was hit again by another car travelling in the opposite direction. A literal double-whammy. I mourned his passing, but celebrated his flair for the dramatic 😄.

It was the worst one I ever had. One of my customers hit something on the freeway at night. The next day, they came into the shop to have their car checked out, and the parts we found were human. Apparently, a semi truck hit somebody on the freeway and broke the body in half. My customer ran over what was left of the head & shoulders. It was kind of gruesome having the crime lab there, pulling the parts out from the undercarriage.

"Have I ever ran into a crispy critter?" Yeah I did, poor little guy. I was driving my 2011 Cruze and I (through a fault of my own) busted my old front bumper when I almost ran into a ditch. Didn't see it as it was on a hill. Replaced it with a pre-painted bumper from eBay and the next morning as I was heading to work, a racoon was in the middle of my lane and around a sharp curve. The little guy caught me off-guard, lol. Couldn't swerve to avoid it because of an oncoming vehicle and the little guy slammed into the new bumper, cracking the lower middle portion of it and breaking the skid plate in pieces. Needless to say, I couldn't care about the bumper and plates since they're replaceable, but the little guy I thought about for a while after.

I can attest to the lack of heartiness these LX and LC platforms have (Charger and Challenger) in their front suspension. 105k miles and I have to gut the wheel wells and replace everything. Struts, isolators, mounts, upper and both lowers, end links, inner and outer tie rods, and lower ball joints.

Never had a crispy critter but I did have a cardinal get wedged in my rockers on my Jeep somehow. A friend at work saw it and asked when I picked up a traveler and had no clue what he was talking about and then sent the pic of it.

I had turned 18 in late 1978. On a dark rainy night in November I decided to go down to the bar. This is middle of nowhere northern Wisconsin, America’s dairy land but in reality just a bunch of broke farmers trying to keep food on the table. I had a Charger, but it was broke with a bad starter so I grabbed my step dad’s 73 F one hundred and fifty farm truck. It was beat up. He never had the money or inclination to fix anything. I know the passenger side of box was caved in and the right front had hit a deer so no headlight. Anyway, about a mile down the road I’m tooling along when all of a sudden the truck just stopped and then slid into the ditch. As luck would have it, I had hit one of the neighbor’s angus steer. He raised them on the side, as he had a mechanic shop in town, and was pretty good. Thing is, he never maintained his fences, so his cattle wandered all over. It was known. So I’m standing there looking at a pile of dead steak and burgers on one side, and a heap of Ford that I knew would never drive again on the other, when here comes the step dad in the family wagon coming home from the bar. Thing is the local deputy was following him to make sure he made it home ok. So now we had a situation. The deputy went to get the steer’s owner out of bed while step dad and I hauled the dead dinner off the road with the family wagon. So the owner shows up mad as a hornet and lays into me for hitting his beef, but I showed him the non-existent fence and the fact it was dark, raining, and the damned beef was black. Things calmed down a bit. He asked if was gonna pay for his beef. I asked if he was gonna pay for the truck. An agreement was reached where he took half the beef and we took the other half. We all knew that Ford shouldn’t have been on the road. Thing is, I was looking for work at the time and was going to talk to him about mechanicing in his garage. That wasn’t going to happen after what happened as he was a hothead and never let things go. So we all butchered that beef in the rain in the ditch at 10 o’clock on a Sunday night. He took half, we took half, the wrecker took the Ford. I eventually became an engineer involved mostly with vehicles, but in a roundabout way and recently retired only to take a job as a mechanic for golf course equipment.

I hit a hare at freeway speed. my entire car front to back was covered in little spatters of "insides of hare", as well as part of it getting stuck on my radiator. Washing it took well over an hour and it smelled bad for a month with the smell coming off the radiator.

I think high speed is a contributing factor in the subframe damage. Given enough speed, a small animal can cause a lot of damage.

The bent subframe damage looked as though it might have been older: where the paint had flaked as a result there was old-looking rust beneath, so did that happen and have caused the suspension components to be replaced, and it's a fresh strike which has brought it all back to attention?

I had a ground squirrel crawl up above the drive shaft on my '97 Cougar. There is a cozy little spot where the drive shaft "goes through" the gas tank on these. I had no idea he was there until the next morning when I discovered blood on the floor of the garage after my wife left for work. When she got home my garage was filled with the horrible odor of death. Took it quickly over to my buddy's shop. The shop was immediately filled a quite unpleasant smell. Quickly to the outside hoist. Poor Glen drew the short straw and had the honor of removing the critter. It wasn't crispy just grossly bloody. There is plate where the driveshaft "goes through" the tank and that had to be removed to get the squirrel out of there. The most unpleasant experience ever.

I ran over a possum once, unfortunately the possum was sitting on a rock at the time. Made holes in the fuel tank, after dents in the floor pan, (Honda Civic 1980's can't remember exactly), Due to being in the backwoods, having no petrol (gas) would mean being stranded for days, I grabbed some brush and weeds to plug the holes as best I could then drove like a crazy person to the next town. Arrived just in time, as the fuel ran dry. The local mechanic, removed the tank saying,"Yep it's got a wee dent", it was pretty much crushed. he took out the sender bashed it back in some kind of shape then put the exhaust of his truck into the tank, to remove fumes, before welding the holes up. Possum did not make it.

I hit what looked like a cow early one morning, i had a 1984 Pontiac Parissenne station wagon, the left side of the car went airborne, i was about to tip over, i was riding on the right two wheels only like you see in the movies, i held the steering wheel tightly and all of a sudden i landed back on all four wheels it was the most terrifying experience i ever had, i got off the highway to gain my composure and was going to get out and access the damage but decided to just continue on home. When i got home i pulled up along side my house where there are two floodlights, the only visible damage was that the left front corner of the bumper was slightly bent, remember this was a 1984 model with steel chrome bumpers, it's when i looked underneath that the severity of the impact was noticable, there was blood guts hair from front to back, again a station wagon which is long, i got the hose out and began spraying, the blood was running down the gutter like someone had just been murdered, it was too much so i decided to wait until daylight and fire up the pressure washer, it took a long time until it was somewhat clean, i figured the rest would eventually wash off driving in the rain and snow, when I drove it the alignment was off it was pulling to the left, I took it to a guy in town where all the mechanics go for alignments and miraculously there was no damage to any of the steering components, he did the alighnnent and that was it, I'm glad i was driving a big old car it might have saved my life.

Crispy critters. I have 2 stories. 1st. A deer hit my ford head on, joined me in the front, landed on the passenger seat. Blood and hair everywhere and a person sized hole in the windscreen. 2nd, ran over a badger (like a small bear, in the UK). No damage, badger and my car not a thing wrong. I stopped to check and the badger kept on running.
