    I was having lots of problems like this on my 5.7 Hemi engine. It had bad intermittent misfires especially at idle and terrible gas mileage. I thought it was bad engine wear. I took off the plastic intake and the gaskets at the manifold ports were shrunken down completely. Replaced them all and it runs like new again with great mileage. There is a known problem with Hemis from around then where if the owner runs anything heavier than the recommended 5w-20 oil it will starve the lifters for oil if idled excessively and they will wear down the cam lobes. Pretty textbook case you've got there. They've fixed that issue in the last few years, but you should still run 5w-20 oil like is recommended. The problem is that people think they know more than engineers and run what they THINK it needs. People tend to mistakenly think that thicker oil protects better, which it doesn't. Hemis run forever if you take care of them. I've seen tons of them well over 300k...

    These chargers were backed by the 5 speed Mercedes 5G-Tronic originally built to handle the MB V12. These units could handle well over 600 lb-ft of torque so it was not over-stressed. It did require fluid and filter changes every 40-50K and had a tendency to leak from it's plug harness but that is usually an easy fix. I've owned a few of these that got close to or over 200K with no issues, still smooth. Likely a lot of charger owners drove like madmen and did 0 maintenance.

I get 27 miles to the gallon on the highway, And it still runs like a champ, that in mind it is always been garage kept, it has not been ridden hard. It is well taken care of, always receiving preventive maintenance when it needs it. I honestly think that if you just take care of these cars, they run just fine. Hey Scotty, I'm a big fan, love your videos. However, you need to know, I'm a big mopar fan. I've owned plenty all bought new, 1985 Omni 2.2, 1989 Daytona 2.5 turbo, 1995 Talon turbo tsi, 2002 Caravan 3.3, 2006 Grand Cheerokee Limited 5.7, 2015 Durango 3.6, all were great and well maintained I drove each vehicle to 130k-150k miles. Never any complaints and as a 19 year old kid I beat the Daytona & Talon constantly. I get bored after a few years, is why I change vehicles every 5 years or so. I think people who buy dodge simply do not take care of them. So, please ease up on Dodge. Not the best fit & quality but not the worst & they're affordable and worth the money. Love you anyway Scotty

    mopar lifer here, was looking to switch out to something else as my 2016 Caravan is just a little on the wrong side of super boring and no longer fits my lifestyle needs (looking for a truck, which is why i'm on this video now). I agree actually, a lot. I remember my own Daytona had super high km's on it (sorry, Canadian) and while it had problems, it ranks as my favorite overall car i've ever owned. Had I had the money to maintain it the way it deserved, I might have been able to keep it for years longer than I did. This Caravan i've now owned for 4 years, im the original owner of it (rolled it off the show room floor) and I'm thankful to have had the money to keep it running through all it's problems (Turn signal module, coolant thermostat, rear brakes). Which to date, a super recent Cylinder 6 misfire has been the only engine related problem. I got that sucker fixed immediately and it's back to running totally fine. I've heard nothing but screaming praise for that 3.6L Pentastar that's under the hood, and noticed it's the default engine inside of the Ram 1500's. I think if I had any say in the matter I'd pull for a V8 Hemi model though. Either way, I agree, it's about taking care of it and it'll serve you well for a very long time. Anyways, sorry, wall of text lol cheers

    The 5.7 eagle version (gen 3 2009+) does have a history of lifter failure .. essentially the bearings on the lifter roller fail which causes the cam lobe damage.. proper maintenance will help reduce the potential but it's due to the overall design of the engine which reduces the oil distributed to the cam from engine rotation.. most high end replacement cam kits have lifters with much more robust bearings.. it's really not that hard to replace the cam if you are mechanically inclined.. beyond that the engine is pretty solid

    Problem with Chrysler's is their QA. You could get a car that is all good and will go the distance. Or has numerous little problems off the assembly line and will be a money pit even when you first get it. And then chrysler won't cover you for a warranty. This is true in their "economy cars" their upper trim projects always get more attention. They're just decent but they cheap out on all the expensive parts a car needs to be solid and reliable.

    @@emsicz check suspension, especially tie rod ends, links, ball joints and ESPECIALLY check the bushings. Bushings are cheap to buy and easy to replace yourself. Probably will have to replace radiator fans and oil pressure sensors (possibly other sensors too) Other than that just do regular oil changes at 5k intervals (although I do 3k) if you got the V8. Transmission fluid flush could be an option. Would probably be best if it has the Mercedes transmission in it. Other than that check for vacuum leaks and cracked hoses and leaks (oil and transmission), could be worth it to replace some gaskets. Spark plugs will need to be replaced soon too at that mileage. This HEMI is HOT and burns oil. It’s a tremendous engine but everything around it needs to be functioning well in order for it to not mess up so that you don’t end up getting worn lifters and misfires (all mostly due to lack of clean oil). Regular oil changes is the best measure to take to prevent it, but also checking for regular vacuum leaks and making sure that the hoses aren’t cracked or leaking. In other words, it’s made to last but only if you service this car correctly. I’ve seen HEMIs with 350k miles on it, and HEMIs that dropped valve covers at 50k. Differential fluid may also be something worth replacing. All in all I love these cars, but yes, the interiors are terrible.

  • @emsicz

    @emsicz

    @@steveg9302 I'm replacing oil every 3k miles. Sparkplugs replaced already. I literally dropped it for transmission and diff fluid change today, as I was made aware it's something I should've done already. The car is running hot, I can testify to that. When I put my hand out of the window, I can feel the heat coming from underneath the car. I'll see if the garage comes up with any other issues they may find. I found a good US-cars only service with good reputation, hopefully I'll be good. I watched some videos yesterday on valve lifters going bad in these engines, something that can't really be influenced. I wonder if 2013 Charger is affected by this flaw.

    I have a 2015 Charger with the Police Pursuit Package that I bought in 2019 (5.7L AWD, 75,000 miles on it). A few months later the sleeve partially slipped off one of the lifters, locking the cam shaft in place so the mechanic couldn’t pull it out. The entire engine had to be replaced. My 2008 Durango with the police package (4.7L 4WD, 145,000 miles) runs great. Considering that both were likely running 24 hours a day while they were in service, I’d much rather have the 4.7L engine for use as my daily driver.
