Exclusive: Inside British Army's mission in Iraq helping to defeat IS

The 1st Battalion, The Royal Yorkshire Regiment - to use their new and proper title - are a proud bunch of soldiers.
Their cap badge is associated with more than 330 years of history, the latest chapter of which is being written by personnel from Burma Company, who are currently deployed on operations in northern Iraq.
Some might be surprised to learn that the British Army is active on the ground in Iraq 20 years on from the start of Operation Telic.
But the situation today is different. This operation is called Shader, and UK troops - alongside dozens of other nations - are in the region at the strict invitation of the Kurdish-Iraqi government.
But why is the British Army there, and what exactly is it doing?
Forces News was granted exclusive access to embed with the soldiers of 1 Royal Yorks as they conducted operations in the region around Erbil, the capital of the region known as Kurdistan.

    Amnesia is a deficit in memory caused by brain damage or disease,[1] but it can also be caused temporarily by the use of various sedatives and hypnotic drugs. The memory can be either wholly or partially lost due to the extent of damage that was caused.[2] There are two main types of amnesia: retrograde amnesia and anterograde amnesia. Retrograde amnesia is the inability to retrieve information that was acquired before a particular date, usually the date of an accident or operation.[3] In some cases the memory loss can extend back decades, while in others the person may lose only a few months of memory. Anterograde amnesia is the inability to transfer new information from the short-term store into the long-term store. People with anterograde amnesia cannot remember things for long periods of time. These two types are not mutually exclusive; both can occur simultaneously.[4]

    Well the Kurdish people are incredible people they for the first time in history have safe land to live in the northern 1/3 of Iraq and will now be very successful and prosperous I tell you in 20 years Northern Iraq will look like just any area in a western country, any area in the USA, they are hard working, freedom loving,, very Western people just stuck by the hand of fate in the middle of Iraq of all places. They will do things you have no idea in 20 years alone it will look like a totally western culture in the middle of Iraq just like how Israel developed or Dubai or Emirates they are totally western culture people just stuck in the middle east. They need a little bit of help from us to make sure they are safe from ISIS terrorists but soon enough as they develop Northern Iraq they will be able to do it on their own pretty easily just like Israel. They just need 20 years or so to develop and advance but this is a mission that is pretty simple and will lead to amazing results. This is not Afghanistan where the people failed to develop and build an army to defend their own land that is 100000% not the case with the Kurds they for sure will be able to develop just like Israel or other western middles east societies just give them a little bit of time. I actually think all of Iraq will develop really really nicely in the next 20 years but the Kurds all the way fully to western society. It will be amazing to see another part of the world advance in to high quality of life.

    How else is UK supposed to prove they are a "global force" lol? By having troops in 5 different nations spread across the world. Even if these troops are company sized units, it at least gives UK bragging rights of being a "global power", right? Same with the nonsense I keep hearing about how Royal Navy is the "only true blue water navy in the world other than USA". UK is over. It should just give up its seat in the UNSC P5.

    You have no idea man, Northern Iraq is the home of the Kurdish people, they are very western and advanced people, I tell you in 20 years from now Northern Iraq will look like Dubai or Emirates or Israel and will be very advanced culture and part of the world they just need a little bit security right now while they are developing but soon enough will be able to defend themselves. This is a noble mission and they will return the favor for generations to come as they become a very developed part of the middle east. It was just bad luck they ended up in such a nasty hostile area they were butchered by Saddam Hussain even 5000 were murdered by Saddam using Chemical weapons in the Halabja massacre. The least we can do is give them a little bit of safety from the crazies in ISIS but soon enough they will be able to take care of themselves.

    Blair as leader of the Government and Jackson as CGS should be tried for war crimes. According to the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) in Geneva, the invasion of Iraq was neither in self-defense against armed attack nor sanctioned by UN Security Council resolution authorizing the use of force by member states and thus constituted the crime of war of aggression. The fact Jackson and his immediate chain of command did not disobey or even challenge the illegal order to invade IRQ speaks volumes. Not one single officer stood up and said this is wrong and its an illegal order, not one. Think about how bad the leadership culture must be - wooden headed, unintelligent, uninspiring leadership. Still lions lead by donkeys. Get the soldiers out of IRQ and prosecute the politicians and military leaders involved for war crimes. Only then will this mess be made right.

  • @suburbia2050

    @suburbia2050

    God shut up Putin troll, the International Commission of Jurists has no statute, it is meaningless, but sure why not tell Putin to adhere Russian law to their commission! Also the "war of aggression" component of the UN charter is not legally binding either, its merely a definition to define a military dispute between two nation states, so how can it be "illegal" muppet. Half of the World, especially nation states of Africa, the Middle East and South America during the UN charter decades would all be War Criminals if that were case. I guess you are used to living under a dictatorship, but let me tell you no Iraqi on the ground wanted to live under Saddam Hussein who really was a war criminal, for decades, and no one did anything about it, what do the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) in Geneva think about that? I guess you didnt notice all the Iraqis out on the streets celebrating his downfall and who themselves put him to trial.

It’s a problem the US and UK created - running endless COIN ops won’t solve a single problem. There is no winning strategy, don’t believe me? Ask your nearest dim witted Sandhurst graduate what the exit strategy is and what it’s timeline will be, also ask how it’s approach will be measured and what success for IRQ looks like when you leave. Then go and ask your RSM/CSM the same question. If the answer includes elimination of Daesh/ISIS/ISIL - then you are being mislead by someone that doesn’t know what they are talking about. COIN ops don’t eliminate terrorists they just end up producing a larger recruiting base.
