The Viper Room is a nightclub and live music venue located on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California, United States. It was established as The Viper Room in 1993 and was partly owned by actor Johnny Depp. The other part owner was Sal Jenco who starred in 21 Jump Street with Depp. The club became known for being a hangout of the young Hollywood elite, and was the site where actor River Phoenix had a fatal drug overdose on the night before Halloween in 1993. In early 1995, Australian singer and actor Jason Donovan suffered a drug-induced seizure at the club, but survived, as well as singer Courtney Love, who was given CPR by Depp after an overdose. In November 1997, Australian rock star Michael Hutchence played his last public performance in the Viper Room, a week before his suicide.
The Viper Room has undergone several changes in ownership, and continues to host music of multiple genres, including metal, punk rock, and alternative rock.
While predominantly known as a music venue, the Viper Room also hosts a lower level below the stage and audience area, which is home to a large whiskey bar.
The location was originally a grocery store, from 1921 into the 1940s. In the 1940s it was converted into a nightclub called the "Cotton Club", entirely unrelated to the Harlem original. This was soon replaced by "The Greenwich Village Inn", the "Rue Angel" and finally "The Last Call" during the 1940s. From 1951 to 1969, the location was a bar called "The Melody Lounge". In 1969, it became "Filthy McNasty's". and in the 1980s, a jazz club called "The Central". This nightclub was close to shutting down before Chuck E. Weiss, who had performed there for years, suggested to Depp that he should revitalize the spot and rename it "The Viper Room". Tom Waits also had a hand in redeveloping the spot.
Despite the death of River Phoenix the year the venue opened, the club became and remained a hangout for Hollywood's most popular young actors and musicians. Adam Duritz, the lead singer of Counting Crows, worked as a Viper Room bartender in late 1994 and early 1995 to escape his newfound fame.

Went to the Viper Room with my sister who has since passed away from cancer. I recently learned that my cancer has spread to my lungs and brain. So glad I have these memories--don't put off anything in life and go, go, go. Fill your life with interesting people, travels and experiences--that's what I did and have no regrets.

Thanks to Tommy for the tour and the all the information he shared. There just aren't many places like this anymore. It's overwhelming to think of the performers who have been where you just filmed. Appreciate you always getting that unique perspective. Take care.

Was there early once to help a buddy's band set up. Saw the bar tender and said "you served River the drink that killed him!" Looked at me and said. "Wow...never heard that one before." I sat at a table that has a "Reserved" folding card on it, (ended up on my desk at work) a mom and girl, obvioud tourists, joined me while the guys set up. Mom looked at me and asked me who I was. I said no one. They insisted I was "in something." I said "Well....nothing you have seen." Went to the bar to get another drink, saw my buddy putting flyers on each table and talking to mom. Got back to the table and they had moved. Asked my buddy what he said. "They thought you were someone and I said you were nobody." The place is haunted. Steve McQueen and James Garner still sit there and talk about racing...but you can't see them.

@@vicvega3614 STILL REMAINS ...This song talks about love of a quite simple and beautiful way that make us really think about How could be good to feel falling in love by Someone , is a very underreted song and i don't know why because it's beautiful , the verses are so simple and at same time so profound...I have an issue with dragonflies and this song talks about dragonflies in one of its last verses " DRAGONFLIES ARE GLIDING OVER " ....And this part of the refram : " IF YOU SHOULD DIE BEFORE ME ASK IF YOU COULD BRING A FRIEND , PICK A FLOWER HOLD YOUR BREATH AND DRIFT AWAY " WOw man !!! This is truely poetry the rest is bullshit , lot of music of nowadays are bullshit when We compare to many of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS songs ...I really think that may ALEX PROYAS should be choose STILL REMAINS to be in THE CROW soundtrack , i mean , BIG EMPTY is also a great song but listening to both, i think that STILL REMAINS has more to do to the movie's plot than BIG EMPTY , you know , all that soulmate love thing that THE CROW movie talks about too ... 🖖🤘✌️💋💞...Xoxo...🙏🐉

I’ve had a couple good Viper Room experiences. The best was when our producer friend Jim Huff (R.I.P.) made sure we were guest-listed for a Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown show. Tommy (or a promoter named Tom?) took great care of us…and Steven Tyler showed up! He was standing a couple feet away from me, doing Tyler moves to the music. I caught his eye and we exchanged a smile. I had goosebumps. TMZ filmed Tyler leaving and it was funny watching it, knowing I was 10 feet away outside, out of shot. Also, the downstairs bar was pretty cool, too.

I am a big River Phoenix fan and a big Johnny Depp fan. The last time I was in California I did not get a chance to visit The viper room this time I'm going to. I heard they were going to tear it down and I was like no!! It doesn't ever need to be tore down. The next time that I go to California I'm going to make it a mission to get there. Thank you Scott for yet another awesome video❤ stay safe ✌️
