The Whisky a Go Go (informally nicknamed "the Whisky") is a historic nightclub in West Hollywood, California, United States. It is located at 8901 Sunset Boulevard on the Sunset Strip, corner North Clark Street, opposite North San Vicente Boulevard, northwest corner. The club has been the host for musicians and bands including Taj Mahal, Otis Redding, Hugh Masekela, Alice Cooper (who all recorded live albums there between 1966 and 1969), The Stooges, Parliament-Funkadelic, The Doors, Golden Earring, No Doubt, System of a Down, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Chicago, Germs, Elton John, Oasis, Buffalo Springfield, Steppenwolf, Van Halen, Johnny Rivers, X, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, KISS, Guns N' Roses, Death, AC/DC, Linkin Park, Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Stryper, and Phil Seymour.
The Whisky a Go Go was one of the places that popularized go-go dancing. Elmer Valentine, in a 2006 Vanity Fair article, recalled arranging to have a female DJ play records between Rivers' sets so patrons could continue dancing. But because there was not enough room on the floor for a DJ booth, he had a glass-walled booth mounted high above the floor. A contest was held for the female DJ job but when the young winner called Valentine on the night of the opening and tearfully said her mother forbade her from doing it, Valentine recruited the club's cigarette girl, Patty Brockhurst. Valentine quickly hired two more female dancers, one of whom, Joanna Labean, designed the official go-go-girl costume of fringed dress and white boots.
Rivers rode the Whisky-born go-go craze to national fame with records recorded partly Live at the Whisky. In addition, The Miracles recorded the song "Going to a Go-Go" in 1966 (which was covered in 1982 by The Rolling Stones), and Whisky a Go Go franchises sprang up all over the country. Arguably, the rock and roll scene in Los Angeles was born when the Whisky started operation; because of its status as a historic music landmark, the venue was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
The Whisky played an important role in many musical careers, especially for bands based in Southern California. The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Smokestack Lightnin', and Love were regulars, and The Doors were the house band for a while - until the debut of the "Oedipal section" of "The End" got them fired. Van Morrison's band Them had a two-week residency in June 1966, with The Doors as the opening act. On the last night they all jammed together on "Gloria". Frank Zappa's The Mothers of Invention got their record contract based on a performance at the Whisky. The Turtles performed there when their newest (and biggest-selling) single "Happy Together" was becoming a hit, only to lose their new bassist, Chip Douglas (who had arranged the song), to The Monkees; guitarist Michael Nesmith invited him to become their producer (he returned to the Turtles a year later, to produce them). Neil Diamond also played at the Whisky on occasion. Metallica bassist Cliff Burton was recruited by the band after they watched him play a show there with his band Trauma. At one point singer and actress E.G. Daily had a residency at the Whisky. On February 15, 1977, the Ramones played for the first time on this stage.
Arthur Lee of Love immortalized the Whisky in the song "Maybe the People Would Be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale". "Here they always play my songs," he would sing on the side two opener of Forever Changes. The Whisky was located on the strip between the streets Clark and Hilldale. British rockers Status Quo also referenced the venue in their 1978 song "Long Legged Linda" with the lines, "Well, if you're ever in Los Angeles and you've got time to spare / Take a stroll up Sunset Boulevard, you'll find the Whisky there." Loggins and Messina sang about the club in their tune "Whiskey", found on their 1972 album Loggins and Messina.
In 1966, the Whisky was one of the centers of what fans call the Sunset Strip police riots. In the mid-1970s, the Whisky hosted stage presentations, including the long-running show The Cycle Sluts. During the early 1990s, the Whisky hosted a number of Seattle-based musicians who would be a part of the grunge movement, including Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Melvins, Fitz of Depression and 7 Year Bitch.Tracks recorded from a February 12, 1992 concert of Hole appear on their EP, Ask for It.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Whiskey on a Sunday night this summer. Some great live bands were playing, for no cover! Had a few drinks, sucked up the atmosphere, thought of all the history of the location, bought some merch and then headed over to the Rainbow where Whiskey staff had continued to party. Can't say enough good things about the staff. The door man had his ink done by the same artist who did Danzig and Rollins' ink, who has now unfortunately passed away. Motley Crue's old apartment just up the block, the absolute nostoligia of the entire area.... that whole block on Sunset is amazing.

I can't believe that the Alta Vista is still there. That was where Jim Morrison kept a room for 2 years. I read recently that it's up for lease. It looks like they have tried to keep it looking the way it did back then, repainting it the same minty green.. I hope they don't tear it down. The Doors' old studio is now a restaurant. The office building where Pam had her upscale hippie boutique "Themis" is a Persian rug business. At least it was in 2015. The apartment that Ray and Dorothy lived in with Jim on Venice Beach was torn down and a modern house built on the lot. I grew up in South Pasadena and our family used to go to Venice Beach all the time on weekends. When my daughter and I were there, I was amazed to see what appeared to be the original rings and monkey bars that Jim and Ray used to exercise on. Back then we called it "Muscle Beach" because all the weight lifters used to go there to work out. 😄

I love the stories about the Crue when they would play the Whisky in the earlier days and afterwards would yell "afterparty at our place", and the whole crowd would just follow them up the road to their house to party till dawn.

My parents met when they when they were Freshman at UCLA in 1965, and they were at the various clubs on the Sunset Strip, and other venues around L.A. checking out the music scene. They both loved going the Whiskey, and it was not only a great place to see popular bands, it was a great place to check out bands that had yet to make it. They saw Love at almost every show they played at the Whiskey, as well as seeing The Doors before they had a record deal. Both my parents were there the night in August of 1966 when The Doors got fired after playing “The End”. They would often smoke weed or take acid before hitting the town, which was common back then. One thing that was really cool about the Whiskey is that famous musicians and actors would freely mingle with the public, especially on the dance floor. Of course, the Manson family murder spree pretty much changed Hollywood and L.A. overnight from being free and easy to everyone locking their doors and getting security systems and bodyguards.

You were right, Scott......I loved it! 😍🎸🎶🎹🎙 I got goosebumps when you stepped on the stage. I could just picture Jim M. up there doing his thing. Didn't you feel the urge to do a little Lizard King dance? 😁😎 What an iconic place in music history! I can't wait for the rest of the Sunset Strip videos. Thank you for this treat. 🤗

My older sister saw The Doors play there when they were the house band at The Whiskey. They are still my favorite band of all time. Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison were well educated intellectuals. Their sound was unique. They practically invented psychedelic Rock, but also incoporated blues and classical elements in their music. Robbie Krieger was/is an accomplished flamenco guitarist and regarded as one of the top 100 rock guitarists. The late Ray Manzarek is listed as one of the greatest keyboard artists of all time. John Densmore was/is a wonderful drummer and admitted it was a challenge sometimes playing with Jim because he was often drunk and would go off script and create chaos. Morrison was a brilliant writer and poet with a rich and powerful voice, but also a severe alcoholic. "Self-destruction" was his middle name. The Doors paved the way and no one could ever duplicate their one-of-a-kind sound.then or now. Their music sounds just as good today as it did nearly 60 years ago. And I told Jim exactly that when my daughter and I visited his grave on October 9, 2013. It was a very foggy and rainy day in Paris and no one was standing at his grave except for the (obvious) plain clothes guard leaning against a tree smoking a cigarette. There was only a low barrier gate in front of his grave at the time. Since it had started raining heavily and no other people were there at that time, the guard motioned for us to go over the gate if we wished. We thanked him and I told him that I grew up near West Hollywood and my sister had seen The Doors perform at The Whiskey A Go-Go. He told me one of their guards had witnessed Jim's burial. He said it was very sad, that "the girlfriend" had bought their cheapest casket and there were no prayers or any kind of ceremony. As soon as Jim's casket was lowered into the ground, they all took off. He said the older guard told him it was "disgraceful". The French have great respect for the Dead ( I am American but 70% French). The Parisians didn't like the way Jim's burial was handled. Pam et al pretty much just threw him in the ground and took off. The guard was so nice to us. I was limping from a stone bruise and it was raining heavily. I think he took pity on us. 😉 He let my daughter and I sit on the edge of Jim's grave. We sat there clutching our umbrellas lost in our own thoughts. I couldn't believe that I was sitting on Jim Morrison's grave in Paris in the rain. Sensory overload! 😢. We wore raincoats but still got soaked. We didn't care. We quickly gathered handfuls of chestnuts that had fallen on Jim's grave as mementos. We just stuck them in our raincoat pockets. By the time we left, we were both shivering from the cold. As we left, we gave the guard our profuse thanks and he said, "You know...we see Jim's spirit here all the time." I smiled and said "I don't doubt that." Pere Lachaise is a VERY beautiful, atmospheric and mystical place. When we returned home to the States, I counted the chestnuts before I rinsed and dried them. There were exactly 27. 😱 I put them in a beautiful Waterford Crystal bowl which sits on my coffee table. They look exactly the same as they did 9 years ago.

My wife and I were there a few years ago during the day, when it was closed. Asked the guy setting up the billboard if I could look around and he said, "Sure, help yourself. Make sure you go upstairs and check out the dressing rooms." Pretty much had the place to myself. Did the same thing at the Rainbow, and the bouncer said, "Absolutely." Just gotta ask, people.
