Taylor Hawkins rose to fame as the drummer for Foo Fighters, stepping into a vacancy created once chief Foo Dave Grohl found himself at loggerheads with his chosen drummer. Hawkins wound up being an ideal fit for Foo Fighters, matching Grohl's energy and boundless joy for music. Foo Fighters also allowed Hawkins to pursue his rock star fantasies, giving him a built-in audience for his side project the Coattail Riders, a band where he unapologetically indulged in his love for Queen and Cheap Trick. While Foo Fighters remained his main gig -- he anchored the group through thick and thin, sometimes stepping to the center stage for a song or two -- he kept the Coattail Riders active until his sudden, unexpected death at the age of 50 on March 25, 2022.
Taylor Hawkins was born in Dallas on February 17, 1972 but grew up in the surf and sand of California's Laguna Beach. Influenced from his youth by the Police's Stewart Copeland, Hawkins briefly spent time early in his career honing his skills with the experimental group Sylvia before enlisting in the touring band for Canadian singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette. When Foo Fighters suddenly found themselves without a drummer in 1997, Hawkins jumped at the chance to join the group's ranks behind the drum kit. Though immensely enjoying his position with the band -- and just as Foo Fighters grew to be considerable stars in the alternative rock world of the late '90s and into the 2000s -- Hawkins considered himself somewhat of a frustrated songwriter. So in the style of bandmate Dave Grohl (Nirvana drummer-turned-Foo Fighters frontman and guitarist), Hawkins began, somewhat accidentally, a side project in the summer of 2004 that would eventually become Taylor Hawkins & the Coattail Riders.
Differing from Grohl, however, Hawkins served as both his band's vocalist and its drummer. The Coattail Riders formed when a restless Hawkins started randomly writing songs with drummer friend (and aspiring producer) Drew Hester during a break in Foo's schedule. Hester's housemate, Gannin, added some guitar parts, and what started out as just the guys having a good time suddenly materialized into an album. Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction, Alanis Morissette) was recruited for bass duties, adding his parts in only one day. Recorded in three weeks, the songs were set aside to concentrate on In Your Honor, Foo Fighters' pending release, but Hawkins returned to them in mid-2005. The resulting self-titled album was tinged with classic rock influences including the Police, early prog rock, Devo, and Queen, and Coattail Riders released an eponymous album in March 2006 on Thrive. Red Light Fever, the second album from Hawkins & the Coattail Riders, followed in 2010.
Hawkins launched a second band, the metallic combo the Birds of Satan, in 2014, who released a self-titled album that year. He returned to the Coattail Riders in 2019, releasing Get the Money that November. In March 2022, Hawkins and the Foo Fighters traveled to South America to play a handful of concerts, headlining the Lollapalooza Festival in Argentina on March 20.
On March 25, 2022, Hawkins was in Bogotá, Colombia, where he was scheduled to perform with the Foo Fighters later that evening. After Hawkins complained of chest pains, emergency services were called up to his room at the Four Seasons Casa Medina hotel. Health personnel arrived and found Hawkins unresponsive; they performed CPR, but he was declared dead at the scene, at the age of 50. His cause of death was not immediately revealed.
The following day, Colombian authorities announced that a preliminary urine toxicology test indicated that Hawkins had 10 substances in his system at the time of his death, including opioids, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and THC. Colombia's National Institute of Forensic Medicine stated that they would "continue the medical studies to achieve total clarification of the events that led to the death of Taylor Hawkins", and the attorney general's office would continue to investigate his cause of death in a "timely manner"
The Foo Fighters announced the death of Hawkins in a Twitter statement on March 25, writing that "His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever." On March 29, the band cancelled all their upcoming shows. On the night of his death, Hawkins was scheduled to perform with the Foo Fighters at the Estéreo Picnic Festival in Bogotá as part of their ongoing South American tour. The festival stage was turned into a candlelight vigil for Hawkins.

Only two celebrity deaths have made me cry. Robin Williams and Taylor Hawkins. Thank you for this video. Addiction is so cruel. Edit to add: I got to meet them all after the acoustic gig in London. I just remember Taylor coming out of the door saying, "Get it all out, I'll sign it all!". All the band spent ages doing this. A moment I'll never forget.

@kerrystewart3857 his autopsy, showed the levels of drugs in his system. That's proof. His heart is the reason he died, but his addiction has been well documented over the years. I'm not saying that's what killed him, merely commenting.

My heart breaks still not only for the band and fans but mostly for his wife and children. When Dave pulled his son up to the stage and had him play the drums, I was in awe and then tears just kept falling. His dad would have been so proud of him. As a matter of fact he was looking down on him with a huge smile. Taylor will always be with him and everyone that he knew or touched in some way with every story that is shared and every song that is sung. Just remember this, every moment becomes a beautiful memory ❤

I saw the Foos on the Concrete & Gold Tour in Dallas and it was such a great concert. I tear up now though when I think of it, because it was the last concert me & my husband saw before he passed away in late 2020. Then when Taylor Hawkins passed it just broke my heart all over again.

I would like to say, it bothers me how people assume Taylor died of a drug overdose. The reason why, is, we dont have an official cause of death from any medical doctor and by saying "10 substances and enlarged heart", there is more to it than that which not everyone knows. A year BEFORE he died, he was interviewed by Rolling Stone and his enlarged heart was talked about in the interview. Taylor said that he had seen a doctor and it was explained an enlarged heart is very often found in people who do hard core mountain biking like he does. Secondly, I'm only 46 and am disabled - mentally and physically. I take 3 medications to treat PTSD ALONE. I also take cholesterol meds, pain meds - opioid and non opioid, and a few others. I take MUCH more than "10 substances" and I am NOT an addict. I've never tried anything stronger than hash oil and have only ever taken prescription drugs my doctor has prescribed and AS prescribed exactly as prescribed. Yet, if someone ran a "urine analysis" on me and published, everyone would assume I'm trying to beat Keith Richard or Nikki Sixx's record! All I'm getting at, is, nobody other than whom the doctors released the final results to has all the facts and we should all take what we have heard with a grain of salt. Funny too how toxicology tests after death take at least 2 months to process in Canada and the US but in Columbia you can know over night? Yeah, I question the "facts" all the time. I'd rather remember him for the one certain thing, he was one hell of a musician, great smile, made everyone else smile, he sure could sing! And his wings were ready long before any of us were.

Hit the nail on the head. Taylor suffered from severe anxiety and as such took strong prescription medication to even be able to perform in front of an audience. Taylor seems like he just had his prescription drugs and THC separately. It’s wrong and disrespectful to assume he’s an addict because of this.

There’s always more to any story than they tell us, you did well explaining how complex the issue is and how he succumbed to this in a place where rules can be bent. I remember it like yesterday sometimes but I also know enough time has passed to create closure and healing without receiving answers. There was symbolism in when and how it all occurred but we only look so far into things sometimes. It definitely changed some perceptions. Taylor seemed more human yet the love of money drives the music industry. If you think they care about you you’re kidding yourself you’re just a commodity to them no matter who you are. It can make one physically ill to think how far they’ve been placed on a pedestal. Life goes on give your attention to what gives back… it’s your story.

I said um it sure is, he was all alone just standing by a gate, we went up and shook his hand and said we didnt wanna bother him but he was standing all alone, he started laughing and was the most down to earth guy, my buddy went to the show the next night at PPG paint arena, i couldnt go, but awesome experience, that was July 2018 i think

This was such an awesome video! It was so cool to see Taylor’s old house, along with the Foo Fighters Headquarters. In 1997 I saw the Foo Fighters in concert in NJ, opening for the Stones. I wasn’t really familiar with Taylor Hawkins yet, so when I saw him play I remember thinking “damn, look at that boy just beat the crap out of those drums!” He was incredible and I could tell he was having the best time playing. I feel like when it comes to famous people, when they die - especially so young and so suddenly - certain ones just seem to have an effect on people on a more personal level somehow, even having never met them in person. For me, Taylor Hawkins was definitely one of those people. Thank you for such a great video 🤍

I went to see the foo fighters in Lexington KY in 2019 just to pull up and see the sign say "Tonight's Foo Fighters Concert Canceled"!!! I looked at my wife after renting the hotel and driving hours from east Tennessee and said.....this is Dave Grohl! The Foo!!! The band that the singer fell off stage broke his leg and finished the show!!!! Dave doesn't cancel!! Well sad but true! We were so disappointed we stayed the night and just hung out. I called the venue and spoke to someone that said one of the members during sound check had a family emergency and had to leave! Found out months later it was Dave's mom. "No idea what happened though" but happy to say almost a year later they returned,we made the trip,AGAIN.... MIND BLOWN!!! the guy's played 3 hours straight!!! I'm so happy I got to see them before Taylor passed away!! Rip Taylor Hawkins and Virginia Grohl. Thanks Scott! Never disappointed my friend. Fantastic work

Taylor will always be missed. What a fitting tribute to visit one of his 1st famous homes & studio, especially with 909 Adventurers along (Hi Britt & Jeff). Friends getting together & honoring his memory where he spent so much time. Also, it would be freaking amazing to have Dave Grohl BBQ! I also remember Sass Jordan & she just recently released a 1994 live version of High Road Easy in tribute to Taylor. Scott, Britt, & Jeff, I appreciate all of you so much. Take care .
