EXCLUSIVE: Barack Obama talks Gaza, Israel and the 2024 Election

It’s Election Day, with big implications for abortion, democracy, and much more in Ohio, Virginia, Kentucky, and Mississippi. It's also one year out from the 2024 presidential election, and a new set of battleground polls in the New York Times shows Donald Trump ahead of Joe Biden just about everywhere. Meanwhile, Trump takes the stand in his civil fraud case while his advisors draw up plans to use the military against protesters if he wins the election. Then, Barack Obama sits down with Jon, Tommy, Dan and Alyssa Mastromonaco for an expansive conversation on democracy, violence in the middle east, and his memories of winning the presidency fifteen years ago.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us-one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America-a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

Obamas entire presidency was literally 8 years of America at war. over half a million innocent civilians killed. Its because of him that boys and men are going into your little girls bathrooms, locker rooms and undressing in front of them. He bailed out the banks that screwed over the people. He helped Marxist group BLM with their funding and then subsequent rioting and looting that destroyed 2 cities and left people dead and then went on to steal 90 million dollars and buy mansions. On the day that children at Uvalde were killed he instead posted a pictured of criminal crackhead george floyd. And btw it was a mentally ill confused trans person that he propped up killed those children. And he said nothing of importance in this interview. He gets and accepts interviews with people that ask him nothing to challenge him. but you are not intelligent enough to see through his bs

Vowed that they would make sure that he got nothing passed. Not only to stagnate the country but to make sure he would only be a one term president. Most of them were pissed he became president. I love you Obama! But, the first thing I learned during 2016, and previously in 2000, is that we need to get rid of the Electoral College. The majority of people voted for Gore, and Hillary, but were eluded by this last vestige of the Confederacy. It needs to go away. If states with 150,000 people can determine how the majority (of which I grew up with when groups of us kids would raise our hands for the majority) of our country who hold a majority rule, and try to turn an 80% viewpoint it causes division. The majority of this country doesn't want Roe v Wade overturned, or LGBTQ rights overturned, or the right to contraception overturned. The Presidential election, should, like local elections be determined by popular vote. Period.

Exactly! Why do we even still have states that once were evenly populated like others, but they are not now (far ago, to be honest), and they don't deserve to have the same "political weight" as the densely populated ones...?! Why the heck both Dakotas have 2 senators each, similar to California, or Texas, or Florida...?! It's ridiculous! And unfair! And it distorts (political) reality!

  • @mightyone3737

The electoral college was put in place specifically to sabotage democracy and protect slavery. The one time it made sense to actually use it as such, in 2016, the option was ignored in favor of letting trump win. I'm not under any illusions that getting rid of it would actually make a real difference (Clinton in 2016 was a sacrificial candidate that the deep state, a strongly conservative entity that very much exists, actively tanked, culminating in the BS about Benghazi, including an investigation being launched WITHOUT EVIDENCE, days before the election), but when the explicit purpose of the electoral college was to protect stuff like slavery it's long past time for it to go.

Yes. But it's not going to happen. Not now. And not likely in my lifetime. So we have to live with it and _still_ work for progress. Yes, it will be harder. And it will be even _harder_ with the Christian Taliban in firm control of our Supreme Court. Our many, _many_ past mistakes make it far harder than it should be. But that's just reality. And just because it's hard, we can't give up. We can't wait until a fantasy future somehow arrives... by magic? No matter how hard it gets, we just have to keep working hard to move forward. And right now, that means accepting that the Electoral College is a thing. It's a thing in reality, right now - not forever, hopefully, but right now.

We need a think tank to make and track multi generational plans - to counter the Heritage Foundation et. al. Securing in the constitution voting rights in which One citizen = One vote. This would involve dissolution of the Electoral College and other voter subversion relics of the horse and buggy days. The USA needs to catch up to our sister and brother democracies in Australia, Canada and Europe. May be the Obama Foundation can build that think tank.

Swinging between debt-exploding republican congresses to sensible democrat congresses. Now, the Maga bunch have meant there is no working together or crossing the aisle. Where the politicians who are only out for themselves is growing. I can't see an end to this. trump finally disappearing won't make much difference (except making me super happy not to see his stupid face or listen to his stupid whining). What has happened to this country since 2016 is just mind boggling. Those are 8 years I’ll never forget. And I hope the history books reflect this, too. But we know how that might end. I personally feel the closest connection we have to Barack and this state of mind is Pete Buttigieg. This left me so emotional. God help us all.

I used to *feel* the same way exactly; because I was so charmed by his presence, his rhetoric, his measured & presidential affect. That's because i was going on how he made me *feel* vs what was really going on that the media would *never* talk about. In the past few years I put my emotions aside, switched my bullshit meter into the on position & did some homework. Policy and what the media *isn't* telling you is where the truth s usually kept at bay. We were in two wars w/ the Bush admin; Obama took us to *seven* He dropped 26k bombs on innocent civilians until the military literally ran out of bombs. He created a drone program that killed 96k people (and won a peace prize for it) He kicked 51 million people out of their homes while making sure the bankers on wall street never missed a bonus. He claimed to save the lower class communities in Flint Michigan of their poisonous water, but failed to do it entirely. All of this with a calm, reassuring smile to let you know that he's one of the *good* uncorrupt politicians in DC. The truth hurt for sure, but it made me grow up a little bit & put my emotions aside. The media, nor the government are our cozy friend group. The media (people like Maddow, whom I used to adore) with their faux "down to earth" "smart" calm, all knowing, smug reassurances are all bought & paid for.

My husband was dying, so I didn’t even know Obama was President…until, I saw him speak and loved him immediately. Brilliant and handsome. To find out we got trump as backlash, because Obama was “black” was shocking. Obama was a brilliant, very well spoken, and handsome I guess I miss the vitriol. I thought we were way past that. What a damn shame

@ivonr44 appreciate the question, lol it's making me have to think: Good things he did were Affordable Care Act, which was/is far from perfect but was a small step in the right direction. As a doctor who grew up without Healthcare, it's wildly important to get more people covered. He did a lot of pardons for low level crimes/time served and helped with a bit of prison reform. And solidified the Paris Climate Accord. And he brought us out of the great recession, which was brought on by subprime lending and mortgage crisis which overwhelmingly hurt people of color who historically have been restricted from buying property (which accounts for the majority or the wealth gap between white and black families). Increased training for teachers. All small steps in the right direction. He ended the isolation of cuba, which was dumb anyway. We as a country always try to fuck over any country that tries socialism or communism, then point to how bad socialism and communism are lol. After MERS Outbreak(another coronavirus), which was scary AF, not only did he handle it really well (or at least accepted that it was a real thing) he put more funding into the pandemic response team which monitors global trends in viruses, bacteria, protozoa and their genetic drift in case a shift happens as did with both SARS COV1 and COV2, and MERS. Which led him to have more solid strategies when Ebola landed in the US, which would have likely beed devastating if not for the response teams. The same ones that warned trump when he took office that something was incoming, and he responded by defunding them amd essentially gutting the program. Obviously was president when we killed Osama Bin Laden.. but then we also trained Osama Bin Laden also lol so. . For the bad: he very obviously still worked for wall street, he approved MASSIVE cuts to social security in the back of the house: in the 40s there were 41 employees per person receiving social security, and were now on track to have only 2. His hands off approach to civil war in Syria (part of it was Iram Deal) very likely led to another massive refugee crisis, but I don't necessarily know which would have been preferred personally. He didn't keep up with cyber threats of places like Russia, which are so powerful today likely because of funds going elsewhere. He promised to be super transparent, but wasn't, and was easily the mist antagonistic to the media since Nixon (but trump made him look amazing by comparison). He was REALLY shit with Netanyahu and allowed us not only to sit and watch the 50 year + humanitarian crisis that was happening in Gaza and West Bank, but actually funded Israel in their objectively criminal oppression of the Palestinians in these areas (that were Palestinian land since the time of the Romans). He appointed James Comey to head the FBI which has good and bad, but really there were better people for the job, but for some reason democratic presidents have some unspoken rule to always have a republican FBI director. He was VERY weak on banks/banking and let them steamroll him. By his time the GOP had already become essentially just a party of obstructionists and he continued to try and reach across the aisle and work with people who just fucked him over and stabbed Americans in the back repeadly (same as they do now, but they were a lot sneakier then). Was NOT very tough on funding investigations of very obvious gerrymandering and other forms of voters suppression. It is getting looked at and fixed now, but essentially entire districts of black and brown voters get chopped up into 15 parts and each one added to a white rural district to water down areas they know would certainly not vote GOP lol. That's why GOP has the representative numbers they do despite being very firmly in the minority in all but a few states. Lots of other voters suppression shit, same as we see now, it was just a lot sneakier. Now they straight up give the game away: young people 18-24 overwhelmingly vote Democrat, well let's raise the voting age to 25. College educated, and students vote democrat, let's remove all voting places near colleges and universities. Just flagrant very obvious bullshit, they used to be better lol. But you have to wonder how much of him being cordial and trying to be a team player was the result of him being the first black president. He used drones to kill SOOO many people and I would argue a lot of it was war criminal territory. His border policy was near criminal as well, and many would call it a humanitarian problem as well. Obama and Biden had all the cages and facilities built that trump used to do all of HIS shit at the border. I'm not saying there IS a good answer available for the southern border, but separating families, trying children alone with no representation, leaving them in prison camps for months, is a no go. But a wall is a retarded 4th grader answer to the issue. Admittedly Biden has improved the border issue, despite what the news would tell you. Crime is also at record lows, other than firearm violence, and hate crime. And fentanyl isn't coming over the border the way the news would like people to believe either lol. I was active duty army for his whole presidency, and wasn't really worried about him doing anything super dumb, but he did kill a lot of innocent people. Repeal of don't ask don't tell was a double edge sword as I can attest to as my wife and I knew a lot of gay people in the army. It was in some ways a huge win for gay rights, and you could be openly gay in the military. But for the actual gay people in the military it was quite scary, because it didn't end the bigotry and hatred with the repeal of the law. Before that you were straight up NOT allowed to ask somebody about their sexual orientation, and they didn't have to tell anyone. But overnight the joy of the moment got scary as people realized they weren't protected from being asked and a lot of hatred and violence occurred. I'm sure there are a lot of things I am forgetting. If you ask Fox News they'll say the worst things he did was: wore a tan suit once (Reagan did as well but they have selective memory), he wore short sleeves in the oval office once!!! And one time he DARED to ask for Dijon mustard on a hamburger! How dare he ask for "fancy mustard!?" He should eat american yellow like the rest of us!!!

@user-pq2nv7lt8n there were a lot of humanitarian things he either took a hands off approach to, or in some cases helped fund. Lots of drone strikes, innocent deaths. He took a hands off approach to a lot of things, but I think a lot of that had to have been the pressure of being the first black president and not wanting to rock the boat. Don't ask don't tell was a mix bag. A lot of little things: he was really weak on banking and wall street. There's a few more things I'm sure I'll remember as soon as I hit send lom

No where close to the courage to push for positive change for society like Lincoln. Lincoln wasnt bought by wealthy donors either. People get too gooey and dreamy eyed about obama. I voted for him and i have respect but I do not get gooshy about it just because he is intelligent, speaks well and has natural charisma. You can do that and still murder more people with drones than ever before (as one small example).

No, we are not ALL complicit. I have read history and it’s missing the reality that the perspective or the amount or capacity of being able to care for one another is not equivalent among people. We have eternity to evolve but our lives are short. Power is abused and the games power players play are rapacious, brutal and keep the game winners winning and void of sharing. It takes a long time to have a majority of hearts that are full of love, speak the truth and strive for balance for a whole planet.
