In this short excerpt from our video on Gertrude Bell, we take a look at the underlying political situation in the middle East with respect to the war unfolding in Europe in 1916. The Arab rivalries and alliances that allowed for a significant revolt against Ottoman forces. We look at British security guarantees given to Sheik Hussein of the Hashemite Dynasty in Mecca, Ibn Saud in the desert heartlands, and the Balfour declaration that sought to procure Jewish support in return for a permanent homeland. Glad you enjoyed it! I've had a lot of requests to make short videos, which is not really my style, but excerpts are, I hope, a satisfactory compromise
Isn't the "Lawrence of Arabia" Movie from 1962, not 1969? You probably got it mixed up with his - 1926 - book "Seven pillars of wisdom" AKA "Revolt in the Desert". I only mention it because "Dune" came after LoA - 1965 - and was greatly influenced by it, and not the other way round, so the date's - not Dates - are important.
