Excerpts: The Colonial History of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas)

In this short extract from our video on Margaret Thatcher, we look at the pre-20th century history of the Falkland Islands, the development of colonial settlements and some of the issues that led to the territorial disputes that eventually blew up in the 1982 invasion by Argentina.

Interesting and informative, thanks. However, the Union flag is upside-down. The one at the end is OK.

A few comments, Masserano explicitly stated on the declaration that sovereignty of the islands belonged to Spain - the momentary restoration of Port Egmont was under the condition of british evacuating the territory in two months. The plaque there was removed a few years later by the spanish. Buenos Aires sent the frigate Heroína to take position of the islands on 1820, event that was never contested by the UK. There Vernet acted to protect and regulate fishing activities under Argentinian law, confiscating a US fishing ship as a last resort against crews that consistently ignored the new legislation and authorities. Las Malvinas fueron, son y serán Argentinas!

@@heroesandlegends right, it says the restoration "cannot nor ought in any wise to affect the question of the prior right of sovereignty of the Malouine islands" the prior being Spain's and them ruling over the islands well into the 1810s without the UK ever protesting tells me that was prob the case. Wouldn't be the last time the UK "misinterprets" a treaty about the dispute too, looking at the Arana-Southern treaty. Thanks for the civil discussion too
