Thank you for measuring the bevel angle. The really high quality carving knives are flat grind 5-6 degrees on each side. (Helve, Drake, OCC, etc) 9 degrees/side is not bad. Beavercraft knives at the other end of the spectrum are way up at over 20 degrees/side because they use crap steel. A secondary bevel is undesirable for detail wood carving because it effects how the blade pushes into the wood.

I have several woodcarving knIves by Pfeil and Butz and they are flat ground but have a micro bevel at the edge. Same for some Mikihisa Japanese carving knives. The Hutsuls knife seems to be holding up it just seemed like a pretty fine angle. Some that I have reworked to a true Scandi grind sure do bite into wood though.

He means more of a micro bevel I’m sure. Which is recommended by many of the greats in their books. It does very little in the way of changing how it carves, but drastically adds to the toughness of the edge. Requiring less maintenance over time. Don’t be afraid to learn how to sharpen like a professional. They know what they are talking about. A true secondary bevel is what you see on most pocket knives. And when they are kept sharp, they still carve well. Problem is most people “think” they can sharpen, but they can’t.
