My problèm with Opinels is I always destroy them. They just don't stand up to the hard use I put them through. Never had any operational problems and I do like them and they have their place, I'm just too hatd on my knives. Knives are tools and I treat them as such. Opinel aren't the only knives that quit on me either, so I'm not raggin on them by any means. I just need knives with a bit more backbone is all.

Your knives must lead a hard life, so you need knives that can stand up to the wear and tear. What knives hold up for you, and what do you use your knives for?

I found from China.. D2 is just a label sometimes. Not a true identification of the blade steel. Have to test it. The front lanyard hole also is for making a small "thump loop". Helps hold the knife in the hand. It's probably a copy of another designer. That is why there is no name. Hard to link it. China seems to be stealing and reverse engineering other people's designs. Benchmade is having a huge clone issue, as well as Microtech.

Being in Québec, I know a fair amount of french peoples. They swear by their opinel knife. Cheap, convenient, safe. etc. I think the company still make the normal steel (not ss) blades. Recently, I watched the movie Julie&Julia and I remember one scene when Julia mentionned that she agree about another chef who prefer normal steel (ss was somewhat new at that time)...

  • @workbenchknifeandtool

Opinel definitely still makes carbon steel blades in addition to stainless steel. Some do prefer carbon steel blades over stainless, but both steels that Opinel uses are quite good. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Coming up in the sixties, I had a small pen knife that my dad got me at a business that handed them out to customers. Later as I got older, I realized that a pocket knife was a necessity for me so I have carried one since I was seven years old. Anyone that ever says that they don't need a pocket knife for every day carry are the same ones that are always borrowing mine. I always carried a knife at school with no problems. I have seen people freak out whenever someone pulled a pocket knife out to use as a TOOL. People like that are very strange to me. I say, get you a good little pocket knife and then you can stop borrowing mine. Great video, thanks for sharing.

While teaching at a rural high school, I sent several boys to the principal because I caught them using pocket knives on projects, and whatnot. Eventually, the principal called me into his office and asked me to stop. He explained that it was a rural school, and the boys carried pocket knives everywhere, and he had no problem with it. After that, of course, I just ignored it when I saw it.

I used to hate Opinels when i first moved to France and i saw them in everyone's kitchen and they didn't seem especially elegant or well-made...NOW i realize that they are the almost the best combination of simplicity, affordability, and design perfection that you could ask for in a folding pocket knife, and both their carbon steel and inox blades stay razor sharp for an awfully long time and are easy to sharpen

Wow, you do some amazing work. I'm very impressed. You lut together a really interesting video too. I'm searching for a pocket knife for whittling, but I can't quite find what I want. I'm in the UK and legal carry has to be under 3" and non locking - it is what it is. That Flexcut Whittling Jack may be what I'm looking for. I read that Flexcut blades are all 1075 steel hardened to about 60 Rockwell, which is pretty good. I have the Rough Rider Whittler which you show and I can't use it because the small blades scare me with the amount that they flex. They're just too thin and would break eventually. You should check out their Seahorse Whittler, but be aware that they make them in 440A, which doesn't impress me much, but also in a T10 carbon steel which should be better. Like yourself I would love a carbon steel Congress pattern, but an affordable one as I would definitely want to modify the blades. As yet all of the Rough Rider Congress knives are 440A as far as I know, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled and my fingers crossed. All the best from bonnie Scotland.

@ivancho5854 it's sad that you can't look at pocketknives on ebay. Boker sells a Congress, but it is currently Chinese made, and they don't state what steel it is other than stainless. The German Bokers cost more but the steel is good. They are re-introducing a number of their traditional patterns in D2. Check Boker's website. When I get in front of a computer I will get you some links.

Somewhere around five years ago I did a quick run to the store and when I got back all of my tools were gone. I vomited in the kitchen sink the moment I realized that my eyes were telling me the truth. I was heartbroken to have my $50,000ish (give or take a few K) worth of very hard to find antique tools stolen. A lot of people would consider them safe queens, but those tools were made to work and I put 'em to work. They performed beautifully. Here's the ridiculous part - Sometime in the early 1970's we were driving through Death Valley and my mom pulled over so we could stretch our legs. We parked next to a tractor trailer and I ran over to see if I was at least as tall as one of the tractor's wheels standing on the tips of my toes yet and I wasn't even close. One of my big sisters laughed at me and I started to cry. The driver of the truck walked over to me, picked up this perfectly smooth black rock that was flat with rounded edges and almost the exact size of a quarter placed on top of it. He looked at it with amazement and said that it was the finest worry stone he'd ever seen and there is a reason why I stopped to cry over it. He showed me how to rub it between the thumb and forefinger and said sometimes it'll take a few minutes, but that stone will always take my worries away if I let it. I've had stone for coming close to 50 years now. When I realized that I was robbed I was horrified to think that quarter sized piece of worthless black rock was gone forever. I found it on the floor a few minutes later because there isn't a thief on the planet that would lift a finger to steal a worthless rock. Sorry for writing a novel here, but I felt like it was a story worth telling.
