I have had this problem in the past. Nothing to do with an eating disorder just social anxiety. It sucked. I came up with all kinds of excuses. I also had a way of eating by drinking lots of water to slide things down easier and I took very small bites of food. People would comment I ate like a bird. She could’ve said she was so nervous she felt a bit nauseated or something. She def made it really awkward. If it’s due to anxiety or even an eating disorder I feel bad for her.

@@jolouis100 Yeah, one of my friends has that too, and her relationship with food is otherwise completely healthy, she simply can't bring herself to eat in certain settings. She's worked at the same place for 6 years, loves her co-workers, but still can't eat lunch with them or even at her desk while someone else is there. Luckily, she can eat in front of me and our other friends because we all love good food and I'm glad we can enjoy it together and that she considers me a close enough friend to feel comfortable eating around me.

That is a massive insult . Don't give me " maybe she has an eating disorder" bullshit. I miss the days of "suck it up" instead of "understanding" someones disorder. Kurt Kurt These disorders didnt just come out of the blue. They where always there and a problem to people. You just hear more about it now because of the internet. With alot of these mental conditions "Suck it up" isnt the answer to cure it. That usually just makes the issue worse.

Not wanting to eat in front of strangers doesn’t automatically mean she has an eating disorder. I’m uncomfortable around strangers. When I’m uncomfortable or nervous, I completely lose my appetite and can’t feel hungry

pushing boundaries is good....if that's the case, how he did it is bad....what I noticed most is the mother said "i don't know how they do things in RUSSIA." The girl is from the Philippines. If she can't even make sure she knows what country the fiance is from, how serious is she in making she feel comfortable half a world away from everything she knows. We Americans just take for granted other cultures will just pick up on our traditions and customs like they been doing it for years. If it's true anxiety, give her time to just meet the family, sit outside the pool and enjoy the outside. I have a Filipina girlfriend and I would have never put her in this situation, or if my family would have insisted on a meal knowing her anxiety, I would have pulled my mother into another room and told her to back off.

I have met many Filipinos and most, if not all, had an accent. If my eyes were closed and a Filipino was speaking in English I'd instantly be able to state that it's a Filipino. I think I made it clear, but again, as per the original comment "she barely has an accent" had no judgement about whether her first language is English or not. Oh, come on. Maybe she was the older one when they married. I think every ex-spouse in the world has concerns about a new spouse for the children’s sake. I know people who have either stayed married or at least refrained from remarrying until the children from their previous marriage are older......I don’t think that’s a bad thing to do, although in many cases it is not necessary. Parents should prioritize their children’s welfare over other considerations. Sometimes, remarriage is best for the kids, sometimes it isn’t.

I was like this too especially when I was a child. I refused to eat or even drink from 7 am to 5 pm everyday in school. That went on for years. Still like this in college but I started to think that no one gives a fuck about me, they aren't watching me eat, and they're not gonna think I'm a glutton because everybody does it.

Traveling to other countries, I ate lots of foods I didn't like because I knew someone took the time and expense to prepare it for me. No one expects you to "stuff your face", but you should eat something and not turn your nose up at the effort people put in on your behalf. Regardless of your reason for refusing to eat, it's still disrespectful and will be viewed as ungrateful. I'd say, anyone who will not eat when others can see them, definitely needs treatment to resolve the issue.

I think the mom was just surprised and felt unappreciated so she responded that way. In a lot of cultures, it's incredibly inconsiderate to dismiss all food that is offered to you. Even if someone doesn't feel like eating, they should at least take something to eat to show acknowledgment of someone else's cooking. With that being said, the girl obviously has an eating disorder and unhealthy self-esteem issues. Sara Evans no it’s a eating disorder. I had it for 3 years and was diagnosed with severe social anxiety disorder. My eating disorder made it where I wouldn’t eat in front of anyone and if I did I felt like I was constantly judge so I would just drink water or eat a bit of chips so no one would wonder why I was eating. Even just eating that amount made me feel awful about my self and made me want to cry when anyone asked me why I wasn’t eating a lot. So kids even talked about it and made fun of me for it.

Gia nettie NO way! She said she "didn't eat yet" thus implying to the host that she is hungry and would be willing to eat. They whole reason for them going there was to meet the fam and have dinner. She was flat out rude as hell. But to be fair, it really isn't done intentionally. She obviously has some sort of an eating disorder, abnormal relationship with food and zero social skills. His family are not understanding or sensitive to the blatant awkwardness of her. But he also should have given his family a heads up that she's got a weird thing with food/eating in front of people. Buuuut, I would be offended af too.

she's just shy and doesn't like being stared at while she eats...nothing wrong with that. He should have let his family know though ahead of time, cause it makes her look rude to his family when that's not her intention.

Feeling uncomfortable with eating in public is one of the red-flag signs of an eating disorder.

Makes it more uncomfortable to keep nagging her to eat. Some ppl, women especially, are uncomfortable eating in front of ppl. It’s actually more common than you’d think. I imagine it’s magnified in that situation where she’s the new person and everyone will be talking to and looking at her eating.

Yeah they made it worse..she politely declined the food. Stop trying to force her into it! Her man should have given them a heads up on the phobia especially if they went through the trouble of preparing the meal. What if she was feeling very sick or something else? It could be a very personal reason or an eating disorder. Why would you put her in that situation? You really shouldn't have to explain yourself... maybe thank them for the food and sip some water?

Before they put the food away or the couple's about to leave, just ask if they'd like a plate of food to take with them? My family will ask if ur hungry, and still go eat. They're not going to try and force u to eat or talk crap because u didn't. She's in a new place by herself and is probably nervous and needs time to get use to his family her new surroundings, and him still. Ppl are different, some nervous eat but some can't when they're nervous.

I get her.. First time I went on a date with my boyfriend I was so nervous I couldn't chew properly without being awkward, it was good food at my fav restaurant I even missed my mouth a couple of times.. That was the first time I forced myself to eat with a stranger then.. Even in the comfort of my own home I'd be shy eating food if we have guests, not only dining together but sharing snacks too, its just physically hard and makes me emotionally panicky.. The first time I ate dinner at my boyfriends house was also nerve wrecking although it was nice, dining extremely made me uncomfortable, I liked the food, I wanted to eat more or look up at the table atleast while the others we're eating, I tried my best to hide it and was so worried they'd think I'm rude or manner less.. It's not entirely self explainable for me, I don't think his family was rude I get in awe seeing ppl eating comfortably, I try to get better and I completely understand her situation

That 'Talk' towards the end killed me

My male cousin doesn't eat infront of any of us family. Even christmas dinner he wouldn't ever eat even one bite. No one bugged him about it. We are now in late 30s early 40s and he just started eating normally with everyone at dinner couple years ago. Not one of us 30 family members at the dinner table for holidays ever said a word about it. We never said a word about how shocked we all were, and happy to see him one day just start piling food on his plate and eat like everyone else. He never has had eating disorders or thin build, no problems with food. He said one day when he was ready to everyone before we ate that he was so happy he was excepted and not made fun of or judged for eating in private. He also said the reason he now can eat with everyone is he now realizes everyone makes noise when they chew food, crunching sounds. So for whatever reason that was his issue with eating infront of people. He didn't want people to hear him chewing. He always ate, just sat at the table for dinner drinking tea, but eat in a bedroom alone after everyone was finished. It didn't bother any of us, his family, we never embarrassed him for his insecurities. We all have our own issues to overcome. He overcame his when he was ready. I just want to share his story to hopefully help another family understand it's ok to have someone with insecurities that are more noticeable then others. And please try to remember that family should be everyone's safe space. There isn't much worse then being judged by the very ones who are supposed to love use and except us for who we are.

I had problems like this for about a year b/c my Mum obsessed over how I was (apparently) “smacking” my lips. When I left home at 18, the problem went away b/c I wasn’t actually making any more noise while eating than any other person does. (I love my Mum, may she rest in peace. Just a weird little thing, I suppose.)

I had that issue as a kid. It went somewhere from around 10 to 17 years old. You will probably get over it. But in the mean time dont let in ruin your experiences going out. My trick to getting through it was to eat in the corner of restaurants with my back facing everyone. I still went out because I was worried my little issue would turn to something bigger like agoraphobia if I didnt push myself through it. And like the other commenter said, dont care what other people think. I tell myself now that if I had cared little less, I would have lived a lot more. I deff live a lot more now. 🙂

Okay the mail order bride thing, when she said it's the "technical deffinition" like no honey, that is the deffinition. Mail order bride situation where a broker and "agency" is involved is very different from a man and a woman from 2 different countries meeting online. Guy is right, some people really are ignorant.
