Before my blessing i talked to the man giving it to me for a bit, and i told him i was an artist. In my blessing it said if i make art that prompts the spirit in people that i will be a successful artist, which was my dream at the time. I was really depressed and suicidal and all my art was really dark. I felt so guilty about it. I stopped drawing because i couldn’t get myself to draw something that “brought the spirit”. After i left i got into art again and was able to produce a lot of stuff. i found my inner artist again and fell back in love with creating. Now i make erotic paintings of women cause I’m gay lmaooo

I mean its entirely possible for dark art to inspire the spirit in people. Some of my most powerful aspects of my testimony are how well I can see the adversary working against me. Maybe the erotic part is a bit more of an obsession/ addiction that is developed as we knock our heads against all the things we think will bring us happiness in our lives. Embrace that spiritual connection with your dark side, and make some art, that allows the Gift God Gave you to speak truth to the hearts of people who only you can understand!!

When I got my blessing at 14, my parents told the patriarch that I was super into theatre and did lots of genealogy work, so anything unique or specific in it was related to that. It said that my “talents” would be used to bring the gospel to many people. Ironically, before I began doubting the church, I had a traumatic experience in theatre that made me unable to perform without having panic attacks. Reading my patriarchal blessing and knowing that I would never live up to it made an already hard thing so much more painful, because I thought I must’ve done something terribly wrong for God not to fulfill his promise. Those “blessings” do real harm 😕

When I was in the ICU in the hospital, my TMB mother thought that reading my blessing would help "buoy me up" during that trial. I had a panic attack listening to that and the nurse even took my phone away because I was spasming so hard it was messing with the machines I was hooked up to. Needless to say, that contributed to breaking my shelf. I agree, the blessings can do some harm.

Aw, I’m sad to hear that. But I get it. I was married to a Special Forces Army man and things were not happy. And for a long time, I couldn’t read it. I’ve since mostly memorized the blessing. What I’ve realized is that all had to happen so I could become a stronger person. Mine is pretty l.o.n.g. So at the end of it, things really get wrapped in a nicer “bow’ so-to-speak. And as long as I do the “Primary Answers”-scriptures, prayers, etc., Church, I am able to feel the Savior’s love for me. But I’m thankful for the bad and crazy times, now. Haven’t always been. Best wishes.

  • @scottb4509

    @scottb4509

Just as with almost all blessings they are contingent upon our faithfulness and actions. blessings can be just as prescriptive as they are descriptive. It's an encouragement to focus on certain aspects or details so that your path isn't dictated by others or by your circumstances, but rather are under your control. No one would argue that getting pregnant as an unmarried teen was a huge life altering circumstance from living in such a way that would be worthy of serving a mission. maybe the blessing was telling her to stay focused on a mission so that she wouldn't fall pregnant as a single teen mom, and she obviously didn't stay focused enough to keep her path in that direction, but was tempted by boys and her life is now altered forever. we may never know what she could have accomplished or done down that alternative path or who she would now be. There is a reason as to why they call patriarchal blessings personal scripture. it's meant to be guidance for you to listen to and follow, not unalterable prophecy.

I think some patriarchs may be in tune enough to relate things they feel spiritually. Some not and a lot of it is repetition across the board. This was in the 50's and I was just getting into Civil Rights, and repelled by the racism in the church. On the way home, my sister cried and said my blessing was better than hers, so I told her, "No problem, you can have mine. I don't want it anyway, cause it's a bunch of hooey." Needless to say, I fully left soon thereafter, although my mother, who was a cultist obscessive, beat me over the head with church doctrine for the rest of my life until she died at age 97. Looking back I realize that I likely wasn't worthy anyway, but I did it because I was terrified to speak in front of people. But that doesn't mean that the shame is necessarily external. I was judging myself far more than anyone else was. I get that the judgy culture is very prevalent in Mormonism but I also know that we often times project our judgment of ourselves onto others, as if it was actually them judging us. This happens more than we think it does. which in and of itself is actually us judging them more than it is them judging us.

I totally agree. Sometimes we believe others are judging us when they aren’t. I’ve definitely seen judgement though by Mormons especially when an inactive member came to church back when I was in high school. I was the only person at church to speak to him. In a little town everyone knows everything about everyone. It does seem that Mormons are less judgy outside of Utah. There really is a culture thing in Utah. But then again there’s a culture specific in the Philippines where 80% of people are catholic. There’s judgement everywhere but less I find in large cities with a huge mix of diversity.

My patriarchal blessing was an emotional roller coaster for me. I think I got it when I was 19 and living in a densely populated Mormon area I was asked constantly why I didn’t have it. I was worried about what it would contain and when I got it, and whether I was ready to receive it. When I got it I was shocked. I got less than a page of blessing a total of 3 paragraphs one of which was a introduction similar to lex’s and another was the conclusion that was basically the same as lex’s with the morning of the resurrection and what not. It also included both personal, nothing about my spouse or children, callings anything. It had a short section about being part of the tribe of ephraim, them almost verbatim the per about talents and missionary work. That was it the whole thing. So I started asking around to all my friends the shortest other blessing I heard of was a page and a half, but basically everyone had 2.5 to 3 pages. Everyone else had a section about callings and marriage, it made me feel like god didn’t care about me or expected/prepared anything for me. But now I now it’s flack and it’s comforting to know that so many people have the same rehashed stuff. Thank you for coming to my TEDex-mormon talk

When I met with the patriarch, he spoke with me and asked about my journey to the LDS faith. The bulk of my blessing dealt with my mother and how my spirit will lead her to the true church, by my example. Well. I no longer speak to my mother, and I am no longer a member of the church. There was a story of a young man who was going on his mission and wanted to get his blessing before he went out. His family wanted to read it or learn what it said and he said no and wouldn’t let them read it or tell them anything it said. He later died two weeks out on his mission and when his family got his stuff, they read that it said he would die on his mission but he would have all the blessings of exhalation. At the time I though “wow. How amazing to have that faith. I’d be terrified.” Now I both giggle at my naïveté and want to yell at that. Like, dude. Wtf.

Could be a coincidence, but based on research about near death experiences, etc. I think everyone has some capacity for spiritual inspiration whether they're in the Church or not, through connecting with other spirits. My point is the patriarch may have been inspired to say that he would die on his mission, but that doesn't mean that the Church has the priesthood! It means maybe he should have heeded the warning.

That's why I left. I finally realized that the lesson I hadn't yet learned from all my experiences, the one that explained them all and tied them all together was one simple one: "The church leaders aren't inspired. Not even a little bit. Not at all." I even tested it out by having weekly visits with a bishop (and sometimes his counselors) where I spoke to him plainly, openly, and honestly only to be told that he wasn't convinced. So one final time, in a meeting with him and both his counselors, I stared at my shoes most the time instead of looking him in the eyes, blinked a lot, lied my ass off, and acted choked up. The 3 of them then told me how much they were overwhelmed with "The Spirit" and impressed with the breakthrough. And that was just the last of many examples in my life of their lack of inspiration or divine guidance.

Great video Lex! Interestingly, I've talked to quite a few people who left the church when they were in the second half of their life (who had received patriarchal blessings as young people) and realized how totally inaccurate many were simply due to the specificity of them. For example, one acquaintance was told she would be a missionary and sent to Haiti. She was sent to France by the "inspired" leaders in the church (who obviously hadn't checked out her PB in advance). Another was told that she and her husband ("eternal companion") would be married in a temple "in the lands of Nephi within a decade." They were married in a temple in Hawaii as that is where her husband was from. (As you know, the church doesn't claim that Hawaii had ANYTHING to do with the coming forth of the Book of Mormon though they have shifted back and forth over the years as to whether the events took place in North or South America). All of these events in their lives occurred way BEFORE they left the church so the church can't claim their usual fallback position which of course is "the PB only is accurate if you stay worthy, blah blah, blah ." I can't help but believe the leaders have now given some sort of directive to patriarchs to make blessings VERY general now for these reasons. When I listened to yours I can see how generic it is.

We can just walk away!" It was a standing joke for years. Plus the guy was at least 500 years old and was swaying back and forth. My husband was afraid he was going to pitch over the altar. He didn't talk above a whisper and quite a few of my relatives came up to us afterwards and said that they could not hear anything he said. But as we all know who were married in the temple it only takes about two and a half minutes to get married anyway . Very meaningful. I think he would have been better suited to be a worker at the veil. At least if he had pitched over there there would have been plenty of people to catch him instead of just me and my husband!

The sealer always tells the couple to look at HIM during the sealing. Dressed up in those bizarre clothes with your husband looking like a baker and your beautiful wedding dress covered with temple clothes and ugly veil. They see the bright eyed couple come out of the temple in "real" wedding clothes and assume they missed seeing them walk down the aisle etc. If only they knew......(Now they can. So I grew up in a fairly small stake on the east coast. The stake patriarch was in my ward and his wife was my activity day leader when I was in primary. I knew him really well and he knew me and some of my challenges (medical) too. So I feel like my blessing was more specific than most and while I was a believing member I felt like it answered so many of my questions/fears and in my blessing it talked about how special I was and that god had really big plans for me and my future family. After that blessing I felt really chosen and blessed. I read books about women in the scriptures and about the mothers of prophets because I wanted to be prepared for whatever god had in store. Now I know that he just knew me really well and probably just saw a lot of potential in me (I was the only rule following person in the ward in my age group). The irony is that most of the people that didn't follow the mormon rules in HS are now very active and believing...and I am not haha

Came across your channel today and wanted to share some love. I was also born and raised in the church. It was a shock to my family when I left over a decade ago... my PB was very similar to yours- although it went into a lot of detail about my “future husband” and all the babies we would have (I’m now divorced from an abusive Asshole and am infertile.. oh but I stopped “being faithful” so I guess that makes sense LOL) When I left the church, my parents said “you always had such a strong testimony, what happened?” Well, kids are like sponges. They soak everything up and spit it back out! Of COURSE I had a “strong” testimony! My family did everything right... of course I would be everything I had ever known... and then I had some experience. I began to be faced with things like peer pressures, social situations, politics, forming my own opinions, asking questions that were hard for the church to answer- told I should pray about it- came back with answers the church didn’t like- began feeling like the church might not be as true as I thought? And if that part wasn’t true... is any of it? Obviously, we all know where that led... Anyway- I wanted to reach out and thank you for entertaining me today (: know that you are loved

I got, my Patriarchal Blessing in 1974 at the age 15, at the time I really thought was unique to me later on I compared my blessing to ones I saw on line and I could see that my blessing was pretty generic. 1 unique thing in my blessing emphasized twice was my linage, it blessed me that I born into house of Ephraim and told me that I was descended from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and then went on how I should be grateful to God for allowing to be born of such a favored linage. Now my skin is white and my eyes are blue and my features are Germanic, my mother’s family was all from Puerto and her families language was Spanish, At the time blacks were not allowed to hold the priesthood, last year my oldest son got me a DNA test for Christmas, my results from the test said that I was 3% black and I thought to myself how did the Patriarch spend so much time on my linage and miss my black DNA. Brigham Young was very specific that if you had so much as 1 drop of black blood that you should not have the priesthood and you had the curse of Cain I was a Deacon at time of the blessing. I remember hearing stories about members who while doing their genealogy before 1978 who found a black ancestor and ended up losing their priesthood and having their temple marriage devolved losing their blessing of temple marriage.

My PB was the thing that kept my testimony going for so long. I got it after I was already married and my husband, parents, and brother came with me when I got it. The blessing had a lot of content about my pre-earth life and claimed that I had a hand in creating the earth. How could you not hold on to that belief? There was a lot of fluffy language in it too, it really sounded like scripture. It had a few lines about reading scriptures and that there are special messages just for me in the Book of Mormon. I was blessed with the restoration of the “stalwart testimony” I had in the pre-existence and that I would bring others to Christ just as I had done before. Now I don’t believe in Mormonism anymore and I’m questioning if I believe in God at all.

Mom: "They are completing their patriarchal blessing by serving as a missionary to those in spirit prison." I just accepted that logic back then but now I see that this logic could extend to almost anything you could do. If you live forever then at one point you will probably do everything and certainly every vague thing guessed at by some old man.

It's amazing what people will begin to consider and believe when they are lost and in search of something to ground them in their lives. I was born and raised Mormon and many of the converts I knew had trauma linked to drugs, drinking etc. and were therefore drawn to a religion where not doing that is a rule you're supposed to follow, so they never had to think about it much anymore. Also missionaries invite people to be baptized before they ever find out about some of the bigger, more mystical parts of the LDS religion. I had convert friends who came to church and were really thrown off when they found out some of the weird details that the rest of us saw as normal, but they had never heard of in the lessons. In short, it's pretty much a trap.

Another very nicely done video Lexi. As for my own patriarchal blessing I will say that I had specific promises extended along with council regarding being able to provide well for my family. Considering the fact that I overpaid tithing I kept the Sabbath better than anyone I knew and I worked my ass off as well as following the council it was certainly demonstrative of how false these blessings were in my experience. another point that I would make here is that patriarchal blessings essentially teach the same racist theology that the church now disavows in its race and the priesthood gospel topic essay regarding how our premortal qualifying round places us in a certain lineage. Obviously being born into the tribe of Ephraim is because of how righteous you were they just no longer actively teach that if you weren't quite so worthy you could wind up Chinese and if you were really on the fence between the devil and the Lord you'd wind up in deepest darkest Africa. Although this may sound a bit outrageous to younger members of the church not so carefully indoctrinated you will find that elder Mark e Peterson of the quorum of The twelve was very specific in a particular general conference talk on exactly those items

You have a telent for teaching. And u see things for truth. My pariatical blessing basically sounds the same. I think they are told what to say.or go by a hand guide haha, my lineage is from the house of manassah, thats one of my big?'s. Maybe u should have a video about lineage. Another good learning video. Thank u

When the blessing said you’ll come forth the morning of the first reserection I audibly gasped and had to stop the video. And then you said that’s a very common one to get… I got that in mine and I thought I was so special.. i can’t believe it…

Wow, I never thought about there being more than one heavenly mother. Also, I 100% believed they were getting “revelation”. I felt betrayed when I realised it wasn’t true.

Looking back on it, having served in the bishopric, I just now realized that I never received a patriarchal blessing. Guess it's not a job requirement. Whew.....

So how did you serve in the bishopric? I saw one of your comments on another channel where you said that you slept with 400 women after seeing boobs in the sears catalog. So how did you go from that to serving in the bishopric. It sounds like it would be an interesting story, which is why I'm asking.

@@floydfreaktc1 I think it was on one of the brother Jake videos. I don't remember which one now since that was over a month ago. I was on a binge watching lots of Mormon videos and he made that comment. He said he was in the military so it was easy to get laid.

Mine says "As you go about your high school and young adult years there will be challenges that will come to you. As you are worthy, you will be able to overcome them." As a teenager, I was severely depressed and anxious. I did everything I could to be a good member but felt like since I was still struggling with mental health I wasn't worthy. It really did a number on me, honestly!

Church sucks. The mental hurdles we all put ourselves through to accept it was crazy
