I left the church after 20 years in it. Life has never been better. We need more ex mormons speaking out like you do to show that life truly begins after leaving a cult.

Trigger warning. I want to talk about baptism at 8 years old. I was talking to a friend who recently left the church. She told me that she vividly remembers trying to run in the road in front of cars when she was seven years old because she wanted to go to heaven before she reached Mormon age of accountability. Eight. For me, just after my baptism, also eight, I got a ÚTI, and I thought I was committing a sexual sin by scratching myself to ease the pain. I thought “this is my first sin.” Also, if Jesus did happen to ever live, he would have been a full grown adult, possibly in his 30s when he was baptized. At eight, you’re old enough to think your making the decision to be baptized, but young enough to not recognize cultural and societal pressures leading you to that decision. A promise made under societal expectations. Eight year olds are not old enough to be making lifelong commitments.

Getting baptised according to what I think you are talking about is being put under physical water, which isn't exactly a lifelong commitment. The commitment probably came from the expectation of the people around, not necessarily according to God. Being put into physical water won't do harm. I can't recall the bible mentioning a commitment is made when a person gets baptised. I believe it was the people around who asked you to make the commitment to keep the commandments during the physical baptism. God knows your heart so even if you might not have understood everything, God knows and hears you. He will guide you.

Syria Leong You are exactly right about the people around us teaching us this. Lds church doctrine teaches that it’s a lifelong commitment to follow lds commandment (under the guise that it’s god’s commandments). They teach that at 8 years old you are now accountable for your sins.

True. In the remote town I grew up in you had to be Mormon if you wanted any degree of success or community. Mormons were encouraged to dissociate from any non mormons. Leaving the church can cost some people everything.

I am an ex-Jehovah's Witness (born and raised) and upon hearing Lex describe the Mormons, I realized the similarities are absolutely frightening! Run❗️🏃‍♂️

The last time the missionaries were over my husband hadn't gotten home from work yet. We stood on my porch and I told them all the reasons I no longer believed in the church. They have never come back! I wonder why that could possibly be. 🤔

I grew up in Utah in a very prominent mormon family. I am now 66 y.o. and am an atheist. I left the church in my late teens. Nothing has brought me more happiness than leaving the church and realizing all the religious myths are bullshit. I have a gay daughter and I love her dearly. I always doubted the church's b.s. stories and the bible's b.s. stories. Also, moving away from Utah was a great improvement; you should consider doing this. I raised my daughter as a secular humanist, against her mother's wishes. I didn't want her to feel like a "sinner " her whole life. She is grown now and believes like me. I am impressed with your story. It is very difficult rejecting something one has been indoctrinated with since childhood. I was a born skeptic, but you reached the same conclusion using objective reasoning and study. There will be an endless effort to suck you back in. RESIST!

Did you lose family, friends and community by not being Mormon? Not having family any more makes me sad, but I had to live according to what felt right for me. I refuse to be part of a cult that demeans women and teaches that anyone who isn't mormon is "evil".

I wholeheartedly agree with moving out of Utah. It helps tremendously. You might never be able to fully escape Mormons since the missionaries are everywhere and the church will track you down, but Utah is so very isolating and you don't even fully realize it until you've left.

My experience in the Mormon church was one of abuse. It was verbal, mental, emotional and sexual, and usually at the hands of the infallible members of the priesthood. It's as if the Melchizedek priesthood gave them the right to do whatever the pleased. I was so brainwashed, That as late as high school and even into adulthood, I believed that all my friends were Mormon because they were amazing people. SURPRISE!!! They weren't all Mormon. This caused me so much internal conflict. Not only am I an Exmo, I don't even believe in organized religion. What I do believe, is that all organized religions are cults and that we should all be good human beings for the sake of being a good human beings and not because we're afraid of going to hell because were shockingly enough HUMANS! Thank you for doing this. I respect your honesty and bravery.

They really do!

There are also Mormons that know everything about the disturbing history of the church and yet they still choose to stay there they won’t tell you lies and have their own opinions. The ones that really annoy me are the ones that know fully well about the history of the church and just give a lot of excuses no matter how wrong and imoral things are.

This was me for most of my life. My family all talked about mountain meadows masacre, stories of Brigham young. I’d heard all about blood atonement. I knew about Joseph Smiths wives. I knew about Fanny Alger. I knew about the Book of Abraham.The stone in the hat, I’d read many of the different versions of the first vision. I still believed for a very long time. I think what got me was knowing all this and eventually not being able to handle it. I read the CES letter and none of it was new information to me. I had grown up learning about the things in there. A few months after reading the CES letter, though, I thought. How can I know all this and be morally okay with it all? Now I don’t want to participate in the madness.

That doesn’t mean that I hold a victim mentality, though! It’s more a matter of realization and being able to live life to the fullest. With your “victim toga” comment. I completely agree. It's really popular amongst people my age (late teens, twenties) to be "woke Mormons," which pretty much means they support LGBTQ+ people, denounce the church's racist past, push for more equality between the genders, etc. I was like that before leaving too -- I get the good intentions behind it and that the church's institutional actions are beyond the members' control. However, they seem to conveniently forget that they actively give a chunk of their financial earnings to the church every year. It's frustrating.

I'm right there with you Lex. Granted I'm only 20 coming up 21, but still I have NO idea how I managed to balance High School, Seminary, and then eventually a part-time job as well during my senior year. The church definitely sets a lot of stuff on your plate if you're going for TBM... 😆

In Mormonism, fear of leaving isn't irrational, especially if you live in Utah or areas of Idaho. It often means losing family, friends and even your job - a very high price indeed. Escape is made such a scary thought for many Mormons that it is not even conceivable.

This literally resonated so much with me. I am sick of mormons saying they aren't a cult, that the prophet is imperfect (but also don't go astray), that they are choosing to be there and aren't pressured, and that they accept every type of lifestyle and that this is just another normal lifestyle. IT. IS. A. CULT. Thank you so much for talking about this. Hopefully more mormons will be able to get out of it and live fulfilling WHOLE lives.

Oh, how I relate to all of this! I work for a family that has a daughter with special needs. I've been helping with her for 14 years. It started in the nursery, and a year later they were able to hire me to come be their daughter's caregiver. They were mine and my husband's temple escorts when we took out our endowments. We are extremely close, we spend holidays together and are more like family. When they told me about the things they had learned and how they had become disillusioned with the church, my head spun. At first I felt so much worry for them and their salvation, I thought, "oh Satan must have his hooks in them"! I started feeling all of this guilt about looking at even the church essays. My stomach was in knots and I felt so much sadness. I too thought the spirit had just left me and that's why I had felt that way. I read through all of the essays within a few hours and when I finished reading the essay about the Book of Abraham, I felt the guilt melt away. I realized it was all a lie. I honestly felt relieved! I didn't have to pretend to be happy in the church anymore. It is painfully obvious on this side of things that the church is definitely a cult.

Yes. You can get a temple recommend as young as 12, and you have to be a full tithe player in order to receive one. Most Mormon parents have their children pay tithing as soon as they are old enough to receive money.

Really appreciate your presentations. It has helped me with my own clearance of "crap" and in many ways an education. Personally, I started questioning things in the Church when I was pretty young. One thing that really bothered me was all the hypocrites. Jerks in many ways and then repentance made during Fast and Testimony Meeting. At the age of 17, I jumped off the wagon. My family was disappointed but accepted my actions. In fact, many, many years later, my dad told me, just short of his passing, that he was proud of me and my critical thinking regarding the Church. Needless to say, it was highly moving.

I grew up in the church and gradually my whole family left while I was a teenager, and we couldn't be happier!! I don't feel like I have the right to call what I or my family went through "religious abuse", but that's what it was. It was fear, it was guilt, it was manipulation, and in the end it turned right into extortion!! This is why i have this heightened fear or mistrust whenever I feel someone's trying to suck me into something or manipulate me, be it some MLM pyramid scheme recruiter, political propaganda on social media, or even something as mundane as a job interview. I have a hard time trusting people, and a harder time with any kind of "indoctrination". If anyone tells you to just accept any sort of beliefs or rituals without question, it's predatory and manipulative..... With Mormonism, they get you right when you're young and vulnerable.

Actually, many of us completely reject religion and become non-believers.

A friend from my past told me that her husband's sister left the Baptist church to be with her then fiancee at the time ( likely now married ) a member of the LDS. He says his sister is being brain washed, they no longer talk to each other. His wife told me about the LDS saying it's not a religion but a cult. When I visited the church, the people were friendly but I felt evil. I think that's where the cult life lies within. I'm so glad I never visited again and never will.

As an atheist, I did not know about LDS until I came to the U.S. and I could not believe how extreme of a religion it is and how do people follow it, especially in a developed and free country. Thank you for reviewing this and presenting this research. This model reminds of that talk 16 years ago when Monson or Packar said that people leave the Church because they have gotten "offended"! I knew in my mind that, that was a symptom of anti-objectivity. Doesn't the individual have an objective, reliable or valid way of understanding the world? This was part of the reason I left the Church. Also, just a side note, even if people don't want to say "Members of the Church..." people could say the LDS in the same way one says the Catholics or the Protestants , etc.

With respect to your comment about leaders not intentionally hurting anyone... I would argue that mind control, employed by the Church is vile and is hurting people and they know what they are doing.

Excellent video. Your presentation will hopefully wake people to the serious qualities and practices the Mormon church does that purely and clearly qualify it as Cult. The Mormon church does about every single thing the BITE model describes. I am so grateful to have escaped the grip of Mormonism. Now that I look back at my time as a member, I am myself shocked I was ever a member of that organization.

I have this book and highly recommend it! I think the example of the guy in the book was questioning at a time when the internet etc was not around? But I could be wrong on that one.

There's an old saying that says "CULT plus TIME equals RELIGION." Something to think about for everyone.

I have been away from the Church for over forty years, yet I still enjoy someone your generation looking thoughtfully at this cult. I recently went on a date with a Mormon woman, I feel strongly for her, but I know in my heart, her beliefs right now would not allow me to ever get into a serious relationship with her, it pains me to know this, but it not my job to "open their eyes" and potentially scar her for the rest of her life. Well, I don't think that is right either. If she can live her life in her sense of "happiness" then who am I to intervene with that. I believe it would be wrong. I'm in a dilemma, and either way I am going to regret both of my options for the rest of my life.

speaking of the picture of Jesus you were mentioning. The church has this infamous picture of Jesus, it's a portrait of him, and the members would teach in class, that if you bend the picture towards the middle of his face (left or right) , you could see either half of his face upset or happy (btw i tried this and it's true, you can see it lol). Once you saw the differences, they taught you that if you saw (the picture as a whole) the picture everyday, you could tell whether Jesus was happy or not happy with you, i do believe that is a cult tactic.

I really liked your video and agreed with most of what you said being a member of the church. However, regarding some of the standards about extreme hairstyles vary according to what ward your in. I agree that the leaders have said some things about having extreme hairstyles, but some wards can be much more lenient about those things. When it comes to the true definition of the word cult as it relates to organized religion when it's too hazy. I agree that groups of people and organizations, especially religious organizations, have been guilty of some amazing good and awful evil in the world. I agree there's way too much reliance on the leaders, particularly on the 15 men in the church headquarters, and the church itself instead God whether most of them are aware that is being taught or not. I notice some of those men are trying to de-emphasize that over-dependence on them, though. I used to believe I had to be truly perfect in order to be a member of the church. Unfortunately, emphasizing perfection can lead to religious scrupulosity, which is a form of OCD. Now with God's help, I'm doing much better. Anyway, your video was great.

I'm sure some areas aren't as weird about it as others, however it is in the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet. Utah is probably the worst as far as judgement about it.

I knew it was a cult the moment I watched newnamenoah's hidden camera videos. I had only been to baptisms for the dead as a teen. Never new what happened for the marriage "ceremony" or other "ceremonies". I married outside of the church and wasn't looking forward to garments so I never bothered to get my endowments. Glad I didn't bother. If I had done everything to go get my endowments and then saw what they do with my own eyes I don't think I could have held back my disgust and anger in the temple. I was already beside myself watching those videos at home and full of anger. Sorry that was long...

Lex I do agree that most low leaders in the LDS church do have the right motives and they truly believe that the churches is the true church and the message of the gospel is good like my son's great grandfather who was a Bishop in Orem. Now what i find interesting that in the Bible Jesus was always confronted again and again with overly religious Jewish zealots of his day. They tried to catch him saying something heretical in order to trap him and claim him blasphemous. He knew their motives when asking questions. When they accused the woman caught in adultery he said "Whoever is without sin cast the first stone." Everntually everyone left because they knew they weren't perfect. When angry he called them one time "You brood of vipers!!!" AKA "YOU SNAKES". My favorite thing he ever said to them. LOL Jesus didn't call people to be "perfect" but love God and love your neighbor as yourself.

Probably, but few programs that create lifestyles aren’t a little culty. Weight Watchers, Best Buy Camera sales, corporate jobs, etc. How do we get more peaceful anarchy in all structure? I spent years in the Unitarian Universalist association thinking about how.

They wouldn't call it zombies, but there is belief in resurrection. In fact, the belief is that everyone will be resurrected, even those who bypass death by being "translated" to heaven (like Elijah and others; en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Translation_(Mormonism)), though, arguably, I don't think you'd call translated beings zombies since they never died in the first place. My family was against calling resurrected people "zombies" since (I guess) it implied evil/magic forces, unlike God's awesome/righteous power. That's just my perspective/experience, though.

What I find most bizarre is the "I know this church is true." I hope you understand that all Christian denominations have leaders usually have advanced degrees and are paid full time. And, attend seminary. Seminary is not a 6:00 am room half full of mormon high school kids. So "you give your 'testimony' and then you end it with this is how I know the church is true." I had a mormon friend in middle school and high school so I went to her ward a few times. It was a testimony meeting. A woman holding a crying baby and crying because she had been blessed with 7 children, she "knows the church was true." I am a Christian from a Christian family. I have never seen anything like it. Totally bizarre. Nothing Biblical during the entire 3 hours. This was in the early 80s. We remain friends and I noticed in the beginning of the 90s she started mentioned Jesus. I think the internet has been very bad for the mormon church.

The LDS church is really the poster child of the BITE model; um, if the LDS church is the quintessential cult...

Here's one definite difference between a religion and a cult: A religion will take all comers, and join with those who have common beliefs and aspirations, and forget those who don't. A cult will not abide criticism of either the organization nor the duly anointed ones, and will go to great lengths to penalize and punish those who fail to recognize this prohibition--usually making it as painful and public as possible. Social pressure is used as a great tool to keep people in line, and keep the heat on for acceptable conformity.

OK so I’m part of this church and I get where you’re coming from but the thing is I really like this church maybe everyone has their own opinions on but I think about a cult every churches account because they follow Jesus Christ of it all depends on what you hear what you say about a church or how you feel about it on the other thing is where I’m from they are very lenient and very nice and helpful but maybe the church where you’re from or you were raised in was a totally different church and church so you didn’t feel it was right for you and I feel like that’s what happens to a lot of people. And I know some LDS people that actually I left the church for a lot of reasons and they do come back and then I met so many other people who actually left the church that they don’t come back but they still exist support this religion because you’re changing in a good way but maybe for you it’s kind of different . So other thing is like we are focus on negativity we will see focus on positivity other son to strengthen us losing his leg if something bad happens to you is because of your actions or something like another nature or something like that but we don’t believe in C in as much work I don’t believe in sane but maybe other people do it so somethings do you happen to them because they believe in that and I do not so that’s why I’m always positive so I just everything is different for me compared everybody else special has it on experience on opinions and you might be having a different view on this

I'm sure as a believing Mormon, many of the things she is saying sound quite harsh and like details are blown out of proportion/taken out of context. As she said, most of the people in the church do not have malicious intentions to control people and are very kind individuals who simply love God and want to do what they believe is true and right. However, that does not mean that the church as an organization is not based on tenets and tactics that restructure your worldview and aim to keep you in line, constantly feeling like you have to give everything you are to the organization. The fact is that do not give you the full details on how Joseph Smith and Brigham Young lived. Reading the CES letter can show you the holes in church history that you never saw before -- I encourage you to look into it and decide for yourself what you will do with it or if you will believe it. It was written by someone who was a believing Mormon and could not get his questions answered by the general authorities, so he researched and found the facts for himself and to share with the world. Regardless of whether or not you choose to look into that content, I do want to commend you for sharing your beliefs on a platform where many people feel the opposite and could be quick to attack.

Sydney Christensen Thank you for sharing your conversation with me I totally get it but at the same time it’s like I feel the reason why she left is because she probably lives in a state where they have multiple Mormons and she does it feel where I live in New Jersey where they treat me as respect and kindness and help me out if I needed to and yes as a Mormon or a part of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints we don’t care if you call us Mormons or not but we don’t know everything and that’s what my church tells me and we’re not perfect at all so I think that’s what she was struggling with and that’s where some people struggle with church .But some members do come back and they leave so that’s also good things and we’re OK for other people to leave the church we still love you and respect you and that’s the most important thing a lot of people need right now and that’s what Jesus showed when he was on earth .Plus the book of Mormon doesn’t have all the answers and the Bible doesn’t have all the answers either so we just wait until we die and we find out ourselves and yes I read the CDS letter that you were talking to me about

honk master So you’re saying every religion is a cult but I understand you live in Utah and there’s mostly Mormons there but there’s a lot of religions everywhere

One of my best friends told me if you can't question the Bible if you cant question the priest if you can't question the church if you can't speak out of turn if you don't have your own opinion and you don't have your own ideas you're not in a religion you're in a cult you're not in a place of love you're in a place of power ammunibulation and that is a place you should stay far away from

I remember that one time after I moved to a new area, in my typical rush I grabbing my Book of Mormon and headed to a new L.D.S. church. Well, after I arrived and settled in my comfortable chair on wheels, with my Book of Mormon proudly sitting on the table that I sat at, people were looking at me in dismay. A gentleman had brought to my attention, that I was at a Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and that they did not use the book of Mormon there. I was shocked and embarrassed for allowing this to happen to me.

Cults are just what big churches call little churches. There are lots of variations on the theme.

I have been a member for a year but never been tried to control except being asked to attend institute.
