Im from Venezuela. My country is the worst country of South America in a lot of things and one of the most violent of the entire world. The prison in the Island or Margarita is a shame for all the Venezuelans. Those inmates are in control of the prison. They can get out of the prison and return whatever they want. They can kill people outside the prison, they can rape people outside the people, and they CAN RETURN SAFELY to the prison like the prison was some fuck@n hotel. Those inmates extort innocent people outside prison. There is a gang called "El tren de aragua" that controls those prisons. There are the PRANS (they called themselves like that) and they are the most violent killers in that prison and they are the rulers of that prison. All of that with the authorization of the Maduro's regime. The inmates are allowed to have cellphones inside the prison and text SMS and call people to extort them and to tell that if they don't pay them money, they are going to kill them and going to kill their families. I'm a fan of Larry Lawton, but this topic enraged me because my people of Venezuela are starving to death ( i am not, thankfully) and those animals/criminals are outside in the streets forcing us to return to our homes before 5:00 pm because they are the owners of the streets and police here are criminals too. As a native Norwegian, I always have to defend why prisoners should have a high standard of living whenever people from other countries outside Europe ask me about it. Im super happy to hear that you understand exactly why we should treat prisoners like human beings and not as animals. Its not about not giving them punishment, taking away their freedom is punishment enough. Its about making them good people for when they get out, not just for us as members of society, but also from a socio economic perspective. Just take a number from earlier (somewhere bewteen 2010 and 2014 I cant remember) where recidivism rates in the US was up to 80% and in Norway was 20%. And most of the arguements i get back is "Well, what if a man murdered your entire family". Most of the crimes committed are not about a man murdering my entire family, its about people like junkies. And now take a junkie in either Norway or US. This person will cost society large sums of tax money through legal proceedings and free legal help from the state. They will cost money for insurance companies if they break or steal stuff to enforce their drug habits. If the person being stolen from doesnt have insurance, the cost will be directly from that person which sucks even more. If they overdose, they cost more tax money because EMT's have to revive them and give them beta blockers which cost money. They also cost money in time where police have to deal with them, and the police could spend more time catching people like murderers or rapists. Would you rather that the state try and rehabilitate that person, give them education and help, so that when they get out they can actually contribute to society? Or are you gonna punish them like animals and have them repeat the "do crime -> do time -> get out -> do crime -> do time" etc? And if a man kills my entire family, I would wish him dead. But if he doesnt die, when he gets out, I would hope that he was a functioning member of society and not murdering someones elses family.

@@lawv804i think people like that shouldn’t stop the rest of the population from being treated like human beings. also, the prison system shouldn’t be about “justice”, that’s counterproductive and doesn’t correct behaviour. a degree of punishment is part of rehabilitation but that shouldn’t be the main focus. finally, there are life sentences for those who can’t be rehabilitated (tho i think everyone can be rehabilitated to some degree)

I feel like we in america get so caught up in our illusion of Justice in wanting prisoners to be “locked up to rot” that we often forget that we need to Rehabilitate people too. But people would rather ruin people’s lives over a mistake or bad situation, because those who aren’t in that kind of situation just feel that the convicted don’t deserve a chance to be better because “why don’t I get that chance when I haven’t done anything illegal??” It’s quite sad.

There is research in peer reviewed journals that shows a strong correlation between keeping family together and going strait after being in prison (UK slang for not commiting any further crimes). One thing I found interesting is that either in Norway or Sweden there is a prison where you are expected to do two jobs. One is cleaning etc, the other is education. What many forget is that prisons ae supposed to be about rehabilitation as well as punishment. The incarceration in itself is the punishment. Some of these guys in the prison mentioned did not know how to use a washing machine or hoover etc effectively. They get taught how to do that as well as the wall washing floor sweeping and associated tasks. The only place I have seen more spotless is a barracks when the inspection is due.Wish I could find those articles again but they were behind a paywall.

You got it exactly right. The emphasis in Germany is threefold- 1. crime prevention (in the sense of giving youth many options for hobbies & activities, 6 weeks paid vacation per year and avoiding poverty through affordable healthcare, etc.) 2. deescalation when it seems a crime could happen at any moment and 3. rehabilitation if a crime is taken place. Having grown up in the US, my memory of it is that it's much more about scaring people into what would happen if they committed a crime- not about trying to show them why there are better options. Then it's all about punishiment, punishment, punishment once a crime has been commited.

I live in Japan. The prisons for the elderly, are elderly that are either on the street, or close to being on the street, have no one to assist them and cannot take care of themselves. The senior center is an apt description. They're basically harmless people whose lives suck in their declining years and the government has an obligation to help them.

I don’t ever intend on committing crimes and being incarcerated but my son is my entire world and there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for him and to be there for him. I’m willing to bet almost every prisoner able to have contact with their children more than just seeing them through thick glass will be on their BEST behavior. Recognizing the importance for both the prisoner and the child really shows that the focus is rehabilitation and not just dehumanizing and cause as much suffering as possible. For me the worst part would be the loss of freedom since I don't have many loved ones and probably never will again. I don't mean freedom in a Murica' way but the loss of choice. Like losing access to the internet, only being able to eat what I'm given when it's given to me even if it's good food, loss of access to hiking, climbing, fishing, choice of friends, even choice of clothing, etc...I need my brain stimulated or I start to go crazy. Crapping in a bucket around people? Meh... You get used to it pretty quick. But even most of the prisons on this list would drive me insane nearly immediately due to the loss of being able to do really whatever I want when I want.

It would be interesting if there was a prison that was kind like a hotel where there were cleaners and maybe even cooks and the prisoners worked those jobs and depending on how good of a job they would do they would get promoted to a better room so that the prisoners have to learn to be clean, etc and learn that working hard pays off in the end

what angers me the most is the fact that here in Poland, prison serve better food (quality and amount wise) that public healthcare systems when typically if you have been operated for example you get ridiculously low amount of food (its not issue of diet but lack of money for keeping the hospital canteen) :/

Hi Larry, could u do a video on Joran van der Sloot, once we know more about the jail (I assume not prison) he is going to? Things like what is the jail like, what would it be like for him once he arrives, food, daily routine, risk of violence towards him and would he be in solitary confinement based on his profile, would he have interaction with other prisoners, etc. That would be great, thanks!

Larry, I agree that the United States’ prison complex is in shambles. It is broken. I will admit my ignorance at even attempting to conceive a solution to this massive problem. However, one belief I still hold is that criminals who have mens rea should face punishment first, rehabilitation second, varying on the effects of their crime.

My friend in northern California, hes in jail there, you get to keep your cell phone, charger and limited internet wifi service, they dont have pay phones on the walls, he's in there for the next 8 months, i can call him and send money to his books. That alone helps him doing time! He can watch youtube, listen to music, text and everything. Looks like some jails get it.

I can see why the prison in Venezuela could be better, but I would still argue the Norweigen prison is better because I reckon the re-offending rate afterwards is probably lower because they do more to focus on re-habilitation. I could be wrong though. Anyway great video!!
