I agree with you, 1851 is my favorite also. I think the lighter caliber, had better control for accuracy. I think Wild Bill carried two Navies, in his belt. My question is, where these pistols able to be change to cartridge later after the Civil War?

You are correct about Hickock. He carried those percussion Navy revolvers even after cartridge guns were available. The next video in the series will take a look at the so called conversions. Spoiler alert, most were actually built from parts left over from the percussion era. Also, most were built on the 1860 Army frame. I was asked a year or so ago to catalog and evaluate a private gun collection in Cheyenne. One was a very actual conversion to cartridge of an 1851 Navy. According to my research, the U.S. Navy had 1851 models in inventory. They sent them back to Colt to be modified to take a .38 Colt cartridge. Although nominally a .36 caliber, the 1851 actually took a .375 ball. The backstrap on the gun in the private collection was stamped with a marking that documented a return to Navy stores. That's the only factory conversion of the 1851 that I'm aware of. Like the cobbled work on the 1861, it's possible that some were converted outside the factory. We have an 1851 in the collection that has been very nicely modified - barrel shortened, loading lever removed, etc. Scroll back through early videos and you might find it.

@@wsmvolunteers8588 Thanks, I have learned a lot about the west's weapons, due to you. You really do a great job. The only other thing that pops in my mind is, the pistol and the rifle were usually the same caliber, so one type of ammo is needed. I really thought it was a 44 or 45. I never would have thought it was a 38. Thanks.

@@outdoorlife5396 You are correct. The matching of rifle and revolver cartridges was most common after 1873 when the Colt Single Action Army and the Winchester Model 1873 were introduced. Both the Colt and the Winchester were eventually chambered in .32-20, .38-40, and .44-40. The Winchester Model 1892 was also available in those three calibers. Owners had the option of the same ammunition for their rifle and handgun. While the Colt was originally chambered in .45, Winchester rifles were not. The .45 Colt cartridge had a narrow rim that could have caused extraction problems in a rifle. However, in the 20th Century, Italian made replicas of Winchester rifles were made in .45 Colt. I used a .45 Colt caliber 1866 replica rifle in Cowboy Action shooting matches and it was very reliable.
