The Wyoming State Museum has a remarkable collection of historic firearms related to the state of Wyoming. Someday I hope to get there and see them in person. Thanks for your time and effort to bring these interesting and beautiful firearms to the public along with the interesting stories behind them, Evan.

I speculate that Colt revolvers survived at least in part because they were aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Some Colt competitors were just ugly.

I used a replica Winchester 1866 rifle in.45 Colt and a pair of Ruger Vaqueros in that caliber when I was active in Cowboy Action competition. Neat caliber. Expensive commercially. I used a Dillon 550 and reloaded my own.

What was the most popular caliber on the frontier? for men or women. I would think an easy-to-get caliber would be in consideration, also.

If we look only at 1st generation Colt Single Action Army revolvers (made 1873 to 1940), 158,885 were caliber .45 Colt. About 30,000 of those were Army issue, the rest purchased by civilians. The .44-40 counted 71,391, none to the military. The .44-40, .38-40, and .32-20 were popular because Winchester made the Model 1873 and 1892 rifles and carbines in those calibers. So you could carry one caliber of ammunition for handgun and long gun. As for women, some such as Calamity Jane and Belle Starr, carried the same handguns as the men. But small derringers were also popular such as the Remington Model 95 double barrel in .41 Rimfire or the Sharps 4-barrel in .22, .30, and .32 rimfire. Yes, availability of ammunition was a consideration. Smith & Wesson revolvers were also in use on the frontier. In fact, the first metallic cartridge adopted by the Army was the S&W Model 3 in .44 American. The Army also purchased break top Smith & Wesson Schofields in .45 Schofield. These were soon abandoned because they were not as robust as the Colt SAA and would not chamber the .45 Colt cartridge. Military being the military, some units with Schofields received .45 Colt ammunition. The SAA would chamber the Schofield cartridge, but not the reverse.
