Evolution Of Bike Design? Canyon KIS - First Ride Review

Спорт

Are we looking at the next big mountain bike innovation? A technology that will go down in history in the same category as the disc brake or the suspension fork?
The first performance benefit targeted by K.I.S. stems from the natural weight distribution of a bicycle - light up front, with just the fork and front wheel plus the (small) percentage of your weight; and much heavier in the rear. This gives the front end a much lower Moment of Inertia, making it more sensitive to impulse forces and therefore easier to unsettle. The benefit of the K.I.S. system here is that the “connection” that is created effectively adds weight to the front of the bike when a force tries to knock it off line, adding stability, especially through rough terrain.
The second phenomenon they’re aiming to solve, and one that was harder for me to wrap my head around initially, is the effects of wheel flop. When you turn the bars, you create a relative angle between the tire and ground, causing the tire contact patch to lift up. This creates wheel flop, and the weight of the rider creates a force on the steering system which makes it fall over. When you turn, you effectively lift a component of the bike-and-rider weight up by 10-12mm to get back to center, although it’s distributed between the full turn so doesn’t feel like such an effort. Over the course of a ride, this fatigues the rider slightly, and so KIS aims to reduce this fatigue by storing the energy from the initial turn, and giving it back to the rider when they are returning to center. The effects of wheel flop are perhaps the most detrimental on a climb, where it causes the rider to input more energy to pedal and push the steering back to center, and so the K.I.S. system may reduce the likelihood of stalling out, or simply save energy to be used in propelling the rider forwards.
Another proposed benefit of the system is the feeling of the natural center position of steering that it produces, thanks to the counter-force it adds to the steering that lets your hands feel where the midpoint is. This is only likely to be felt when riding on ultra-loose terrain, but when there’s no traction on the front wheel, being able to feel the position where the wheel is pointing straight ahead could theoretically lead to less likelihood of crashing. In the same vein, Fabien Barel was keen to point out his biggest stand-out phenomenon - the connection between the front and rear wheels. He likened the system to allowing the rider to be able to turn the bike “like a ski”, with the bars helping to keep the rear wheel in-line. In loose terrain this could lead to less chance of the rear wheel oversteering, and potentially give a competitive edge when carving hard.
Certainly, there’s a lot going on with this relatively simple system, so I was very keen to get it out onto the trails and feel it for myself.

No matter how slack was a specialized head angle (from old/new stump, old/new enduro, status) I was always feeling stable, lets say able to steer no hands. On my tyee I am unable even to leave the house when pushing the bike (one hand on saddle). Bars always fell to one side if I am not focused. I might seem crazy as this should be mostly question of head angle but I believe there is some magic behind it. KIS might be a solution. Whats your thaught on this pls. Tnx

Interesting - just yesterday I had a crash on a trail I've ridden hundreds of times. As it's cold I was wearing thick winter gloves and they don't give the same feel or grip as my summer gloves. I think this contributed to the handlebar whipping out of one of my hands when the trail got a bit squiffy. Result - front wheel turned 90 degrees and I went over the bars! I've never had this happen before. Now, I know most people would say grip the bars harder and that probably would have helped but I wonder if something like this would have prevented this?

I don't understand value other than slowing steering during high speeds. Can you do any contrasts? For example: are **track-stands easier or harder** to perform?? and Isnt the real issue: does it help one have **more natural body-english** ? Rake and Trail would need to change to compensate.. right? Is this of greater value on e-bikes? Or is it more of a heavy, slow handling, and DH bike thing?? Also, would you be likely to engage it during the downhills and turn it off on the climbs? I'm really just trying to expand on your final thoughts or summary. p.s. • @TheLoamWolf

Glad you enjoy the channel and thank you for your questions! Theoretically there's the stability improvement for high speed scenarios yes. As well as aiding in reducing the effects of wheel flop and helping to keep the bike upright, which is only notable at low speeds such as when climbing (or trackstanding). And the third main benefit they're suggesting is the connection between front and rear wheels helping to keep each wheel in check in loose terrain. It'll apply equally to eMTB and regular bikes most likely. The climbs are arguably where it's most useful from what I've experienced so far. Yes, if a bike is designed around the system you'll likely see the geometry change to make the best use of it. It'll be interesting to see where this goes. In terms of natural body english...that'll really depend on the rider and how they adapt to it I'd imagine. It blended into the background and didn't really influence the way I was riding the bike, but like I mentioned a few times, it could have done with being more stiffly sprung for me.

@@christiandruan if you only drove a car with zero degrees of caster you would probably think "this is perfect, why would I need a solution to this" but in reality its extremely dangerous and mentally taxing to have to manually steer 100% of the time. If you tried 0-4° caster in a car you'd understand the zero feedback steering feeling, its like driving on ice with no feedback to the tyres grip levels + no automatic counter steer. Once canyon incorporates increasing the steering spring rate as the suspension loads their product will take over the entire market. This is how every 1950s onwards car is designed, its so intuitive to drive that even 5 year olds can drive a car with no practice.

Canyon; pushing the envelope for "semi useful" mtb tech paired with aggressive marketing.

Bicycle innovation seems to mean taking something that already exists, applying it to a mountain bike, then acting like a genius inventor. This is just like dw link, an old technology that should never have received a new patent just because you hung it off a different vehicle.

Ehh, very janky looking. Try to fix handlebars in place and let it roll down a hill and then the same with freely turning bars…

sooo....it really doesn't do ANYTHING, and it's effect is only really noticeable at really low speeds......I'll pass. At high speeds you're not even turning the handlebars..... At high speeds you're not even turning the handlebars.....

Canyon, solving problems that don't exist by adding overly complex proprietary pieces to the inside of your bike that will be expensive and difficult to fix. No one asked for this. No one needs this. How dumb.
