Since the excess fuel is continuously returned to the tank it is like a fuel polishing system so the more you run it and keep cleaning filter the better in might become! Also keep tank full so you are not stirring up fuel in the bottom of the tank by free surface effect of low fuel level.

I am begoinning to think you are correct. Also I think I want the fuel to slop around and clean the tank walls a bit. There is virtually no agitation in a tank that is ket chock full. What I have coming through the system is quite fluid - the consistency of warm driy honey - but black like cat poop. I am full of admiration for nature the way it can set up shop and start reroducing in such a hostile place.

@@KeepTurningLeft If you can set up a small auxillary tank for a while, i would consider putting some steel ball bearings into the tank via the filler, and let that knock more crap out, add some golf balls perhaps? A couple of litres of petrol will thin it out some more also.

My mate had the bug said it looked liked a very stinky Bovril...he threw metal tank away and bought a large plastic tank instead with gauge on top...

Is the tank bonded in? Would be good to pull it and steam clean it. Im sure there are some nasty chemicals that could clean the insides, but where would you put the residue?

the tank, a massive retro fit hard up against the cockpit floor was custom built and can only be removed after the engine and gearbox are out. bit of a problem

I get that in the bottom of my tank every year & because it dos'nt have a drain plug I have to manipulate a bit of fencing wire with a rag attached through the inspection hatch to scour the bottom of the tank.It sticks like you know what to a blanket. I should have a look in your main tank Dylan my guess is that you will be horrified.

sadly there is no inspection hatch who the heck would install a fuel tank with no hatch? I could cut one in the stainless steel tank - but I would need tp cut a hole in the cockpit floor. The mirror offshore had a floor hatch - it always leaked. I am hopeful that eventually it will srtop coming down the pipes. It is fairly free flowing and the water trap catches it before it gets to the filters - so I am not worried
