My lord you can be a grumpy old bugger at times lol. The marvels of the internal combustion engine knows no limits. It's no different to any component on a boat, it wears out faster with lack of proper care. The sea is a harsh environment for everything.

Dylan the problem with these old British mobo sailors Fairways is that there is very little engine room ventilation , easily cured with a good plastic pvc down pipe in to the engine bay up back corner wheel house in to a sexy deck cowl vent. I bet your fumes dissappear add fan if win lottery. Most Dutch motorsailors have fitted those guys know a ting or too ..belive me perhaps a project for later? Now your 60% mobo and repenting ..lol keep up the lovely vids. 👍

I got an email suggesting that I rop the stern hatch open by laying the boat hook across and leaving gthe bog window open to promote an air flow through the boat and out via the engine department. Works a treat

you will learn to love that diesel when its needed........A new boat with a pilot house, Dylan you've come a long way from the slug!😁

I have come a way from the mirror that is true - This has an elderly slug type engine though. Both centaurs had good engines - the second one had an almost brand new beta - I was very sad to sell that boat .

@@KeepTurningLeft diesels are good engines that are hard to kill, just keep changing the oil. the gearbox though that will probably be the one. love the pilot house though. Sailing season is upon us and i am putting my boat in the water this weekend. have a good summer Dylan. enjoy the new boat!

Yes, I remember the old days of the "Slug" an all of the troubles you had with that engine. Good luck with this one.

We had a lovely 1985 Volvo 2003 raw water cooled. When it left our keep in 2016 it still started first time every time. Gearbox cooling is a waste of time, the worms love livjng in there. Just seal it off and put in a bypass intake.

had one of those in Harmony. It was still going beautifully when i sold it, Jon had it for five years and it is still going strong

Oh dear Mr Grumpy today at least the water around the engine not salty but has antifreeze you could swap for petrol but chance blowing boat up with the stray fumes..

I use petrol in the outboard which does at least half of my movement under power. I am slowly winning with the engine installation. I now have a drip tray under the water cooled gearbox

You mentioned fumes or smell how a bilge blower or cheapskate version is Car Radiator from a car breaker with a simple on off switch venti g hot fumes to the outside rather than them seeping into boat ?

thanks for the offer. The oil loss is small... the water loss stops when the salt water intake is closed . I hav e fitted a dri tray to catch the worst of it. The engine is 25 years old... the gearbox is even older. robably goig down the electric route as soon as I have saved u enough prension money.

Yes they are hateful and absorb a large chunk of boat maintenance resources but hang on ... it's a motor sailor yes? I always repeat a mantra "I love working on engines, I love working on engines' and occasionally hit it violently hard with a spanner (if you follow this advice, please wear eye protection, is best).

I have worked on diesels on farms, cars and forklifts - a boat engine is uniquely hard to get at and you have to be anal about tiny leaks.

99% of cruising yachts get on fine with diesel engines Dylan, you are just making yourself sound deranged. You could easily sell that MD, if you don't want it..I had one in my Hurley and it was totally reliable.

@@jerrytugable Mine pumps in sea water circulates it around the engine & then expels it over board.That all looks unnecessarily complicated to me.

it is of little consequence - the water trap caught it all. Clearly the Marine 16 has a fight on its hands - bit shocked the idea of having to put pesticide into fuel. Wrong turning somewhere.
