This was a very informative video to watch and, as always, entertaining, too! Might I suggest a similar video in future with a rundown and rating of the various beverages consumed while the paint dries? I thank you in advance and eagerly anticipate such a video at your earliest convenience.

Couple of watercolor pencil tips: They are very handy for travel, you can sketch in pencil and use a waterbrush to wet.. everything in one little bag except for a sketchbook. You can do your sketch then bring it home and wet later. You can also use a spare piece of paper to make a palette (just scribble some spots of pencil on it) and use them exactly like regular watercolor (my favorite way). You can also use them as regular pencils on top of your wetted work, but be sure to allow the page to try completely first so they don't tear the wet surface. Be aware they may or may not be as lightfast as their paint versions so do some testing if you wish to display your work.

Thanks as ever for all your very informative and knowable comments - all very interesting and useful to everyone who reads the comments - it's very much appreciated from me.
I know this video is from months ago, but I just "discovered" your channel recently! I am so impressed with your videos - the information, the style - and you're just plain fun to watch! I'm new to watercolor painting as of a few months ago.......this video has really been helpful to me. And I am creating a library of your tutorials and will be trying many of them! Thank you so much!
As 79 year old professional illustrator, artist and art educator I must say that was an excellent outline of the watercolour mediums. Excellent. 👍👍👍

Wow, thank you Bob!
I was lucky enough to have had wonderful art instructors. My favorite once told me, "Use the very best tools/equipment (paints/paper) that you can afford at the time." As my buying power increased, so did the quality of my supplies and I am always amazed at my paintings with QOR, Davinci, Daniel Smith, etc. I, too, would not be able to pick just one brand. Now I will have to look up some new toys. Thank you for your amazing videos.
Van Gogh travel set is terrific- great paint. Thanks Paul!

Most helpful. Thanks Paul.
Very helpful!
Personally, I love watercolour pencils and pastels because they're handy and it's easy to make little paintings and details with them. I mostly use Faber-Castell Dürer, but I also have Kohinoor, Caran D'Ache and Lyra. Caran D'Ache was my first pro pencil set. I find normal watercolours to be too messy for painting on the go, so I either sketch and finish it at home, or I bring pencils with me. Draw and paint, and then turn it into watercolours at home. Another use I like about them is that is easy to do very fine details, and to keep colour in one place or line. I hate it when it spreads out in a direction I don't want it to go. I don't use them "instead of" but with the rest of my watercolours, depending on what I want and where I am. As for brands, I don't know 70% of the brands you mention. I'm in Europe with occasional trips to UK, so I'm better acquainted with European or British brands. I love White Nights though they don't have many colours, and I'm still considering buying Sennelier but they're very expensive and I'm sure it's worth it. I do have Sennelier pastels and they're some of the best in my collection. Specially old pastels.

Great video as usual, thank you Paul!. I've only worked with Cotman, Van Gogh and this year started with White Nights. I find White Nights vivid, vibrant and nice to work with, so they are my choice right now. I want to clarify that I'm not an artist, just a crafty person who loves painting with watercolours :)

Thanks for the run-down of what you like and why. I'm a newer painter but M. Graham is just wonderful in my book. My question is about what the different chemicals in paint do. Why quinacridones? Or cadmiums, cobalts, etc. Maybe silly, but this enquiring mind would love to know from an artist's perspective. Thanks!

Pigments are extremely important to understand in watercolor. They ARE the paint, everything else is just binder. Every aspect of that paint.. hue, transparency, granulation, mixing properties.. it's all down to the pigment. Good resources are Jane Blundell and a website called Handprint. Handprint is a bit out of date but the sheer amount of information there is amazing and the vast majority of pigments are quite old so the info is still accurate.

@waymire01

I thought I would go ahead and give the qualities of the pigments you mentioned. Quins are transparent, staining, and vibrant... they are typically pink, red, violet, and orange. Cadmiums and cobalts are toxic (don't put them in your mouth and don't pour rinse water in public drainage), semi/opaque. Cobalts are granulating. Cadmiums are yellow, orange, red... cobalts are blue and green.
Hey Paul I know this video was posted a good while ago but thank you for such great advice. I had a tube of van gogh cobalt blue delivered today and the difference is remarkable. I didn't realise how little I needed on my pallet and got blue everywhere due to being used to scrubbing away at cotman pans for the last couple of years. I bought your book a few days ago too and am steadily working through it. I have to say it was well worth the investment! There was I trying to paint at speed along with your videos and making a mess. I have such a poor memory due to a brain injury that watching first and then painting can't work for me, making your book a brilliant way for me to learn at a snails pace 😀 of course it didn't cross my mind to slow the video down and put the subtitles on (your voice is hilarious slowed down - no offence intended) I think I will be investing in your brushes soon (I've used cheap brushes for years) unless of course I win the big one and could afford kolinsky sable. I did however buy a budget set of princeton brushes and some 100% cotton paper. Again all thanks to your advice. You are so right about getting the best quality one can afford. So after all of my waffling I guess I'm trying to say that thanks to your valuable advice my painting is improving by the day and my drawing too. I cannot thank you enough for all that you give us with your channel it is fantastic 👏
