I absolutely LOVE Jatan’s Blog. It’s a thoroughly researched, extremely well written treasure trove of information for all things Lunar exploration. The amount of effort he puts in each of his post is simply astounding. All the sources are well cited too for anyone to dig even deeper. Thank you so much for bringing his posts to video format! He had other newsletter related to Indian Space Program and some of his personal space musings too which are just as well good. Moon Monday is a delightful part of my Monday routine 😊

I'm Filipino, and yes there is a concerning amount of tension between us, but I speak for all other Filipinos who believe in peace, that this is a success for China, yes, but a success for humanity as a whole.

By the way, Chang'e was an ordinary human being on earth, who then ascended into a goddess living on the moon. Chang'e's back story makes it a fitting name for moonlanders. The Heavenly Palace (Tian Gong) is the place where all gods and goddesses live, which is present in multiple Chinese mythological stories. The Magpie Bridge (Que Qiao) is from another story named The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. It is the story behind Qixi, the Chinese Valentine's Day. It is about the forbidden romance between the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. They got banished to opposite sides of the Heavenly River (essentially the Milky Way). Once a year, on the day of Qixi, a flock of magpies would form the Magpie Bridge to reunite the lovers for a single day. Hence the name for those communication satellites.

Crazy they were able to coordinate the autonomous sample return, rendezvous, and transfer all while only having 1 com sat in range from the far side of the moon. This means they had to wait for a rendezvous with not only the orbiter, but also make sure the relay was overhead the whole time. Wild. Mad respect, hope this kind of method can be used for the mars sample return.

And they are now planning and testing (with 2 little companion sats along with the Queqiao-2 relay sat) a combined lunar satellite constellation for communication, navigation and remote sensing. This is part of the plan for their future moon base.

The China rocket, Long March 5, only can carry 9t to moon orbit. It is why Chinese government choose send a rover rather than astronauts or building a moon base. Compared with space x starship( it can carry 100t to the moon orbit), it is really unbelievable success.

Not really a competition. We've sent more complex rovers to Mars. We've sent actual humans to the moon 60 years ago. China still can't. If they are competing with anyone, it's India.

Not only does it motivate us to DO the space thing, but each "team" plays a bit differently. So, we end up with different strategies, designs, and aesthetics. One nation can't try everything. It would be too messy and confusing for the people working on these projects, and the funding (both monetary and from public support) would be spread too thin to give the punch that space plans need to succeed. If you have competition, our species can get away with trying multiple methods without any cons, and with all the pros. Plus, there's a certain extent of artistic joy that comes with seeing these nations build their spacecraft into different shapes and colors and patterns. I remember seeing the Mars-94 from FAM and thinking wow that shit dope, why didn't we get one of those? Each culture brings their own flare into the scene, and I am HERE for it.

That is such a cool concept to melt the lunar regolith using a magnifying glass into the shape you can use to build something. That's amazing, I hope they can do that because regardless of how strong it will be that would just be cool to start building stuff on other plants.

Yes, China is seriously in gear. But I think SpaceX will be first with the HLS. Now that the launch of starship has been successful twice, HLS can be built and tested. Knowing SpaceX they'll build a few of them with more spares out back. My guess is they'll do an unmanned landing of the HLS before they send a crewed one. China is a long way from a manned moon craft and lander, a few years behind SpaceX although that gap can shrink a lot. Their biggest problem however, is rockets. Do they even have anything remotely capable of launching a manned craft + lander to the moon?

China invented gunpowder, pistol, shotgun, grenade, rocket bombs, cannons, all in 9th and 10th century AD, then 400+ later, Europe copied/stoled and started colonized countries by the invention of Chinese technology. You whits, know that 90% everything that world has has been invented and discovered by non-whites and outside of Europe. I think- I'm not really sure- but I think that the reason the CNSA keeps calling Lunar modules/ missions by the "Chang'e" designation, is that according to folklore/ mythology, Chang'e was the name of some celestial figure or other, who lived in the moon. Thus, the name would make any/ all of the missions immediately understandable to the Chinese people. It would be the same as if Jesus was supposed to live on the moon, instead of 'in the clouds' and if NASA called all their moon-missions a variety of "Jesus 1, Jesus 2, etc..."

Westerners really need to learn basic Chinese pronunciations. For example Chang-e: the “a” in Chang is more of an “ah” sound, and the “e” sounds like “uh.” Ch-ah-ng-uh. And before people say Chinese pronunciations are hard, I don’t want to hear about it because the US has Kansas and Arkansas

I love the co operation from nations around the world. I can only hope that space exploration transcends our differences here on earth. I’m looking at you NASA.

Around 2038 the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), led by the Russians and the Chinese, will be utilized at the lunar south pole. Whether it will be a lunar orbital station and/or a base on the surface of the Moon, or a base made of inflatable modules inside a lunar lava tube, is still an open question.

Just imagine where the space program could be if all the nations got along.

Since Long March-10 has never flown, it would be nice to mention the Starship. That is nearly 10 times the lift capacity of the Long March 10. Starship can carry 250 tons in a non -reusable form, nearly 10 times that of the Long March-10..

There was another video that stated the starship needs to be refueled in earths orbit before it could leave towards the moon. It would take 10 to 15 starship size launches to get the fuel required into orbit. Then there is the problem of restarting the engines to begin the journey to the moon. So there is a lot of parts that need to be solved for starship. In summary. There is a lot of work to be done to man the moon on both sides.

@@carljohnson45 So HLS can take a lot of equipment and people there. 10-15 refuels seems like a lot, but if Starship can be operated much more cheaply than the F9/FH, then it could become quite routine. Also Spacex would need to do most launches over the horizon on floating platforms, otherwise that's too much noise for the local populations.

I'm beginning to wonder if the focus on reusability and size might be working against Space X and NASA. Look at the progress the Chinese are making with more "traditional" moon landing systems. It won't be much good having a huge, reusable rocket if the Chinese run the moon base and they have all the advantages of that

Starship can carry 250 tons to LOW EARTH ORBIT, and LM10 mentioned here is expected to carry 27 tons to EARTH-LUNAR INJECTION ORBIT. LEO lift capability of LM10 is about 70 tons so you can say that expendable Starship will be 3.5 times more powerful than LM10.

In terms of safety, traditional launch vehicles are more reliable.

China will need two launches for every manned Moon mission. NASA will need 15-20, assuming Starship can eventually perform as advertised (doubtful). It's pretty clear how things are going to go..

She ate all the elixir of immortality her hasband found in end of west land, when a men who envy the hero wanted to rob the elixir. Eat half of the elixir for immoetal and all for being god, so Chang-e flght above toward tian-gong (天宫, palace in sky) (←also the name for Chinese space station). She very miss her hasband so she stay on the moon, where she live is called guang-han-gong (广寒宫, vast&cold palace) or chan-gong (蟾宫, toad palace) (ancient Chinese think moon is avatar of a toad). There's also a rabbit called yue-tu (月兔, moon raabbit) (←also the name for Chinese moon rover) and a man forever choping the sweet scented osmanthus tree called wu-gang (吴刚) living there accoding to Chinese myth.

Exactly, in the ancient legend, Chang'e is a woman living on the moon. Every year on Valentine's Day in China, she meets her husband on Queqiao - a bridge (the name of the relay satellite).

Just to mention, since the lunar environment is quite harsh for astronauts to live, how to achieve workforce productivity is huge challenges, maybe we will need new concept of "Taylorism" on the moon… For instance,some hot pepper from South America maybe can become “natural stimulates" for astronauts to work longer hours without damage their health, because maybe some peppers can stimulate human brain,and that's why maybe South American workers can be more"energetic"due to the eating habits…On the contrary, Asian peppers don't have that effect(just for change of tastes)~ Anyway,it's worth to dive into the issues,hmm

The weak economy makes Russia lack the means to counterattack, and can only resort to the lowest level of war violence. If Russia still wants to retain its status as a great power, it should not question the necessity of counterattack. Please note that Putin has tried to ease relations with the West for a long time, but NATO only wants Russia to die, not to accept Russia's surrender. China's sending troops to NK also brought its already fragile domestic economy to the brink of collapse, but not participating in the war would harm the interests of several generations. I've been to China six times, totaling about 9 months, for work. I had a great time and totally enjoyed working with my Chinese colleagues. But I was so happy to return to the US every time. I am way to vocal and opinionated for China.

Problem is that some countries spend years and decades sleeping while China was investing heavily into their own country and now those other countries are shouting " China is a major risk!!! ". there's a law called wolf amendment since late 90's prohibiting ANY space activity with any american government fund to have ANY cooperation with china without a waver from the senate. just give you an idea. if you are a NASA employee, a simple call from chinese space agency to your office phone can NOT be answered if you know the call origin, otherwise, you would be subject to criminal prosecution... lol

@@texan-american200 Chang’e is collaborating with many western nations as you can see from the video, just not with the US for obvious political factors. That said US has recently requested moon soil samples from China, who agreed to share.

It's impressive progress, they are harnessing Al that manufacturing and manpower to great effect. Hopefully one day there will be a free collaboration between China and America, but till then it's only America that's holding itself back. SpaceX are eager to move fast and get them very far, so give them full helpful support and attention, instead of politically fuelled ire. The popular hate of Elon is only allowing the "competition" to get ahead.

I predicted when starship was announced and the plan to colonize the moon and Mars, that China would soon suddenly step up to meet the challenge. It took a few years, but now it's overly evident China is gunning for the moon, and probably in particular Shackleton crater, which also will be NASA's primary target. Shackleton is absolutely loaded with permanently shaded water ice.

Nobody owns any Crater on the moon. And nobody owns the moon either. So if a country lands testing equipment on the moon before another that wanted to but has not. That's just tough luck for that country. 😊

The moon is the ultimate high ground. Whoever controls the moon can control the earth.

Its amazing and sad at the same time ... We ar seeing real progress but also stubbornness between nations. Disappointingly we wont see joint exploration - imagine the things humans could do! Right now we seem to be burning money with SpaceX and when you get way down in the weeds in 2024 the vaunted US still has a decommissioning ISS, giant rockets that burn up but in end can't lift the kgs needed and other nations out shinning NASA. But thankfully we do have innovative smaller companies (see Tenacity) doing great things. Im no expert just a normal Joe looking on at space exploration with awe and the hopes I will see man living on moon in my lifetime.😊

@@thefleecer3673 Honestly the development of truly reusable launch vehicles is by far SpaceX's most impressive achievement, which is why China is going to do it also (and are making great strides in doing so). It just makes sense. Imagine how expensive airline flights would be if they threw away the entire airplane after every flight. The same is true for spaceflight, but even moreso and with a much higher dollar amount. Just play Kerbal Space Program and do it yourself, developing a fully recoverable reusable launch vehicle is basically a "never run out of money ever again" cheat code. But also I do think we should be working with China in exploring space. We should all be communists with a beautiful international glorious communist space program. Competition is not the only way, in fact I believe it's the wrong way. Cooperation will always get us farther than competition ever will, because competition requires losers and only has one winner, whereas cooperation is the mutual pursuit of a win for everyone.
