I set out to prove allot of the information that has been regurgitated about how to catch alligator gar over the last 40 years is outdated information bordering on out right lies.
I use a penny sized 1/0 j hook instead of the industry standard 4/0 treble hook
I also set the hook in the first 30 seconds of the run unlike the industry standard of waiting 15-20 minutes to set the hook purposefully gut hooking the gator gar we catch
There are allot of people claiming to be experts in this field (maybe myself included) who actually aren't acting how experts in a field or masters of a craft actually act.
As a master or expert in a craft your work should be peer reviewed, you should also be passing on the knowledge you have attained so its not lost for the next generations. the last mark of a master of a craft is a person who is never satisfied with their work, someone who constantly pushes the envelope to advance their craft.
I propose everything told about how to catch alligator gar is an outdated lie and we need to be open to new methods and concepts that cause little to no harm to this very species fish species.

Nice video and catch!! I caught a smaller Gar this morning using chicken heart and yes, on a single hook (not treble hook). First gar I ever caught!!! Was so great fighting it and reeling it in even though it was only 22".
Me and my buddy were talking alligator gar last night and what you described is exactly what he said letting the fish eat and gut hooking. But I definitely wouldn't wanna gut hook these guys. Thx for the info!

Just came across your channel. I love alligator gar. Though hicks in my state have given the fish the reputation of it has to be killed. I love alligator gar. Only ever seen one but never caught one.
I use a 3/0 live bait hook on a 120lb nylon coated leader double crimped and works great

Great info! Always better that a fish survives the encounter than be caught just to suffer or die later. Its fishing…sometimes the fish wins and throws the hook! Better than no action in my book.

uni knot or snell knot
I have a bunch of big gar around me. I use like 4 to 6 inch gizzard shad and they always drop it or I can't set the hook no matter how long I let it run

Hell i just give a reel or two and they hook themselves single hook my self twenty lb line splder wire always.
