There's a nice detail with the gem's weapon upgrades, after this episode. The very first shot of the next episode shows Amethyst still wielding the flail that Bismuth upgraded from her whip, which makes sense: she is currently feeling inadequate due to her loss against Jasper in Crack The Whip, so of course she's going to commit to using an obvious boost in attack power when she sees it. However, Garnet and Pearl aren't actually seen using their spiky gauntlets or the trident until Reunited, when Bismuth is reformed and complications are settled between them. Garnet and Pearl likely stopped using these weapon upgrades after this incident, probably due to learning of Bismuth's true intentions of wanting to shatter gems, while Amethyst only knew of Bismuth's existence for less than a day, so she was hit much less hard by the revelation, and continued to use her flail. Hey, if she created a weapon that was able to shatter gems, it's not too much of a stretch to suggest the weapon upgrades given to the gems may have been able to do further damage than simply proofing gems. Maybe I'm just overthinking here, but it's a really nice detail, especially with them finally using Bismuth's upgrades again, in Reunited, since tensions have settled between them.

I think part of why Bismuth isn't more skeptical about how she was poofed during the battle of the ziggurat is because she didn't know Rose was the one who poofed her. It probably wasn't an instant thing during their argument when talking about The Breaking Point, she probably waited for an opportunity to get rid of her during the battle and kept her hidden until she could store her away somewhere safe, like Lion's mane. As far as Bismuth knows, she DID get lost and poofed during the battle of the ziggurat. That's what I always thought, personally.

16:07 Something that could justify it is the fact that Bismuth’s body is far heftier than the rest of crystal gems’. It’s likely also much more durable than the others’, as lava does not harm her. Granted, it doesn’t harm Garnet either, but it could be argued that she was poofed much more quickly than Bismuth because, in both instances shown in the show, she was hit with a force made specifically to destroy a gem’s form (being Jasper’s destabilizer and Yellow Diamond’s powers), while Bismuth was merely stabbed with an ordinary weapon.

9:53 I think what Bismuth meant here was that the sword was more suited in stabbing and slicing a bigger target like a gem's body, but not necessarily practical at attacking the gem directly. The piston weapon ("The Breaking Point"), on the other hand, is kind of like a close-range gun. It attacks only a single point, but is extremely powerful at doing so. 10:36 Also, I think the piston was just delayed in her demonstrating it because of dramatic effect

I do want to say for the Breaking Point, they definitely made it sound like it would be a common weapon used during battle, but I don't think it would have been used that way, more if they captured an enemy gem or there were stragglers or already poofed gems, they would then aim it when they couldn't do anything and then shatter them. At least that's the way I would see them EFFECTIVELY using it rather than flat out using it for battle.

For sin 7, I actually think when Bismuth said "Nobody is more crystal gem than I am" I actually think that fits her character considering Bismuth has more passionate about winning wars and fights compare to the rest of the crystal gems, which shows that at the end of the episode and for sin 6 I pretty sure that the breaking point can hit any gem regardless of it's sizes or how hard it is, if you hit it at close range, but some people didn't like the episode due to what happen to Bismuth and the racial component, which Lily & Mikaila Orchard made a video on. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKCAp9SYo7ypXc4.html I think this episode was a pretty cool episode, but the problems that I have with this episode is the fact that no one unbubble Bismuth to talk to her, we literally had to wait for season 5 to get Bismuth back because at the end of the day you would think anyone would agree that shattering gems in self-defense would be allowed to happen, but this episode shows no matter what, shattering gems is too taboo for the crystal gems, whcih if you ask me is pretty bullshit considering that shattered gems is not dead, just their gems are into shards that can still reform.

On the topic of the dilemma between Bismuth & Steven, I'm on Bismuth's side here. When they went to war, the Crystal Gems didn't use much aggression like Bismuth wanted & while the Breaking Point is a bit much, be in her shoes for a second. You're in a war with the Diamonds, and their whole ideology is of a dictatorship & keeping everything the same with Gems having a specific role & them as their Supreme rulers. They are ruthless & hold nothing back, case in point with the corruption beam they blasted on Earth. You cannot be passive in a war unless there's a way for peace

The early Crystal Gems were outnumbered, and their leader already had the reputation of being a traitorous regicide. The only hope of eventual success in the rebellion was gaining recruits--lots of them--a task that would have been practically impossible if the average Gem grunt thought that Rose Quartz was a psychotic who murdered helpless poofed Gems, which was the only viable way of using the Breaking Point.

The thousand years apparently include the time, perhaps several centuries (as reported by Blue Zircon) of the shadow war Pink Diamond conducted as "Rose Quartz"; according to Peridot The Cluster and the force-fusion experiments began "halfway" through the war, when the Diamonds abandoned hope of defeating the Crystal Gems and completing the colonization of Earth, and these projects lasted for a few hundred years prior to the final Homeworld evacuation of Earth and the unleashing of the Corruption Nuke. I remember always being really bothered by the timing of this episode when it first came out, but now with the benefit of hindsight it kinda makes sense. For context, the episodes immediately before this are Crack the Whip and Steven vs Amethyst: we're right in the middle of an arc between steven and amethyst, and even more importantly Jasper is still out there as an immediate threat, and yet neither of these thing are mentioned or even hinted at during the episode. Then after is Beta where this arc immediately picks back up and reaches its conclusion, and Bismuth doesn't get to come back for two whole seasons, nor is she even mentioned until like 8 episodes later. It's like the episode exists in a time bubble completely separated from the events around it except for the fact that Amethyst uses her weapon upgrade against Jasper. But then later on I realized why it almost had to be that way. Bismuth had to be absent because she had information no other gems did; she knew that Rose would never shatter another gem, and she knew that Rose was physically incapable of doing so with her sword (somehow). If she had stayed around long enough to learn about corrupted gems, she would've had to be clued in on the how they got corrupted by a diamond attack, and she'd have to be told that they attacked in the aftermath of Pink diamond being shattered by Rose. She would know for a fact that this couldn't possibly be true, and unlike Steven she probably wouldn't rest until she got to the bottom of this mystery, questioning both Garnet and Pearl for answers that they can't keep from her. And if Bismuth was introduced even an single episode later, then _Steven would have known_ that Rose shattered Pink Diamond during this. Instead of a fight with Bismuth where they repeat the past, he'd question out loud why Rose would say that but shatter someone anyway, and you have the same problem where Bismuth now has every piece of the puzzle needed to uncover the truth. Only after this whole mystery is resolved does Bismuth actually come back in the show, which made me realize that this episode is placed where it is because it's literally the last possible moment they can introduce Bismuth. Any later and they just completely destroy the entire story they were planning to tell with Pink Diamond, because Bismuth could've unraveled all of it on her own.

  • @Theoriginalmistwalker

on the Bismuth literally having all the pieces of the puzzle, i mean when she does come back she literally says that it all makes sense, and that rose ended up taking her advice, i also think that this episode being right before the fight with jasper kinda of has the purpose to set pearl and garnet aside a little since they probable have to deal with their feelings about the events of the episode, and thats why we see steven and amethyst be on their own for the few episodes Before and after this one, so that we dont question Why steven and amy decided to fight jasper alone (with peridot's help ig)

Before the twist, you watch this episode under the assumption that Rose didn’t like the idea of the Breaking Point because of the moral implications. But with the twist in mind, you realize that Rose didn’t want a weapon that can shatter diamonds to exist because she *is* a diamond, and it really weakens the strength of her character as a result.

There are some things i wanna state that hopefully make sense Bismuth freaking out and then asking about Rose later to me makes sense She was in a completely different environment, made her way into a newer environment where her old allies were and had them rushing towards her crying and laughing, so many things happened all at once for Bismith to process in one moment so having her get her shot together and be like "hol up, lemme figure out whats happening here before i ask about rose" and then she sees pearl and garnet and becomes overwhelmed with joy and catches up with them, its only when they mention rose where bismuth immediately asks where she is Also I want to point out that Rose bubbled Bismuth for a reason After finding out that one of your alliance forms a weapon made to destroy you (even if they didnt know) it would make sense for you to refuse the offer, besides Rose's weapon reminds us that Rose never shattered gems So a weapon made to not only shatter gems, but you as well will of course make you ancy And what I can tell from bismuth's dialogue, is that she probably tried to fight Rose aswell Remember she said "I didnt want to have to fight you, *but you left me no choice* " tells that Bismuth charged at Rose as well And she poofed her in self defense like what steven did And a reason why she didn't tell the crystal gems could be because she didn't want to tell them that their friend tried to kill her or shattered gems which is something rose would do And even after finding out the truth and what Bismuth did, the gems *Still* 👏 *Kept* 👏 *Her* 👏 *Bubbled* 👏 I'm not saying any of this is right, I'm just saying that all of these actions had reasons behind them

I love this episode, it adds the action that steven universe was sort of missing. In crack the whip, thats one of the only real impactful fight scenes we've ever scene that made a sort of difference with amethyst sort of seeing herself as not as useful as she portrays in later seasons. Not to mention the gem weapon addons, they're awesome. It sucks that their not used as often though. This episode really made me enjoy steven universe alot more than i did before, Bismuth is a great character, she had it all with backstory, design, personality and genuinely one of the best plot twists to rose. I really love this episode.

Honestly, when I watch this episode, I just think to how Steven got real hypocritical on this in Future when his personal emotions were involved when he met up with White Diamond. Didn't worry about shattering then. Or with Jasper.

  • @Theoriginalmistwalker

    @Theoriginalmistwalker

    Жыл бұрын

i mean not really? he literally feels sorry instantly about jasper and is thankfully able to fix his mistake and runs away scared after the thing with white diamond, because he realizes that he realisticly Isnt a 100% good person and that there is a part of him that wants some form of phyisical revenge against the diamonds, even if his morals go against it, probably one of the things he goes to therapy for is to learn how to deal with people who in some way hurt him without forgiving but also without hurting the other person (since i doubt he ever actually forgave the diamonds even after future), i dont feel steven was out of chracter in future, in fact i feel like his decent into being a monster is a predictable outcome of living all the stuff he did at age 14 and thankfully he was able to deal with this phase of his life and reclaim his person, at the end of future we see him be much more like he always was

@@Theoriginalmistwalker mhmmm… yeah. Good thing the show made a point of telling us what a big deal shattering was, to the point of it being the reason Bismuth was bubbled and why the Diamonds used the corrupting light… only for it now not being a big deal in Future because Steven can resurrect shattered Gems. Heck, we’re shown Yellow can reconstruct then too, so there was no point to that silly eternal war ha ha…ugh. If they always could do that…the show was a waste of our time. See, Steven’s always able to fix his mistakes. Even when he really shouldn’t be able to, and maybe he’d learn if he actually had to deal with the consequences of his actions instead of already either being able to fix it or running away. Wow, he really is Pink. And oh joy, Future… they spent all that time showing us Steven decent into madness… to basically fix it with a hug and everyone blaming themselves in an almost comical manner. Oh, and then apparently he gets help off screen and seemed fixed in 30 seconds. We don’t even get to know how he worked through it. Just got to watch the trauma porn and get no payoff. He’s “fine” now! Ugh… the savior is back to how he was, now he’s going cross country… because as you saw in Future, he’s so good at dealing with human problems.

I feel like it’s weird to be but I feel like Bismuth is a prequel character. A character who probably had so many adventures and battles that we will never see though instead of being in a prequel, it is in the actual show though like a prequel sometimes, we won’t see her again until a lot of years later or something

Rewatching Steven Universe has made me and my partner, who is watching the show for the first time question something I never noticed before. Bismuth says that Rose's sword was designed to destroy a gems physical form but never the gem itself. I can understand Pink keeping this from everyone but Pearl as it probably would have broken the illusion that she's really gone, but in the episode The Trial Steven even brings up the breaking point as a possibility for how Pink Diamonds shattering occurs, to Blue Diamond angrily interjecting that it was a sword that shattered her. It's never explicily stated that it was Roses sword that was used specifically but Steven isn't an idiot and it seems logical that he would have put two and two together and assumed was Roses sword that Blue Diamond was referring to. It seems a little weird that Steven completely overlooked this detail and never really seems to question it and Steven never brings it up to any of the Crystal Gems either.

With this entire thing he goes on about with arguing about Bismuth being stabbed by rose and she just seems to accept it, but I’d argue that after the interaction with Rose may have been traumatic for her and she blocked the memory, until Steven telling her that it isn’t right brought the memories of Rose stabbing her back, cause bismuth asks Steven (thinking he is rose) what happened to her and if rose knew and why rose lied to everyone.

It may have not been the intention, but when I first saw this episode I thought the lesson being told was that sometimes your enemies are not in front of you, but rather beside you. Rose Quartz's first and foremost goal was preserving the Earth from sterilization by Gem colonial development. She may have been sympathetic to the idea of Gem social reform, but to her that wasn't the reason for her rebellion. Bismuth, on the other hand, apparently became a Crystal Gem based on a passionate desire to change Gem society, not just on Earth, but for Gems everywhere. Unfortunately, her cheerful exterior disguised deep mistrust, even hatred for those she considered to be "uppercrusts" like the Diamonds and those Gems species immediately below the Diamonds. To me, she was ironically mirroring the behavior of the Diamonds but from the opposite direction. Just as "uppercrust" Gems typically despise Gems of so-called inferior classes, Bismuth could find no good from the "uppercrusts" and seemingly was determined to begin a war of the knife against them and their adherents, which would have at the least complicated Rose/Pink's ability to achieve her goals. If the Breaking Point had the ability for mass destruction like the Corruption Nuke, then Bismuth might have had a least a modicum of justification for her insubordination to Rose Quartz; but as presented the Breaking Point was merely an instrument of murder less effective than the usual Gem weapons that didn't necessarily shatter their targets.
