I think at first, in this scenario he didn't understand much about human emotions besides his own bcs of how much he was with the gems who, allegedly but we know it's not the truth, don't feel the same way as humans in some aspects of life. But in SU Future i think it's honestly just his anxiety because people were able to move on so easily while In his head it's already difficult enough to try and comprehend everything that happened in his life in a, may I remind you, 2-3 year span and now having nothing else to do except to think about EVERYTHING that happened in that timeframe, and the idea (that he probably built unconsciously) that he's still EXPECTED to be that little angel savior. And honestly not that many people help dismantle that idea, even if they don't really need to, it kinda pisses me off how they just think steven's cool with almost being killed by galactic war Tyrants more than once because of what his mom did.
@html.g0ld3n27
Жыл бұрын
Heck, even at the time when he found out his mom was pink diamond, he instantly gets shoved on someone else's problems. I get that sapphire believed in rose a lot and she SHOULD be devastaded, but doesn't seem like she even thought about how steven (considering the situation, the one that gets DIRECTLY affected by his mother's decisions) was feeling at all. He bottled up everything just to go and help ruby and sapphire to reconnect. I'm not defending that attitude of his because of them not being in love anymore, but I think it was just more of a "They all moved on so easily, why can't I? I've been there for them in their hardest times, why can't they be with me when it's my turn to feel bad?" kind of thing
I think this episode would have worked better in season 1 as back then he could barely use his powers and he was super sheltered at the time he didn't even have a true human friend besides connie so it would make sense for steven to be oblivious in season 1 but by season 3 I do agree that steven has helped so many people and should be more receptive to people feelings I mean he literally connected to the cluster a hive mind of thousands of gems so I do agree with you that having this episode after all of that is jarring.

I was mostly enjoying the episode but overall it left a bad taste and my mouth that I couldn't explain. I felt that steven was right in trying to force Lars with Sadie. But even so, the episode felt uncomfortable. So my sister explained to about 10-year-old me that not dating someone isn't a problem. And I was like, yeah, that tracks. It didn't click for me so we found somewhere to watch the episode again. And we did. And I was wholly disgusted. I, a 10-year-old, hated the entire episode, forever. My feeble 10-year-old brain couldn't fully grasp why I hated it so much aside from the reason my sister gave me. *COUGH COUGH* FUTURE
Let me just rewrite this episode to actually make this shit decent, at least. Steven is telling the story of how he and Peridot bubbled the Cluster to Lars and Sadie. Sadie is impressed, but Lars, going through a bit of an emotional slump recently, doesn't really react. Steven takes notice, and asks what's wrong, and Lars blurts out that he doesn't need to be reminded that this random kid somehow saved the world in a few hours, while all he did was sit in front a desk, handing donuts to people. None of this shit is related to Sadie, it's simply Lars felling inferior to Steven. At night, just about the same thing happens like it did in the actual episode, however, both parties wake up with their brains swapped, and the two meet up. Lars demands to switch them back now, but Steven says he doesn't quite know how, presuming he can only switch them back when he's sleeping. Before he can, however, the gems tell Steven he needs to go on a mission. Steven tells Lars this is exactly what he wanted: a bit more excitement, a chance to be remembered, with Steven covering for Lars. Lars reluctantly agrees, and he heads to the temple to go on a mission. What then follows is mostly comedic, switching back between Steven in Lars' body working at the Big Donut (maybe learning a bit more about him from Sadie in PLATONIC conversations during their break), and Lars in Steven's body going on a mission with the gems, providing his own special talents that Steven doesn't have, having some comedic moments with gems, wondering why Steven is being so sarcastic and pessimistic, today. In the end, both parties are very tired at the end of the day, and Steven and Lars fall back sleep and their minds revert to normal. The next day, Steven thanks Lars for the experience, to his surprise. He tells Lars that what he does may not be as extravagant as Steven's job of protecting the Earth, but he still brings people smiles by serving donuts to them, and, to top it off, he actually earns money for his hard work, unlike Steven. Lars chuckles as Steven places an order and hands it to him. As Steven munches on his double chocolate cinnamon twist with sprinkles on the side, Lars notices the large grin on his face. He rolls his eyes at the boy and says "Yeah, I got the message, Steven." as he giggles and leaves, but a smile begins to form on Lars' face, as the episode ends. It's very common to feel inferior to people who seemingly have more important jobs than you do, so I think an episode like this is a much better way to show off Steven body-swapping abilities, as well as just have another episodic Crystal g Gem mission

This is still the only episode of the show I couldn't bring myself to finish. It was just so uncomfortable and all the bullying towards Lars felt really uncalled for.
The fact that Crewniverse could've rewrote this episode to be almost Mr. Greg but instead of it being about how Greg and Pearl have to move on from Rose, it would be about how even though Lars can be a jerk at times, he does have a soft side for Sadie, but has a hard time expressing his feelings due to him being rude to Steven around Sadie at times, to the point that it's hard for Lars to say that he genuinely like Sadie without it sounding like he was joking about it. If I was writing this episode, I would make it seem like Steven knows that Lars has a soft spot for Sadie, and instead of transferring his mind to Lars' body, he would basically arrange some sort of “date” for Lars and Sadie to get to know each other that they didn't know about. Then again, this is Crewniverse, so-
It's funny how Lars's episodes usually turn out terrible not because of Lars, but because of the other characters actions. Lars is actually the one who is the most sympathetic in these stories, despite the writers clearly wanting us to root against him.
3:14 yes, but not Steven, Rebecca was the one who was really distressed about her ocs not hooking up together. Instead of having Steven try to give Lars a redemption arch/ some advice lmao.

My take in Steven's character is that (almost) all the time, whenever he helps someone, is like he's teaching them how to ride a bike, THEY are the one with completely control over it, while Steven JUST holds the handle, so whenever they're ready he can let them go IN THIS EPISODE, Steven JUMPS on the bike in the most OBJECTIVE. WAY. POSSIBLE.
I think a lot of this is missing greater context; Lars DOES pretend o be a different person than he actually is; he acts like a disconnected, holier-than-thou jerk that wants to be superior to everyone and hides everything about himself in some misguided effort to be 'cool.' You get a greater context from this in his character arc on the whole, like how he loves baking, goofy things and is a nice guy; but he believes people would look down on him and is embarrassed about how he really is. Lars seeing how Steven acting like Steven was more well received them him acting like a disconnected jerk and lusting after 'cool cred.' He starts to behave like his actual self more, and not try to chase this image of what a 'cool kid' is actually like. Moral implications aside, I think Lars needed a harsh wake-up call. I've been in his situation before, and it took a rude awakening to make me realize I was doomed to end up alone if I kept behaving the way I did. For most people, that rude awakening is ending up ostracized from everyone, not a wakeup call that people will like you for who you are, and you don't need to create a 'cool' persona.

I agree with you. Lars was a self-destructing jerk that needed a wake up call. @@DragonGoddess18 They do when the right results are achieved. Lars was in for a rude awakening one day; his parents getting fed up with him, Sadie and others ostracizing him and probably ending up with no one and nothing. That's a far worse fate than having someone accidentally control your body for a day. It's not the intentions that matter here, it's the result. Even then, Lars still can't get over himself and wants to keep acting what he believes is cool. Remember, he trashed his cake and ran away because of his self loathing. It took him being stranded in space to finally adjust his attitude and stop being an ass.
It’s weird cause they do this again in Future when Shep is introduced.

I don’t think Steven forcing a relationship between Lars and Sadie is done out of selfishness or because he wants his ship to be canon. I think Steven genuinely thinks that Lars and Sadie being together is genuinely going to make their lives better. Let me explain: In “Island Adventure”, Steven, Lars and Sadie get trapped on an island together. Over the course of the episode, Lars slowly goes from his usual jerk personality into a genuinely kind and caring individual, able to understand Sadie and actually be sincere with her for once, which culminates in a kiss. Now I know that the last few minutes of the episode significantly halts that development by revealing Sadie hid the warp pad and is the reason they’re “stranded” on the island to begin with. But let’s go back to that kiss: Steven watched it, he was there, he saw it. My personal takeaway is that Steven, ever since this episode, has had the idea that if Lars were to finally confess his love to Sadie, his personality would also change back to what it was in “Island Adventure”: able to have fun, to laugh with people, especially with Sadie. In his mind, Lars confessing to Sadie could only be a good thing, it would significantly improve his mood and allow him to finally be nicer to people, like he was in the song during “Island Adventure”. Of course, Steven doesn’t realize it isn’t as simple as that: he’s only ever wanted to bring out the good in people after all (as shown with him being nice to Peridot throughout most of Season 2 even before her redemption arc), at least until this episode. He doesn’t think about how complicated this might make Lars’s life, he just genuinely believes he’s doing the right thing. In my opinion, Steven’s character wasn’t really botched in this episode, on the contrary. It was just another (pretty badly executed tbf) attempt to show that Steven wants to make everyone’s lives better but sometimes doesn’t respect the boundaries of the people he wants to help. Also this why Steven tells himself that Lars is a jerk because he won’t tell Sadie he loves her: he thinks that Lars will actually, literally, stop being a jerk, if he confesses, which is why Steven acts the way that he does in the episode. However I do agree with some of your points, like the fact that Lars is treated like garbage this episode and is also seen as a way worse person than he actually is. But I don’t think Steven was acting OOC. And I kinda like the ending where Lars realizes that Steven made people feel so much better around him than the usual Lars did, and decides to use this admittedly traumatizing experience to improve. Probably. Status quo is god so he probably goes back to being a jerk in the next episodes lmao Of course this is just my own personal take on this episode. I don’t really know if this is the thing the Crewniverse were going with when they wrote it, but I choose to believe it. I also don’t know if anyone will ever read this but I personally liked writing it. (Also there are probably holes in my reasoning but I’m too lazy to care so whatever) TL;DR for the “I ain’t readin allat” people: I think Steven is in the wrong throughout the episode HOWEVER his actions did not come from selfishness but a genuine desire to improve Lars’s life, because he remembers the events of “Island Adventure” and saw how Lars was able to become much nicer by just having fun with Sadie and Steven.
Seems like this episode may have somehow triggered a deep-rooted trauma or issue for you. I know this episode isn't the best but I've never seen such a visceral hatred or intense reaction to it. Same with Keystone Motel for me.

Yeah this episode is a pretty big example of character assassination and inconsistency throughout the show. They tried to correct this whole plot in Steven Universe Future but that's way too late. This episode shouldn't have gotten past storyboards
Wierdly enough I think this episode is so funny just by the sheer absurdity of it all
Imagine just out of nowhere he gives us episode 50 more sins at the end
I know some are saying this would work in season one but I still don't think this would even work in season one because it just doesn't feel right in any way.
Funnily enough, back when I was watching SU for the first time, when I got to this episode and saw the body swap, I immediately stopped watching as I felt it would be awful… Apparently I have future vision
Randomly clicked on this video in my recommendations and was not disappointed, new sub
this is the only steven universe episode i haven’t watched because i had to stop about a minute in, i couldn’t take it
Okay I’m curious is there any episodes you hate more than this or is this just the one
Oh dang i didn't know you came.back
i skipped almost this entire episode when i was watching steven universe, i only watched the part where steven was himself and the end
man i despise this episode. watched it twice and i will never watch it again. it makes me cringe for 11 minutes straight
You know ,i think steven is not acting out of character because he absolutely doesn't understand the concept of consent when it comes to love ,we see that this issue still continues up until the end of the show ,sure his bond with his earth family is good but when it comes to strangers he absolutely fumbles, this is the only thing that the writers didn't even try to fix about his character ,will i think that makes him more like the diamonds don't ya think?(doesn't excuse this ep though)
11:58 Not sure why, but this comment here, can’t help but relate to it xD
Are we not gonna talk about how he hated this one the most but didnt put as many sins as full disclosure-
11:25 I noticed you missed an animation error. Lars’s arm disappears for a frame
Sadie thinks that Lars is her friend when it’s convenient for him, when it wasn’t true, Lars should have been yelling at Sadie for the exact same thing she did to Lars, everyone in Beach city is a bully.
missed one, the frame on 11:25, lars' arm is just gone
The way Steven treats Lars and Sadie not being together makes me genuinely surprised he _isn’t_ homophobic
Please don't lose insanity
I hated this episode so much, that this video is the first time I'm seeing a majority of these scenes.
I love how ironic it is that Supersonic is talking about a creepy topic while also have been doing some very VERY questionable creepy things to underaged kids

@@goldyjh Looked it up when I saw this comment and I am very disgusted.
maybe the worthlessness and replaceability of our existence was the friends we made along the way
As much as I hate this episode, "who's Laramie" is one of my favorite jokes in the entire show
Lars and Sadie's "relationship" is brought up in Steven Universe Future, and Steven was not happy about them not being together, who fun.
maybe it would be more entretaining if this was the plot for a fanboy and chumcum episode
not enough sins
