Everything Wrong With Amazon's Making the Cut Ep 1 (it's gonna be a long season)

Amazon Prime has debuted it's new show "Making the Cut" which is being hosted by former Project runway cohosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. The show is interesting as it's been launched just a bit behind Netflix, another streaming giant, and their "Next in Fashion" as well as Bravo's re-takeover of Project Runway. So now instead of one good fashion design competition show, there are three lackluster ones. Making the Cut has an eclectic group of both celebrity and fashion industry judges some being Nicole Richie, Carine Roitfeld, Joseph Altuzarra, and of course the legendary Naomi Campbell. The show has about 12-13 designers competing showing multiple looks an episode and honestly, it's kind of a mess.

The setup of this sounded way better than Netflix' "Net in Fashion" but the designs were SOOO BAD. Truly, I'm utterly dissappointed. 90% was boring and looked badly made. I only enjoyed Sabato and Ji Won. It's not even a matter of taste, it just looked handmade and cheap whereas the Netflix designers gave us creative and beautiful outfits (love the winning designer btw). How do you find designers that sound so good on paper and then have them be so disappointing? That's amazing.

All that budget thrown on locations and sets and nothing on a good format. Like the judges themselves don't even know wtf the concepts of the looks are???? Did the producers spend 5 minutes thinking about this whole show???? This show is emblematic of everything that is wrong with Amazon and fast fashion. God awful fabric, god awful designs. No acknowledgement of seamstresses ONCE during the show. We don't even get to see their face. Amazon fashion (and fast fashion) is made by seamstresses in third world countries with no name, no identity, hardly any wages and long working hours. Good god this show is so god awful. Putting aside the sustainability and labour issues Amazon is the epitome of, a designer's interaction and work dynamic with their team is literally one of the most important aspects of their work and execution. This isn't even cringe, it's so sad.

However, after seeing how poor the quality of the garments are that Amazon chose to reproduce, I think Ji Won and Sander perhaps dodged a bullet by not having to translate their brands into a polyester mess. Ji Won could have amazing success continuing on with Adidas, I could see every Instagram influencer wanting to wear her brand. Sander also has the potential to build one the next hot fashion houses of the future. I loved every piece he made and I think his brand deserves way better than Amazon anyway.

I think there's a behind the scene judging aspect focused on how easily the pieces can be produced and profit margins and what people will buy etc. In other words, I think the show itself has the unfortunate probability of being strangled artistically because of behind the scenes profit margins pushed by amazon.

Just finished episode 6, and Sander is my favourite 💕 I really like the way the show is planned, compared to Next in Fashion (although I like both shows!). I feel like Making the Cut has so many elements to it that show more facets to the fashion world (like seamstresses), and make it open to not just designers but creative directors as well. And by having the seamstresses the contestants aren’t as stressed, we get to see more complete looks, and contestants aren’t penalized for their sewing abilities on a design show. Although, I kinda wish we had the designers from Next in Fashion on this show instead of the designers we got. I think the Next in Fashion designers probably would have had more drive then what we’re seeing (other then a few of the better designers on Making the Cut, like Ester, Ji Won, and Sander). And I think the budget + seamstresses would have let Angelo from Next in Fashion thrive, instead of being eliminated because of his sewing abilities. Also I love the big budget! We get to go to Paris, have Naomi Campbell as a judge, and have better sets for shows then Next in Fashion. I think Making the Cut has higher stakes, but I don’t think that a lot of the designers are deserving of the opportunity? Anyways love both shows, and I’m happy we’re getting two fashion shows with people who have actual experience in the industry!

Megan had some really sophisticated and creative designs. And Sander with a really artistic flair. I'm sad they didn't make it to the finals because I think they deserved it. Amazon in the end cares about profit and not about creativity. While I am happy for the two finalists, I feel like there were much better designers. The finalists were too bland and generic and frankly, that type of fashion is so common nowadays it doesn't stand out -also just a side rant to defend Megan's black suit in the episode she left. Having a preference for all black clothing and using all black clothing are two different things. She created an all black suit that fitted her style, but the judges (most anyways) were too focused on rhe "all black" the other designer doesnt own the "all black" look just because it is her preference

I've just watched season 2. It's slightly better than season 1, but it was too short. The problem with this show is the selection of designers. Most of the designers are either too commercial or they are not highly skilled enough for the show. The only one that stood out to me was Gary. He is the definition of what fashion is really about. He's unique, artistic and made the most interesting garments. They should have chosen more designers like him, then the competition would have been tougher. This show tells you that its a fashion design competition, yet It's more concerned about business and marketing ability than fashion design itself and simply what you can put on amazon. I also didn't like the choice of judges. Jeremy Scott was the only one with the valid opinions. All heidi and winnie Harlow talked about is what they would or would not wear. These two think commercially (plus they're models so.. )and Jeremy thinks design-wise. They should have included another judge who's a designer/works in a fashion magazine , then the judgements would have been fairer. In the end, project runway is the best fashion design competition.

you killed me with the magpie Martha nickname, and yeah she shouldn't even be on the show, her "designs" were awful. Esther's looks were so boring no clue why it won. Jiwon was def my favorite, I could kinda see her runway look working if she inverted the colors or kept to the black and white. But yeah the designers made some boring as looks, maybe they were asked to do that? Considering that they want to sell them on Amazon maybe it was a "it can only use x yards of fabric" or "only so many pattern pieces"?

I think you would enjoy doing a full series on Next in Fashion more than Making the Cut. NIF has its issues with judging standards and consistency but the designers and the garments they create the entire series were far, far better and more enjoyable to see come to life. Kinda seems like Netflix did their casting before Amazon and booked up all the best designers because the difference in talent level between the two shows is crazy.

(Edit. I have watched the entire season. No spoilers here. Just my overall opinion). The music is too much. I can barely hear the dialog, the music doesn't match the mood, the disconnect between Tim and the judges is weird. He looks uncomfortable. Heidi needs to step up her own personal style. It was not great on Project Runway but on this show its looks cheap. The designers are not world class. This confuses me because some of them have been in the business for over 15 years. Why not have this show present new and emerging designers? I am disappointed in this project. If it is a vehicle for Amazon to show off their cheaply made brands, then it serves its purpose.
