I Love Emily in Paris but HATE Her Style (Part 1)

Emily in Paris is one of the shows that most definitely will be remembered from 2020. The Netflix show featuring Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, who happens to end up in Paris, France working at a PR Firm and finding her way through the city. It has been met with harsh criticism for its stereotypes of both Americans and the French, which I must agree with but I personally can't stand the clothing choices. Many creators have discussed how the show is so unrealistic for so many reasons, but most haven't touched on how the wardrobe of Emily is so deranged, as she has close to $60,000 in Chanel pieces from bags, to clothes, to accessories, and I have met very few young people with that kind of clothing budget. The styling of the show is also quite hideous, which is sad cause the show is obviously trying to be aspirational, not realistic. But nothing about shitty prints clashed together is aspirational.

I could not believe how bad the clothes were. The whitewashing of Paris is exactly what I expected from this show. Look at "Sex and the City" or white people's "Friends". BTW, most Americans do not travel abroad. They have NO idea about other countries and probably just don't care.

So 🤷🏻‍♀️ going into the show your expectations can’t be based on her then working for luxury brands, that’s the whole point, she ISN’T a luxury girl (ignore all the Chanel, she’s trying to be luxury) to me, looking at the stylist for the show’s past experience and fashion, it does seem like she dressed Emily badly purposefully -look at how all the French characters are dressed! Theater/movies and tv dress characters not based on what’s best for the viewer but to help build character and give you a better idea of the character. Imagine a show happening in New York, where everybody is white (apart from like 2 poc characters just to be save) and walks only in Chanel or other haute couture clothes daily and then there is this tourist from France who thinks that it’s stupid that not everybody can speak French and everybody thinks that they are quirky enough to stop their lives and entertain them and there are these scenes like singing Sweet Home Alabama in the middle of the Central Park and everybody stops because it’s American song and it just makes them close to tears and yeah, that’s how it feels to watch Emily in Paris from the European perspective. Paris is in the top 5 most diverse cities in the world and yet the show whitewashes it extremely.

I completely agree but as a Muslim American, witnessing the policies being put in place in France, policies which are basically erasing those diverse identities you mentioned... like forcing Muslim women to take off their headscarves in public spaces, I’m just going to say it but like goodness gracious, France has a serious xenophobia and bigotry problem against other marginalized groups... you can make the argument “so does America..” but to make actual policies which basically attempts to erase marginalized identities and culture for the sake of “assimilation” is a whole bunch of bull and directly violates human rights. France is trash. There I said it. Oh, and so is America.

I feel like the outfits fit her character tbh. It becomes clear throughout the show that she doesn’t belong in Paris and that she’s out of place there. She also clearly thinks that she (/the US) is standard for everything and doesn’t even try to fit in. It’s kind of a funny coincidence that the audience reacted to her outfits the same way they reacted to her, even though the stylist probably didn’t intentionally do that. The reactions of the other characters to her fashion choices speak for themselves. The show is still entertaining though.

It was so bad on so many levels. Fashion for a character should always represent what the character stands for and who the character is. This is why the outfits in e.g. Clueless made sense - they were rich teenagers but naive to the outside world. I feel like with Emily in Paris they tried the 'sex and the City' or 'Dynasty' iconic outfits that shaped a generation route, but the failed to consider important things: 1. Emily is not rich, at least we have no reason to believe she is. The characters in Dynasty were SUPER rich, so it made sense to have new outfits for every occasion and wearing brands all the time etc. 2. We should belive that Emily has over-the-top fashion but in a charming way. This is problematic on many levels, because for one, she is not the character to be over the top; two, she is not charming, she is annyoing at best and three, it just makes it look like she is (color) blind. 3. All the other characters telling her that her fashion is just whack should have been seen as: 'They are just not open minded to the american way!' But with what she was actually wearing, they were just right.

She looks like an over-enthusiastic American girl who's desperately trying to fit in and doesn't quite get the French woman chic aesthetic.
