In reference to Haute Couture, you’ll rarely find any HC clients actually talk about their HC pieces. It’s a very secretive circle to be in and there are those who don’t like to advertise they are a part of it. There are some clients who will even send assistants in their place so they don’t even have to go to the show!!

Yeah I don't get what the big deal is, in Shanghai even normal rental homes have finger print locks, I mean most phones have finger print scans now right, it's pretty normal

If you watch Couture Fashion in Paris nowadays, you'll see less and less of Caucasians sitting to watch. Old money are not interested in Haute Couture anymore. Mostly New Money from Asia particularly Chinese. You see the getting the invites to sit in and watch. Times are indeed changing.

this is why people like her are slaves to fashion and will buy anything that is in fashion in that particular year , I am in the fashion industry in Japan and I have seen many not so rich Japanese women who are a lot stylish and elegant than her by not putting on all these big brand on your body, Japanese women loved mixing brands with vintage or like you say custom made pieces. when you have all these big brands from head to toe is just "vulgar" and loud. yes wealth can buy you everything but not style and good taste.

For those who can't grasp just how humid Singapore is: It's 33 degrees Celsius right now (91 degrees Farenheit, which is actually a pretty low temperature for Singapore weather standards!) I am sitting down at the table in a relatively open-air area (so it is not suffocating in the least), and I am sweating just by sitting still. Humidity levels on non-rainy days average at about 70%+. We are suffering.

Not everybody cares about it lol. As long is not exotic skin I personally couldn't care less, people are eating meat everyday anyways.

One thing that bugs me with Hermès is that they are incredibly SEXIST when it comes to selling Birkin bags. I had to build up a reputation and purchase history with a salesperson before I was ever able to purchase a Birkin bag, even with requesting private appointments. However, I did an experiment with two of my male friends. I called as their "personal assistants" and dropped wanting to surprise someone with an expensive gift in the conversation and BOTH were offered the opportunity to purchase Birkins with no prior history (one was only offered the bottom of the barrel of what they had on hand, the other was allowed to request the specific bag). I'm not the only person that has experienced this either.

Apparently she rarely turns on the air conditioner and keeps her closet room cool by removing all windows. So no sunlight, heat rays can emit through the windows. All she does is to place dehumidifiers in the room and that's all it took to preserve the conditions of the bags.

I would love to discuss her jewellery collection, I know for a fact that the Cartier Jaguar Bracelet alone is a $10k-25k piece. (I'm a fine Jewellery maniac.)

She has more Birkins in her closet than Hermès has in the store. Those skin bags (croc and alligator are MADE TO ORDER). Especially if there are diamonds on the hardware. Each bag that she has is on the custom end of the spectrum

I figured i’d jump in to elaborate on your comment to do with climate and storing bags. From where i’m sitting, i’d guess there’s absolutely some sort of climate control in that closet. Especially with the climate in singapore, storing that many leather handbags has you fighting against leather’s greatest enemy - humidity. Jamie is absolutely right that boxes suffocate the bags, and not just in the aesthetic sense but also in the literal sense. I have a friend who stored all her bags in boxes in her closet, many of which were only getting pulled once a year, and after leaving them for some time she returned after a particularly humid summer to find multiple pieces bubbling and deteriorating. It seemed like the issue was the stale humid air stuck inside the box. And the crazy part was this was happening on all sorts of kinds of leather, from predictably delicate lamb skin all the way up to safiano. She even had one LV coated canvas piece form bubbles. I still don’t fully understand how that happened or why, but I know it stopped when she moved into an dryer space and started storing them in their dust bags out of the boxes. I know this is super anecdotal, but just wanted to share and I figured someone might find it interesting.

I do find it very interesting indeed, thank you so much for sharing. I'd like to add that clothing and accessories can be very challenging to conserve since they are often made with many different materials - particularly, there's often metal pieces (zippers, buttons, metallic threads, beads, etc.) attached to the main body of the garment/accessory, which is usually either in natural fibers or animal skin. Metal and natural fibers are conserved at different temperature and humidity, so to properly store garments that have both can be hard. Not to forget all the bone/shell/wood decorations and other types of fabrics that have their own needs. Also, light exposure can do a LOT of damage - it can gravely affect colour and dry/burn certain materials.

Concur. I was in a ridiculous situation where I bought a LV pouch with rusted metal ware (it was a stud that I overlooked). Guess what LV replied me when I sent them an email few days later after the purchase? They reminded me that Singapore is an extremely humid country thus the oxidization. No other form of service recovery in that email. I refrain from buying anything from LV since. On a personal note, I need to use electric dehumidifying rods in my wardrove as I had mold growing on clothes before! Leather products are just tip of the iceberg!

That’s why Hermès is so exclusive and maintains brand equity so well. They never dilute the craftsmanship with trendy. Also, the special order “horse shoe” bags are when the client gets to be as creative as they want. It’s old school and I think it works

I can even see how the birkin would be a nice bag to use for everyday life. You're 100% right that it doesn't trabslate well as a statement piece. If I didn't know the "value" of those bags, having them all lined up in different colours and sizes, just seems like the world's most uninspiring bag store. The fact that these retail for tens of thousands of dollars honestly kind of makes me sick. The cost of the labour and materials involved none withstanding. I'm with Luke on this one. I just moved here in Singapore, and everywhere I look there’s someone carrying a luxury brand. Not everyone of course, but there’s not a day I go out without seeing a Chanel bag. Especially when I go to Orchard 😅

You're right that Hermes is not fashion-forward. With their Birkins and Kellys, they aren't trying to be. Their art really begins with their dyes and colors, their seasonal colors, the vibrancy of their leather. The bag itself has not and will not ever change. It's meant to be a heritage piece. So I agree with what you're saying. I think people "want" something out of Hermes that they just aren't going to get.

Your comments about how you would take your hypothetical Birkin everywhere with you until it was busted.... Reminds me of the papparazi shots of Mary-Kate Olsen carrying a Birkin that looked like it was run over by a truck. So beat up. Goals, honestly.

I was gifted a small leather Coach bag (not even close obvi, but for me it is still expensive af) and to me it looked way better once it was beaten in a bit. It looked less like a model and something I have to be styled all over like for a photoshoot in order to pull it off, and more like something I can just pull on casually.

Now we know who buys that Dior feminist t-shirt lol

I really enjoy when you stop for a seemingly random screenshot to then name all the wonderful bags we wouldn't have noticed as they are not commented by the presenter (Jamie in this case). I mean we all know this.. but I must reiterate, your knowledge is so admirable!

ok not directly related to this video but I really appreciate your channel because, although I'm not super knowledgeable on more luxury brands, it's helping me learn a lot more about the haute couture fashion industry! I'm gonna have to look more into the history behind brands I like haha

I adore her. Her knowledge how she understands things and her personal likes and preference and the construction and make. Also how she understands and talks about things but comes across like a kind friend not like many others who do closet tours and seem haughty. She like your older best friend. That and her variety in what she likes but this lovely collection she has just screams her.

my biggest letdown is the lack of perfume collections in closet tours. i need to see peoples summer and winter choices. the little glimps of her sample collection of Les Saisons de Chanel made me happy, i had gardenia and it was beautiful.

The value of the Birkin actually increased by 13% in 2019 and luxury bags were more popular than art pieces as investment pieces go 🙂 just read an article about it the other day

They're not investment pieces lol. Purse fanatics have spread that lie to make themselves feel better about wasting so much money. A Birkin bag loses 20% of its value the second it leaves the store, and devalues fractionally the more you use it, and the longer you have it. It is pretty much impossible to break even on a Birkin, much less make money if you have to sell it; you're going to be LOSING money. Which is literally the opposite of an investment.

@@Nocturne22 Think it's probably too late now to buy now in order to make money off it. Jamie started collecting 20 years ago and, given the inflation rate over the past decade or so and the rise of the ultra rich middle class, I'm not surprised that her bags are worth more than when she bought them.

I wonder if Hermes bags will end up as a very expensive version of Beanie Babies where people think they have value but then the bubble crashes. Sure there are some like the Himalayan one that will always be coveted but the less exclusive ones will not hold as much value. I guess it is like every market, even housing isn't foolproof as we've seen.

Birkin have been coveted for decades now so I'm not sure when the bubble will burst.

I love the shape of the birkin as it was meant to be, a travel bag. The lock system makes it difficult for anyone to try and steal things inside.

Would love to see you do a review of Carrie Bradshaw's style from Sex and The City.

you should look into the history of birkins! i think it'd be a really interesting video, especially for a "younger" audience who might not know why they're so expensive and why they have waitlists

Loved this video Luke. It makes me realize I'm so nosy but JC did not disappoint ! One of the best closets (in terms of content) ever I think ;) However, around the 10:30 mark, I believe the little cube bags are Moynat. It's a super old french leather goods company which is super established and actually has some interesting designs. It's been gaining traction from the luxury youtubers lately because it's pretty exclusive and the history is there, so they love that.

I think you misinterpreted what she said. She meant that it was hard to shop for channel jackets because a lot of their designs age you so when she does buy one she has to really careful it doesn't do that.

I'm pretty sure that's bulletproof glass. Either way, crime rates in Singapore are extremely low, she probably has the fingerprint scanner just to keep her housemaids away from that room.

I LOVEEEE when you pour your knowledge onto these people’s collection, that you know, they probably don’t know about anyway lol (JC does know the stories behind some of her pieces though, so, respect ♥️)

I really love her. She’s so easy going and her personality is just humble and I love that

Laughed when you said she cleaned before because no ones closet looks like that... She must have staff that keeps the closet the way she wants it and dusts/cleans all those accessories

I'm studying to become a fabric conservator for historical garments! I know that for bags (even ones from the 70s) storing them in dark, dry places are best. It's not just light but the humidity that can really damage a bag. Storing antique ones especially need care, but they can be wrapped in acid-free tissue paper or a cotton pillow case.

@@missserenity1090 no kidding, me too! most of my bags can’t fit my old phone (iphone xr), only now that I changed to the 13th mini that it fit inside most of them😂 There’s something ab mini bags that are just so appealing tho!! They’re small and quite versatile, doesn’t take up much space but of course doesn’t hold much stuff either! Nevertheless, I’m still gonna buy more in the future anyways. Even though I might also need to invest in bigger handbags.
