@@mamag58 If you have a Captain he will have a subordinate, a commander. But a commander can also be the captain of the vessel. He will be the highest ranking member of the ship. It's not uncommon on small-er-ish vessels that full 4-bar ranking captains are not in command. As with a tender or destroyer....in this case the highest ranking member is a 3-bar commander, but being the highest ranking member he is also captain. So...every captain will have a commander but not every commander will have a captain. Even smaller vessels might have a Lieutenant as captain, and if you take out your small pleasure craft, you maybe the captain.

6:08 - a spoodle is a portioning spoon, it's not specifically for spreading sauce onto a pizza, just that cooks have found its flat base to be useful for the purpose; spoodles come in different portion sizes, with a different colour handle for each size. You gather up food in the spoon then level it off, to achieve consistent portions. You can now also buy them on Amazon or from catering equipment firms that also sell to the public.

Actually most of the markings are either paint (waterborne or solventborne) sprayed directly on the pavement or thermoplastic that is heated and melted onto the road. The thermoplastic material can be delivered in forms that are assebled and melted in place. Also in long rolls. Then there is the tape mentioned (adhesive on the back) that is rarely used. Really expensive compared to the systems above. Saying it is how you apply road markings today is like saying that nails are primarily used to make beds for fakirs.

#5 Captain Crunch may be a Commander (O5) by rank, but could still be in command of a destroyer or frigate. The officer in command of a ship in the Navy is referred to as Captain, regardless of what their actual rank is. So calling him Captain Crunch is still perfectly valid. Of course you could also call him Skipper Crunch, but that has less of a ring to it.

In some areas, painting the lines on the road is the most efficient/safest way to make the lines. Using the painting machines does not require closing down a stretch of road/street, it does not need to have an extensively large crew and is generally less expensive to the jurisdiction hiring the workers, or the company hired to do the work. Even though the paint isn't as 'tough' as the tape, it is still used extensively in the upper midwest/plains states, as the tape is much more expensive than paint. The paint colors have been pretty much standardized by now, so no exact mixing of colors is needed.

Military nerd here. On the subject of the captain crunch, fun fact commanders in a navy can be considered captains. I know that it is common practice in the US Navy, for the captain of the ship to not be a captain in rank, but the crew of said ship will still refer to that person as captain anyway. So the crunch isn't technically lying if he has his own ship.

Captain-commandant is a company grade of commissioned officer rank in the air component, land component, the old Belgian Gendarmerie and medical component of the Belgian Armed Forces. A kapitein-commandant (Dutch) or capitaine-commandant (French) ranks directly above a captain and immediately under a major. Officers of this rank usually serve in staff functions or more rarely as small unit commanders (squadron, company). The insignia are three pips under a narrow stripe for the land component, three blue stripes with navy curl for the air component and three gold stripes with navy curl for the medical component. In the naval component, the rank is called luitenant ter zee eerste klasse or Lieutenant de vaisseau de première classe ("ship-of-the-line lieutenant first class"), and the insignia is two and a half gold stripes with a naval curl. Captain-commandant is typically a rank for officers who did not pass the examination to become a major.

Exactly. I was US Navy for 9 years (until 2016). Majority of ship Captains are actually LCDR or CDR's. rarely will you rind an actual captain be captain of a ship unless its huge like a carrier. Most Captain CO's are large unit CO's which aren't ships.

I used to be a purchasing agent for a road construction company in Florida. When the striping and signage company "painted" the lines on the road, it wasn't paint that they used. It's melted thermoplastic. If they were painting lines on a highway, then they used a big truck. Looks like paint spraying onto the road but it's melted plastic. Immediately behind the sprayer is an applicator that puts a layer of ground up glass on the melted plastic while it's still "wet". For smaller things like arrows or stop lines, they use a push cart that also dispenenses melted thermoplastic and glass dust. Of course there are many places, including Florida, where all of those things are done with actual paint or by melting plastic tape with a torch. You can tell the difference by looking closely at the finished product. Just don't look closely during rush hour :)

About the bricks, in older roads, they were layed by hand, of course. Sure, newer roads aren't all that way, but in most older brick roads, like down the center of a very old town, they most likely were layed by hand, and in many places I know, they're still the original bricks, kept with just a small amount of maintenance every once in awhile. Still, it's annoying as heck to drive on; they're so bumpy!

I live around a historical area, and there's tons of bricks laid on the sidewalk in town with little memorials imprinted onto each brick. Each one has a different name and date. The memorialized bricks are basically scattered about town, lain in with the other, normal ones. But there are areas where it's just a large area of names on the ground

The whole 'Captain' thing isn't correct. The stripes on the sleeves represent Length of Service (left arm) or Length of Time Deployed (right arm). Each stripe on the left represents 3 years. Each bar on the right arm represents 6 months. (These are by U.S. Army dress standards) So the stripes on his lower sleeve have nothing to do with his rank.

#5. Not true, the commanding officer of any ship is called Captain, regardless of his actual rank. #1 The tape is used where the markings are temporary, like in construction zones. They usually paint the markings.

Not true.. I have seen those tape ones used many times.. But they are usually used in places where paint would get worn off fast due to traffic wearing them down.. places like the multiple white lines where you are supposed to stop at a red light, and even a lot of arrows to tell you it is a turning lane.. But again, these are area that are usually "very" high traffic.. Not your everyday side road, or on very old blacktop.. But I did get a laugh at his "could you imagine how long this would take trying to paint this" comment to the handicapped sign.. Uh.. Lay the stencil down, spray paint over it, pick the stencil up, done.. Yup.. Really hard.. lol PS.. Those stencils they sell are not that expensive (considering all the work that they save), and are made out of plastic, so definitely reusable for hundreds of times..

In my area most markings are still done with paint trucks and stencils like turn arrows (mostly by hand so the arrows match up with the old ones). Signs are posted "Do not cross wet paint" for obvious reasons. They do stick on those little white reflective bumps with blobs of adhesive though. Can't remember if that's by machine or by hand. I guess if they only need a few it's by hand. The little yellow 'flaps' go on by machine during road construction.

@mikael So true. Even here in the United States, the entire scientific community uses the Metric system. Both because it is more precise and accurate, and because they constantly work with other scientists all over the world. Metric is a world standard for a reason. Heck, even in places where you would see the Standard system used a lot, its usually a mix of Standard and Metric, like construction and architecture. So yes, the US may have put a man on the moon, but we used the Metric system to do it. And I agree with OP, the lack of what type of degrees he ment bugged me. Because there's a huge difference between 200 degrees Celsius verses 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • @OriginalPiMan

    @OriginalPiMan

Don't forget that the American system is defined in terms of metric. An inch is exactly 2.54cm because there are legal standards defining it as such. And he didn't say what type of degrees because he is British and therefore assumed everyone is civilised; which is approximately true. Only around 5% of people live in countries that don't use metric as standard.

You need an editor. Time 6:30 "patio's" is spelled wrong. A very common mistake that is getting more common. No apostrophe is needed, and it totally changes the focus of the word. The point of pointing it out is that the more it is misused the more people will think it is correct and use it more, which then makes the language less precise.

I've seen so many online news reports, comments and postings where people commonly don't spell words correctly and then when you give them the correct spelling or say anything about it, they get mad and call you a grammar nazi. Maybe they should just learn how to spell and not be afraid to learn or get correction from someone. Or maybe they would feel better if you just let them continue to look like an illiterate dumb ass.
