Every Time I Get Hit, the Roguelike Changes

Ойындар

Roguelikes are hard. And there’s this weird misconception with roguelikes that you have to play perfect. You watch KZreadrs play them and they talk about taking bad damage, or losing flawlesses. They get frustrated if they have low health or god forbid, lose a run. But the reality is that roguelike games are SUPPOSED to be like that. They’re supposed to be challenging and you’re supposed to lose sometimes and today I’m going to prove it. What if the only way to win a roguelike was to flawless every run? To never get hit? What if every time you got hit, the roguelike changed?

I hate to say this... but I love to say this um actually the term is roguelite because a roguelike is a term used for turn based games in which if you die you must restart from the beginning however these games aren't turn based!!! Lol doesn't even matter if you say rogue lite it sounds just like rogue like there really isn't a difference in how the 2 words are used (tho they do mean different things and technically roguelite is correct).

As a designer, we learn about how older games expected you to die around X number of times before progressing, but in modern post arcade design, health serves more as “amount of mistakes you can make”. So it’s ok if you get hit, that’s why you get health!

well probably because old games follow the mentality of you die a lot and each time you die you pay money to play again. So it make sense them to make you die a lot XD Also kind of same mentality with free to play games. Now they create problems and sell solutions. That even bleed to games you pay to own as well.

Fantastic video and an important message. It's not even just players getting wrong impressions from these flawless (or just way too good for an average impression) videos btw. I've seen quite a few developers base changes (e.g. balancing) on them, cause they're often just the most visible and analyzable feedback they're getting. But they're massively distorted towards high-tier "I play games like this all day" skill levels. Something to keep in mind for sure!

I love this. Some roguelikes that aren't in the video that I think would be possible to no-hit: Crypt of the Necrodancer, Noita, Hades, Magicite, Risk of Rain, Risk of Rain 2, Super Amazing Wagon Adventure. Some that I don't think are possible at all but would be interesting anyway: Nova Drift, Loop Hero, Sword of the Stars: The Pit.

No shot you can no-hit RoR1 without Glass. Crypt has a built-in character that requires a no-hit run with dagger only, so very doable there. Noita and RoR2 are IMO about the same difficulty; Noita will eventually randomly chip you with a stray bullet or DoT stain, RoR2 has Lesser Wisps. Hades is a nice mix between 'super hard' and 'reasonably doable without relying on RNG/dodging comically under-telegraphed minor damage'.

@@awesomefuzz4008 RoR1 and 2 are *possible.* I didn't say they were reasonably doable, just possible. Noita hitless runs have been done and you get a unique reward for it even. RoR1 also has an achievement for getting past the 3rd teleporter without getting hit.

@@awesomefuzz4008 You could probably do RoR2 with Mercenary with enough practice. There's a person who does every single Prismatic Trial as default Mercenary without taking hits, basically serving as sort of proof of "You can get Ethereal at any time, you don't have to wait for a specific trial" Prismatic is only two stages, playing a full run is definitely much different. You'd need to be good at looting efficiently and get good enough damage items to carry you through later stages.

Idea: What if you did another video/made this into a miniseries where you select 3-4 random rougelikes, and whenever you get hit move down the list. When you get hit on the last game, go back to the first, but keep the progress you made on each game. The challenge would end when you beat one of the games. Blazing Beaks f.e. is downright boring without health mgm. especially due to the secret room mechanic. Now how about Bombslingers, Has Been Heroes and Death Road to Canada for the next attempt?;o) Would love this to become a new steady installment like the wheel maybe switching after each level or certain amount of points? And could it work competitively with a guest like Isaac mirror runs? Cheers!

Many people play games for the same reason. You learn the process, become a "pro," and then exercise your mastery over the process. Roguelikes and puzzle games shuffle things up so the player can find semi-unique situations that require their ability to navigate through successfully. Multiplayer competitive games offer a ranking system so people can see their progress relative to the general population. RPGs offer a common story thread so people can socialize and comprehend the accomplishments of themselves and other fans. Many genres also provides forgiveness. Puzzle games give hints, competitive games give unranked environments, and RPGs allow one to over-prepare. Some roguelikes, like Hades, makes the difficulty optional, but for the most part, roguelikes seem to go with a trial by fire in order to create a sense of pride and accomplishment. This certainly appeases the more extreme players of the genre, but for people that don't know the difference between a lack of skill and bad luck, they'll discard a roguelike when it repeatedly kills them and they're forced to start over. Permanent progression can help, but permanent progression in roguelikes needs to be done very carefully, as it can eat into a player's perceived progress in becoming "skilled" at the game if any progress can be seen as "make game easier."

SORRY TO BE WRITING A WHOLE-ASS ESSAY IN YOUR COMMENTS BUT YOU SAID SOME THINGS THAT MADE ME THINK I think to get through a tough roguelike you have to be confident in a couple of things 1. I enjoy the core gameplay and would like to beat the game 2. As long as I continue to enjoy the core gameplay I can persevere. 3. As long as I can persevere I am progressing, even if said progress is not linear or apparent to me. 4. As long as I am progressing, I cannot be set back, dying can only bring me closer to beating the game. Even if I didn't learn much from that death, I am still getting closer to the day that I beat the game (That's how time works, it passes.) 5. If I'm not actually being set back by death, then there is no reason to feel frustration. Why would you be mad that you are closer to your goal? The only way to "lose" in a roguelike (and at your life goals, in general) is to get bored or frustrated. If you get too bored, you won't be able to make yourself continue. "Why am I doing instead of not doing?" If you get too frustrated, you'll convince yourself that your goal could never be reached in the first place, and you'll prove yourself correct. "Why am I trying instead of not trying?" I should say that there's no shame in getting bored or frustrated with something, there will be something else to do or try. You will die long before you run out of things to do/try. Even if you fail again and again to achieve your goals, you are still getting closer to the day that you do achieve a goal (That's how time works, it passes). This means that simply choosing to keep living and to keep doing means that you are making progress, even if you feel like you are in a rut, like you're wasting time/effort. Your progress isn't going to be linear or apparent. I think this is the appeal of roguelikes, they show you that you can win by failing over and over again, just like in real life.

For me it's def spelunky, I actually think you are goated at it, your plays are sometimes a little questionable but judt like taking casey in a no-damage run, I LIKE the risk taking Also, could you do some more videos on that pixelated archer game thst you did a long time ago? That seems pretty cool, would like to see more of it

I'd love to end up getting a flawless run on Wizard Of Legend. It's a favorite for me, as along with items your move set itself is part of the randomness. And if you're skilled enough, you could take a win without a single item pickup, nothing but the gear you chose to start with. Whenever I get hit it always feels like it was something I did wrong, and getting that in a roguelike is an art in itself. Also the final boss hits you with the UltraKill v2 style "I'm you but better" and shmooves on you.

to be fair I had ALOT of runs of slay the spire where you just never take any damage because you have SO MUCH armor every turn

I think it’s considered a rougelite if you have some kind of permanent upgrade you can buy to make future runs slightly easier? I personally prefer those kinds of games as it makes losing over and over again more bearable as I have something I can work towards, however small, with each failed attempt. Not saying rougelikes don’t have their place, or that ones with unlocks that just expand the item pool can’t be fun sometimes, I just personally prefer something a bit more concrete. Great video though!

I’ve had two flawless slay the spire runs. One with Ironclad where I had a bunch of double armor cards. Ended up with literally thousands of armor while fighting the heart. The other was an ice run with the defect. I had super high focus and channeled so much ice that I’d have >60 block each turn. And I got the calipers artifact which makes block degrade by 15 every turn instead of all of it. Not as good as my Ironheart build (especially because I didn’t have body slams and calipers aren’t as good as barricade) but it works

At the beginning, it makes sense, but imagine you get junken in the Gungeon And then you die and remember you have a one percent chance of getting him if you already got them once in your entire play through swell, imagine how frustrated I was when I got ammo condo and I was the worst character for him and I had a tier 3 junken

If I was under threat of rock based knee surgery I think the rougelike I'd try to no hit would be dead cells with one step from eden as a close second because both games encourage you to go fast but generally let you take your time and be careful, plus they're short and the less time you spend in combat the lower your chances of taking a hit.

A game I'd feel confident having a flawless run would be vampire survivors though it really depends what limitation I have. Also depends how you define flawless. Like, into the breach is pretty reasonable to flawless if you define it as not losing civilian but very hard (or often impossible) if nothing can take damage. Or a game like invisible inc. is pretty much expecting you to not lose anyone in your run (cause if you do it goes downhill pretty quickly).
