The jump from Rogue to Pokemon: MD, is... huge. Not an attack, but the title made me think there would be more, since you skipped like 2 stages (or more) of Rogue like/dungeon crawler evolutions.

Oh! I remember some titles! Moria, Hack, and NetHack were some I played personally.. Castle Of The Winds was on everyone's home PC. I see a lot of sources talking up Angband, but I never heard of it, so how big could it have been, really? ;-) There was a dry spell of video games in the late 80s that Nintendo and Sierra barely pulled us out of. A good friend of the family has been trying to tell us about Caves Of Qud for a year or so, but I have no context.

Honestly I prefer this, hearing about about YOUR experiences with these games, as opposed you reading a synopsis off of wikipedia about a bunch of games you haven’t played or, is 100% preferred- I’m only like a 1/4 through the video so far and I’m loving it!

Technically it's a pretty minor jump since MD games are actually mechanically extremely similar to Rogue in many ways that other traditional roguelikes aren't thanks to Mystery Dungeon games seemingly being inspired by the game Rogue as it was without the awareness of it trying to emulate D&D and falling short of it in various ways like having just a single attribute called Strength instead of tons of them and not having classes or detailed character creation. Personally I think those "failings" make the game better(higher focus on items and monsters instead of your character build) and thus find most Mystery Dungeon style roguelikes quite interesting.

It also just like, doesn’t matter at all? It’s just a word. 99% of my viewers don’t care and click on anything with roguelike in the title. When I used to use roguelite and cared about this song and dance years ago, everybody instead told me to just use roguelike because the distinctions were too confusing. Fast forward 4 years and the same 20 people yell at me in every video. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ can’t win

'Roguelike' in the title should have been 'Roguelite,' they're extremely different genres, and only 3 roguelikes actually appeared in this video (Rogue, Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon, Crypt of the Necrodancer). this is especially considering roguelikes are inherently a genre where avoiding hits is practically impossible, with the combat being turn-based instead of real-time. for future reference, a roguelike is a game that, as the name implies, is LIKE the game ROGUE. while rogueLITES only harbor a couple minor features from the genre (random generation, permadeath), rogueLIKES are games that are extremely similar to the game Rogue. to elaborate, this includes essential features such as: having turn-based combat, being locked to a tile-based grid, and being non-modal (as in, any action can be taken at any time). i would highly recommend playing roguelikes, as they are a very unique genre with gaming experiences you won't find anywhere else, especially in the modern day. such as: NetHack (Brutal, unforgiving, the gold standard for the Roguelike genre) Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, colloquially known as dcss (Another amazing standard-setting entry in the genre, simple to get into yet still as heinously difficult to conquer as ever) Tales of Maj'Eyal, otherwise known as TOME Ancient Domains of Mystery, also known as ADOM DoomRL (Very simple to get into yet still remaining traditional, would highly recommend this as a starting point for people new to the genre) Caves of Qud, or CoQ (My favorite roguelike of all time, extremely fun and full of depth -- with a wonderful tileset that is simultaneously terminal-based while also being highly legible and non-offensive to the eyes, would also highly recommend this one) Jupiter Hell (A modern take on the genre by the developer of DoomRL, the most abstracted roguelike I've ever seen, its smooth 3D graphics will make you forget you're even playing a traditional roguelike) i'm probably forgetting something important here, but whatever

Yes, but as a society, most people don’t know what a roguelite is and most people think all roguelites are roguelikes so for SEO in my titles, roguelike is better for views. I actually put a poll on Twitter yesterday for if people know the difference between roguelikes and roguelites and around 55% have no clue. So as a creator, to optimize my SEO, I have to use roguelike. Sorry if that’s frustrating to you.

I was looking for free games back in college, and stumbled upon a hard as nails RPG with all sorts of weird things like mana storms that caused mutations, and classes like Pianist and Farmer, which I was not expecting in an RPG. Here are some games that I think should make the list, as someone who just got started in the genre, to be fair. Into the Breach is revolutionary not just to Roguelikes but to tactical RPGs. You can actually beat it in your first try if you stop for a second and decipher the language of the game from the start. Hades is a revolutionary game because it brings an actually really good story that makes sense and gives a good excuse to the procedural generation of the dungeons, not to mention doing a lot for meta progression. I would say Astral Ascent should be mentioned but I haven't played it myself just yet

Yessss I love these types of videos from you! I do want to shout out the mobile game Magic Survival, which as far as I'm aware, it the origin of the bullet heaven genre. Having played it years before Vamp Survivors came out, it's never sat right with me that Vamp became the de facto father of the genre. It's so cool that after all these years, devs are still finding ways to revolutionize this genre

Don’t really even consider noita a roguelike if I’m honest. It’s much more of an adventure game than a roguelike

Whaaaaat? Them's strong words. It's got levels, upgrades, and a win condition, with permadeath. If Spelunky is a Roguelike surely Noita is. If they add a bunch of additional content on the sides to expand the gameplay potential, well that's just one hell of a bonus isn't it? @@OlexaYT

  • @kinnectar820

@@OlexaYT Yes, it is very different from most every other game, I'd say that's what makes it significant in the history of Roguelikes. Just like Nuclear Throne, Slay the Spire, Risk of Rain, and even Vampire Survivors all broke the mold of what could be considered a roguelike when compared with Rogue, Noita does the same by adding several brand new elements of simulation, the "wand building" mechanic, and yes the ability to break out of the core linear roguelike progression and explore the world. It does make me think that there is a branching of the subgenre here, something like "open world roguelikes" maybe? Games lake Caves of Qud, KeepRL, even maybe Terraria would go in there, though they lack the emphasis on the win-condition and periodic "rewards for beating the level" that Noita maintains. Rogulikes are a spectrum, lol!

Technically vampire survivors was a reskin of magic survival. Kinda wish that was ported well to pc so it could have gotten a showcase as it's genuinely pretty good as the true progenitor of the "*** survivor/survival" bullet heaven rogue lites.
