ABOUT THE GOOD PLACE
From creator Michael Schur (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Master of None”) comes a unique comedy about what makes a good person. The show follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell, “House of Lies,” “Veronica Mars”), an ordinary woman who enters the afterlife, and thanks to some kind of error, is sent to the Good Place instead of the Bad Place (which is definitely where she belongs). While hiding in plain sight from Good Place Architect Michael (Ted Danson - “Cheers,” “CSI” - in an Emmy Award-nominated performance), she’s determined to shed her old way of living and earn her spot.

    I think it's an underrated aspect of this show that the first season *is* attempt number 1. because it would have been so easy to add to the twist by going "you're in the bad place, and this is the one millionth time you've been rebooted" or something like that. the fact that we are actually there to see the start of the cycle is really good both for the story and the development of Michaels character. I just don't think I've ever seen someone mention that before

    Also, in a way we got to see, for the first time, Elenor die. She always had memories from her life. Everyone else seems to carry their memories to the afterlife. But during every reboot, that afterlife version of her was getting lost. By watching the very first installment of Michael’s hell we saw “our” Elenor, from the first season, truly die/disappear, for the first time. The continuity of who she is was lost.

    There was no specific failure. The failure was that you can't constantly torture people without them realising that they're being tortured. If you make people miserable in paradise they're gonna realise they're not in paradise. Also I love how it was normally Eleanor that figured it out. 💓

    Yes! And Eleanor was the one who pretty much always figured it out cuz she knew that she belonged in the Bad Place. Chidi and Tahani believed that they belonged in the Good Place, so they looked over all the things that made them miserable. And Jason was too dumb to put the pieces together (except that one time which was /definitely/ a new low for Michael). So… moral of the story: always believe you belong in the Bad Place.

    Can we just talk about how intelligent Eleanor had to be to figure it out the first time? This may sound stupid because a lot of you might have thought it was obvious but she may be one of the smartest characters I’ve seen recently, because it was an incredibly complicated, unusual situation and she managed to somehow see through the strange lines.

  • @aionicthunder

    @aionicthunder

    Жыл бұрын

    That is Eleanor’s intelligence in a nutshell: she has dealt with so many ashholes in her life that her bullshirt detector is mad strong. All four of them are intelligent, just in their own way. Chidi, of course, is the most book-smart. He possesses the most general information out of the four. He has a brilliant scientific mind (that he decided was to be used for philosophy…) Tahani is the most socially intelligent. She can function in basically any social situation and lies even better than Eleanor. It also helps that she has the most experience helping people. Jason is the most emotionally intelligent. He understands the people around him very well. So well that he knows exactly how to help them. It’s why he puts the magnets on Janet

    After seeing all these reboots all together like this, something occurred to me. The reason they keep figuring it out, is because the place is SO bad, they eventually HAVE to figure it out. Micheal is actually doing a good job at torturing them. He really could have just continued to reboot them, and torture them for eternity. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤗

  • @joinsideke

    @joinsideke

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's exactly what I was thinking. You couldn't get them to torture each other forever, someone would always figure it out eventually. But wiping their memories and having them do it over and over again? That sounds like hell. Especially when you consider the times they go to Mindi's house and learn how many times they failed to escape, hammering in how hopeless it was (before Micheal gave up and joined them). It actually runs into the same problem as the Good Place, in that even if they don't figure it out, they will eventually just get used to it, making it lose all impact. There either has to be an ending point or a reboot.

    Kristoff B Well he didn’t expect to have gone to the Bad Place. Plus if someone says you’re in heaven, you wouldn’t dare question it out of fear. At least Chidi wouldn’t. @@DeathnoteBB You are correct he did not expect that, but he is a professor of moral philosophy after all and there are serious moral and philosophical questions here - e.g. could you be in heaven/paradise/good place knowing that other being are suffering (in bad place)? Could you be in heaven/paradise/good place if you are in fear of even questioning something? (Maybe those things were left like this for viewers to notice and ask themselves?) By the way - it may sound I'm nitpicking and pointing to a "plot hole" but that's not my intention. I'm not a screenwriter but for me as a viewer it worked narratively quite well.

  • @DeathnoteBB

    @DeathnoteBB

    Kristoff B I mean, it did make Chidi uncomfortable that people he asked about were in the Bad Place. Whether he “could” be in heaven when others aren’t wasn’t really an issue as he had no say in where he went and obviously he wouldn’t want to be in the Bad Place just because others are. I mean he did well on earth even though others didn’t, so that’s not an issue. It’s not logical anyway to feel the need to suffer because other people are suffering. And I guess not, as they weren’t actually in the Good Place at all and part of the reason why was because Eleanor realized first that they were all suffering, even more than just Jason and herself. I only write as a hobby but personally from my pov it made sense. (And yeah I agree it works narratively as well)
