The Good Place, Ending Explained - What Happens After?

Ойын-сауық

After all its twists and turns, The Good Place ends by returning to its original question: what happens after we die? In this video, we figure out where Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Jason (Manny Jacinto) all end up, and how a show about the afterlife is in fact about what we do here on earth.

Sometimes I feel like life is moving too fast. I keep wanting to take it slow. Oh, you need 30 credits to get through high school? What if I just took one credit each year? But then I have to remind myself that if I did that, 30 years will have passed. There's only so much they can do in your 80-year time limit.

Atheists bash religion and the absurdity of following the philosophy of a “self-proclaimed divine creature,” yet they claim that man-made philosophy, such as that presented in the good place, is an absolute truth and a fact of life. They’re saying they don’t like superstition, but they can’t live without it, without something more to believe in. They say we’re organic matter that decomposes, but they can’t help not committing suicide without convincing themselves that “this life” matters for some mysterious reason. I love this show because it brings out the humanity of everyone, the desire to pursue meaning beyond a shallow existence. People of every belief - Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists, Agnostics, etc - can all connect to this show in the same way. I honestly do not know the absolute truth, or if there even is a truth. Perhaps life is truly meaningless. For the sake of my sanity, I will stick to my belief in God.

For me, for as long as I remember I wanted to die. I lost all meaning in life and only lived to get a job to make a lot of money because I thought that would make me happy. This show made me realize that that won't bring me happiness. I never connected with people ever, my friendships never lasted long since I never put effort into maintaining them. Then I met some people that connected with me and brought meaning back into my life. They helped me see that there's more to my life. And I built connections with them and helped them out when they needed it. Maybe one day I'll get a good job and make a lot of money, but I'll know that that isn't what's going to make me happy, it's the connections I have with people.

How could you not be sad with the ending? When any work of art makes you care about it, seeing it end will pretty much always be, at best, bittersweet. For me, however, what was saddest was that this wonderful, thought provoking thing ended, and there was nobody to commiserate with. Pretty much everyone I know just couldn't or wouldn't "get" the show.

My favorite part of the last two episodes is that just like how the good place was given an exit door, we as an audience were also given that choice. The choice to stop there, with all of our favorite characters happy and together in the good place, or to watch the last episode and metaphorically walk through the final door. And we get to do this in our own time and say goodbye to the show whenever we feel ready to.

It’s a very nice sentiment and a sweet way to look at it, but realistically that’s not what the writer was thinking when he wrote that...Deciding to stop before the characters walked through the door is not metaphorically synonymous with staying in The Good Place for eternity, just means you’re finishing before it’s over, and The Good Place is never over. Again it’s a nice way too look at but that’s about it haha :)

I thought it was a really brave ending. The idea of an afterlife is soothing to us all, whereas they pulled the rug from under us and ending with the idea of no afterlife- of dissolving in to nothingness. The more logical option but not overly comforting. I loved the show- so clever, so funny, so heart warming. I did feel sorry for Janet- even though they got round it by explaining how she experiences time.

When I heard the wave analogy it resonated with me. While I don't believe in an afterlife, I thought how lucky I am to have known good people some of whom are no longer with us and instead of having regret I had an epiphany that I was lucky to have them be willing to call me their friend. A truly inspiring series which opened my eyes to many things.

I've watched alot of series/sitcoms. I have to say The Good Place finale is among top 5. Many great shows fumble on how to properly end their shows and let their fans have closure to the characters they fall in love with for the duration of the run, maybe years. The Good Place, like this video mentioned, went back to the root and the beginning of the show for its finale. It doesn't over explains stuffs the writers really don't know, in this case afterlife. It just leave a tiny bit of ambiguity for the viewers. Not really a happy ending, nor is it a sad ending but definitely a satisfying one.

I was so afraid this show would go the way of so many others, just going on and on until it turned to shit and then cancelled. I'm sad it ended, but it's a good thing. A good end. Huh, in a way, the show is like the Good place. It's good because there is an end.

This reminds me of the concept mentioned in Yunus Emre’s one poem(?). Roughly translates to: What is it that they call paradise (Jannah), A couple of mansions a couple of beauties (houri s), Give them to who asks for them, I need you [strictly] you Yunus Emre is talking to god in here, Allah specifically. He doesn’t feel satisfied with the promised beauties of the good place, he longs eternity and beauty through god itself. Often this poem is read as Yunus Emre’s love towards god but I think half the charm of these sentences comes from admitting that what god has offered us as a prize is still just earth but better. I as a believer think that that is done this way so even the most “morally corrupted” can be persuaded to behave the way god wants, by threats and prizes. But if you see beyond earth, which is what most religions ask of their people, then you’ll no longer want those prizes or have a reason to fear those threats and eventually you’ll end up discarding them all to reach god. Weird. What we have been promised and have strived for, the good place, is in actuality just the last thing we need to give up to reach the best place. At least that’s how I see it.

Here's the thing... we NEVER cease to exist. What gets annihilated is our 'false' ego... what we THINK we are... not what we Truly are. We are pure Awareness... THAT which has never been born, and never dies. We are THAT which is the Source ... and Witness of all experiences. To fully Realize one's underlying CONSTANT SELF... which is the SAME in all... that's Enlightenment.
