I'm glad someone remembered this series, ishinimori was a big influnce on me regarding art and stories.

I remember watching The Skullman waaaay back when it first aired and when I had next to no clue about Ishimoris body of work outside of Sentai at that time. So, most of the neat little callbacks, cameos and flatout set-up for different series of his prior and later work flew right over my head. Looking at it now though with the knowledge I have today I'm shocked they didn't just fully commit and make Skullman into a jumping off point for a shared Ishimori-verse back then. They had everything build up already pretty much. We saw allmost all of the major villains of all the shows build up and we also started to see glimpses of our future heroes. Imagine if they'd done that, it would've been what Marvel did with its Movie-Universe but done way sooner then them. If this would've led maybe into a Robot Detective K series, or, heck, way later into a proper anime-remake of the originall Kamen Rider this could've become legendary in the long run.

Love all the references and how it’s sort of a prequel to 009. I’d really like to think that Skull is 009’s father.

The Ishinomori Star System = countless character variants with common given names.

Skullman = Prototype of Kamen Rider.

The Shin Mazinger before Shin Mazinger, in terms of being a gigantic love letter to a mangaka using a specific property to tie them all together

There was a point where I was going to suggest in a comment on Skull Man 07 but I never got around to it. The various connections to MANY series, Easter eggs, etc this show alone is crazy. I remember finding the dvd box set when I was younger and just being captured by the box cover art. I didn’t watch it till years later and in poor quality sadly as I couldn’t find a copy of it anymore in the states. I enjoyed it but I also wanted more of it after it ended but that’s the thing, there was nothing yet at the same time SOMETHING as it introduced me to Kamen Rider, older Skull Man works, and revisiting 009 which I absolutely loved. I also adore the action we get with SM, be it not many imo, but still fun scenes, especially towards the end when we get the full on Skullman with that Kamen Rider aesthetic on the armor. I think you’re the first youtuber I follow who has even bothered talking about Skull Man 07 in some capacity instead of just quick mention. Also can I just say I love the OP song for this anime.

What a nice deep dive of a great anime

So, this is a origin story of the villain of Cyborg 009? That's cool.

I'm begging for a re-release on bluray. This anime became my favourite when I first saw it not knowing anything about Kamen Rider and since then I've become a fan of Kamen Rider and it means even more to me now.

I like how the Skull-Man OVA references and sets up a lot of other Ishinomori properties. I can imagine down the line, more Ishinomori characters eventually appearing in the world of this OVA.

This is making me think of how the western Cyborg 009 comics never got to build a shared universe with the other Ishinomori properties.

Yeah, I talked about it a bit in my video on the failed Cyborg 009 movie. Ishinomori stuff has enough common themes that a shared universe would actually work really well

Me and my partner both love Ishinimori's works (I'm a fan of 009 and my partners a fan of Kamen Rider) and even though our knowledge of his works don't typically cross over, we agreed to start watching this anime because it was something we both had interest in. I had no idea this show was full of so many references to other works though, I think it'll make us want to look into even more things together lol thank you for sharing!

I watch the flying phantom ship here on KZread, this anime and read the kamen rider and robot keiji manga. I never noticed that hayato mikogami was inspired by hayato of the phantom ship

Man this anime is bassiclly the Marvel Cinematic Universe of Shotaro Ishinomori manga isnt it? Especilly fitting since Ishinomori was considered to be the japanese Stan Lee.

damn, i just finished rewatching and I really felt that was an deeper subtle sotry, in one point I thought they make up a timeline of how they talk about the war and japan situation, also explaining the black ghost, now that makes the ending a little bit more bitter but it fits the show

I never cared for this anime before, always thought of it as an edgy reboot, but now, it seems like the ultimate Ishinomori love letter, gotta see it.

It would be interesting if you made a video in the same vein about 009-1. That's one series from the Ishinomori renaissance of the 2000's I barely see anyone talking about. Alternatively, the Ryu trilogy would also be cool to see covered on the channel.

Kamen Rider X was not kidnapped by G.O.D. , him and his father were injured in an attack by G.O.D. so Jin's father equipped him with the X system and turned him into a Kaizorg, then lived as a computer under the sea, professor Shiba style

5:04 Jin Kezuke wasn’t kidnapped and tranformed into a cyborg by GOD. GOD did assassinated Jin but Jin’s Dad, the scientist who specialized in cybernetic, did operated on Jin, transforming him into kamen rider X.

Yee, I hadn’t see X or Stronger when I made this but I knew Kiriko brother was an X reference so that part of the script wasn’t as tight. Thinking about remaking this to make the video more organized, I feel like it jumps around a bit much too.

HiDive, its sentai filmworks streaming service which also has Gatchaman, Ideon, and a bunch of other classic anime...also a bunch of idol shows I've never heard of.
