Honestly, the Cyborg 009 vs Devilman OVA was a treat. I'd love to see more OVAs in the same vein, where they try to cram in as many references to the author's works as possible. It'd be great if they adapted the 8-Man vs 009 manga since we haven't gotten an animated rendition of 8-Man since 1993! That's a long time for such an iconic character!

Ironically, Cutie Honey probably would have made a better partner for the Cyborg 009 cast to crossover with than Devilman. As an android superhero who's frequently targeted by evil organizations for the technology she uses to transform, & who has it out for evildoers in general, she has much more in common with the Cyborg team, and as dark as her stories can get at times she's still usually a more upbeat hero than Devilman. Heck, I can even picture the villains of Cutie Honey getting along better with Cyborg 009's villains than the demonic foes of Devilman, I can picture an alliance of convenience between Black Ghost and Panther Claw for the sake of defeating their mutual foes & harvesting their technology etc, & an inevitable falling out when both sides want it all for themselves. Still, cool to see classic characters like this interact with each other, and you can tell the creators of the show were fans themselves with all the refs they snuck in.

I really liked this OVA. I’m more of a Devilman fan, but this ova got me to rewatch the 2001 anime from back when it was on toonami.

It wasn't my cup of tea but it was still cool seeing the Jinmen fight animated without a weird Southern accent or having his entire personality scrapped.

I like how the thumbnail highlights joe while overshadowing Devilman with text as if he's irrelevant Idk if this is happy accident or subtle detail but it's genius eitherway

This OVA is absolutely killer and a love letter to both series and artists. I really wish we got a modern 009 anime in this style

I love how this had the best Miki from devilman other ones make her to pure. This one keep her love fighting and tomboy personally

I personally believe Skull Man would have been a better fit for a Devilman crossover in terms of content and tone, but i do wonder if the intention was making the OVA a 009 fanservice fest from the start.

I think the Devilman aspect could have been evened out if they just had cyborgs 0014-17 get in over their heads and start morphing into demons (or outright fusing into each other), felt like a missed opportunity to only have Seth/Atun take advantage of that angle.

I agree that the OVA was less "Cyborg 009 vs Devilman" and more "Cyborg 009 featuring Devilman" But i really love Cyborg 009 so i was mostly alright with that. I specially loved the Jinmen fight adaptation, it was perfect.

To be fair that's kind of what most of the VS Devilman works are. Devilman VS Mazinger Z was just Mazinger Z but Devilman is in their universe, Getter Robo VS Devilman was the Getter pilots and Saotome accidentally getting Akira and Sirene thrown at them... Only Devilman VS Hades actually had Devilman as the protagonist instead of a deuteragonist, and even then one of the three volumes was devoted to Koji's side.

This ova got me into Devilman

The only thing that make me sad about this crossover is that the 00 cyborgs will face a horrific end because both this version of 009 and devilman share the same universe That being said i wouldn't mind if they do another crossover but with devilman as the main focus

Probably would have made more sense for the original TV anime version of Devilman to crossover with the Cyborgs in that regard, since his storyline doesn't necessarily end with the apocalypse, just a never-ending quest to defend humanity from the demons he turned his back on out of love for Miki.

@@warriorking4ever and I actually thst remind me of a scene in the Ova this might have been a change in the dub but here it is in the scene where akira wakes up and says you know he didnt look demon like to me after thst Ryo says it your awake and Akira reptiles yes then Ryo says this well it looks we got anonther traitor on our hands then Akirs respond with this awnser you know I never intended to betray them but for some reason they keep calling me amon do wait is this Akira or Amon I don't know if I'm just a dumbass or if that was a change but still confeused or what

The OTHER 009 VS Devilman adaptation (the one-shot manga BREAKDOWN) rules that Akira can match Joe's acceleration and they can literally shatter destiny and reboot the universe into a new version where they're all in school together and humans. So failure isn't the only option in a world with both Joe and Akira.

Some say that Dr. Adams could've easily been the origin story of Dr. Hell from Marzinger Z.

Dude I thought that was going to be the after the credits scene I didn't say it in the video cause I didn't want to be called cringe. I imagined Dr. Adams dying then a demon taking over his body but since he was dead his skin was blue. Then he'd take the remains of Seth and Eva and put them together to make Baron Ashura

Yeah, the Ahoge is an anime thing. Allot of characters like Makoto Naegi from Danganronpa, Meliodos from Seven Deadly Sins, Saber from the Fate series, and many many others have it, though with them its pointing upwards and its on the top of their hair whereas with the kid here its on the back of his hair and its pointing downwards. So for all intents and purposes his hair could be there to replicate Denis the Menace.

Nice jab at 'Game Theory' there. Well played, sir. I hope to see the conclusion to 'The Robotech Saga'.

I want to see a new 009 anime that isn't CG that touches on everything in the manga and continuation Gods War.

I personally liked the ova more so for the cyborg 009 content but the devilmam stuff was still cool love the nods to the other creators works

Considering how Devilman ends, It is a blackpill seeing Joe and his buddies here. Makes you glad this isn't cannon.

I am conflicted with the idea of Cyborg 009 and Devilman being in the same universe. On one hand they’re very similar thematically with commentary on war and philosophical questions on human nature. However they have vastly different tones and endings with Devilman’s outright undoing everything the 00 Cyborgs worked for with everyone dying, God nuking the planet, and resetting the universe as part of Satan’s punishment, albeit with some changes like the main characters being reborn as women or being more child friendly. Then again Cyborg 009 has had the reverse happen in God’s War with Jet and Albert getting bisected and in Jet’s case dismembered. They toned it down in the manga but it’s still something I’d expect from Devilman.

"A RACIST theory....." 10/10 would recommend, would watch again... Instant mastahpeece... A Dumké classic.

Damn! I can't believe there was a crossover manga with 8-Man and Cyborg 009! I would love to see an anime adaption of that done right!!!!

To go a bit more deeper into my thoughts on this OVA, I rather enjoyed it. It’s actually what got me into Devilman and it came out while I was in Highschool when I was still getting into anime at the time and I had long already finished binge watching the 2001 anime. So to see the 009 characters again was really great to see. My biggest complaint though would have to go to the character design. Particularly with the 009 characters. Now I actually do like some of the redesigns, but it really does feel like they’re trying to go half and half with making the characters look more realistic while still keeping their more cartoony designs and stick to Shotaro Ishinomori’s art style. But the more realistic design kinda just clashes with the more cartoony designs. Like I’m glad 008 actually looks like a person instead of a racist stereotype, but I wish they made some of the 009 designs at lit a bit more cartoony. It’s also weird because when we see the Devilman characters, the animators stick very close to Go Nagai’s art style, particularly with the bully characters who look like they were ripped right out of Go Nagai’s manga. Basically I just wish the 009 characters, minus 008, had a bit more similar to their designs in the 2001 anime. Again though, minus 008.

2:25 I thought his character was based on Naojiro Abashiri from Go Nagai's Abashiri Family. His metallic form especially looks like the skin off form of Naojiro in the 1991 Abashiri Family OVA
