Every drink in "Wake in Fright"
Australian classic Wake in Fright is perhaps best known for its kangaroo hunt scene, but even that can’t compete with the sheer terror of witnessing a man knock back about eighty pints of warm beer.

1:58 The sheriff seems to be thinking "Yeah... you're one of us, now. Welcome to the Yabba, mate."
Honestly one of the most frightening movies I've ever seen despite not ostensibly being a horror film and featuring zero supernatural elements. The fact that it's so *real* made it a harrowing watch, having grown up in a region similar to a place that was shown in the film. The fact that *everyone* was pressuring the main character to keep drinking with them, and kept buying him drinks even when he objected, is portrayed as some kind of dark force of nature making him do it is both extremely real and terrifying. One of the select few films that both make me wanna swear off drink forever and have a pint whenever I watch it at the same time. Truly incredible. And there's no hokery to it as well, it's just the local version of hospitality which is sacrosanct. If you don't drink you're weird and an outsider, fuckin' have a drink *mate*.

Too much beers and too much kangaroos is certainly the recipe for a great movie
this movie is a perfect description of a hard drinking town in the 70's. My dad says that 70's Queensland was rough as guts, with people being thrown through the plate glass window on a constant basis...

I think the movie is meant to be set in the 60s, as the book was written then, but I'm sure the 70s weren't much different out there either way. I've lived in Longreach and that town feels like it's been the same for 50 years.

Yeah, that's what I thought. There's a very rare 30 degree pan in the opening sequence and the pacing is superb. It has tremendous cinematography and editing, and reminds you what you can do without CGI and with a great screenplay.

A true masterpiece of cinema.. I just can't understand how anyone can drink so much beers at a time. Not even alcoholics gulp down beer that repetitively.

This was from the time of pub early closing legislation in some Australian states. Bars closed at 6 PM, which gave the working man just one hour after knock off to enjoy himself. This equates to drinking as many beers as possible in a short time.

haha! I'd like to drink that movie. I mean watch it! watch it!
Yes that was the point. The society with no women found solace in beer, and fighting each other for human contact. In Chip's case, he drank real beer on set...all day. He didn't seem to be affected by all that alcohol. In one bar scene he couldn't get one line delivered the way Director Ted Kotcheff wanted it: 'have a beer!' Kotcheff wanted him to deliver the line forcefully, as if a beer was what John Grant needed but didn't know it, but Chips could only do it amiably. Kotcheff had Chips do it again and again and again...until finally Chips cracked because he couldn't see what was wrong with the way he was doing it. This time, pissed off, he shouted angrily 'HAVE A BEER!'...and Kotcheff said 'Cut. Perfect. Thanks Chips!'.

I’m an Australian female from the city and this is not an exaggeration. I’ve never seen men as drunk as at the end of the first day of the Gabba Test. I don’t know how they manage to transport themselves to the local pubs for more beer and can tell you every detail of the day’s play. That includes all the mistakes by the umpires. It’s both funny and frightening.
Woulda been faster to just show the 14 minutes and seven seconds when no one is drinking. Nah seriously tho thanks for posting it. Greatest film of the Aussie New Wave!
