Thought I’d mention that the cowboy hat Knuckles isn’t just based off of his appearance in the OVA, but more so takes the design of Treasure Hunter Knuckles from Sonic Forces Speed Battle and Sonic Dash. They share the hat because THK was also a reference to said OVA

Actually, Luigi's Z-secret costume has an earlier origin. In the official licensed comic Super Mario Adventures, Luigi swaps clothes with "Princess Toadstool" to intentionally get kidnapped in order to save Mario. The Princess, in Luigi's clothes, bursts into Bowser's castle with a bunch of bombs later and blew the place up in one of her most badass character moments ever.

1:16:07 Ike's sword, Ragnell, also got recolored to Alondite, which is The Black Knight's signature sword. The Black Knight used Alondite to pierce Ike's father in the chest, killing him, while dueling in a forest. 1:16:14 Zelgius is also the true identity of The Black Knight. Therefore, Alondite is also used by Zelgius, which is also why Ike has that sword in that recolor.

@@troykv96 Yeah, that's because the reference was originally supposed to be the Black Knight, you can even see the slash mark Ike left on the Black Knight's shoulder pads, only after designing it that the creators made the classic red/blue/green recolor for team battles, that's why all of them uses the Alondite.

1:31:26 yeah, this is definitely based on SA1 Sonic, specifically after collecting a few upgrades. You can tell from the yellow bit on his shoe, and that wristband which gives you the lightspeed dash

I've never played Project M or any of the others even if I have definitely heard about them. The amount of love and care some of these costumes got are really spectacular. Seriously Nintendo, I would pay money for most of these to be in Ultimate and the work is pretty much done for you!

Most 'costumes' in the Super Smash Bros. series are just colours, which is what they are officially referred to as. The first game to have different costumes for fighters was Super Smash Bros. Brawl with Wario.

Snake's final costume, the R-secret one isn't Big Boss's appearence from Peace Walker, but rather how he looks during the ending of MGS3 when he's awarded the title of Big Boss.

The pink Knuckles is most likely a reference to his look in Sonic’s route in S3&K. They made him look distinctly pinker and gave him the yellow shoe tops to not corrupt the hud.

One of my most favorite aspects of every Smash Bros. game is all the (often obscure) references to past video games and related content, so it's really cool to see these fan mods run with that idea.

Green Knuckles is a reference to his true form from the Archie Comics, where he becomes Chaos Knuckles, and unlocks all of his latent abilities.

I have an idea for what the costume at 1:12:09 could be. That costume could be in reference to Frey, one of Marth’s allies from the prologue to Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon. Frey disguised himself as Marth to sacrifice himself so that Marth, Jagen, Cain, Abel, and Gordin can all escape the Gra army safely. As we never actually see what Frey’s disguise looks like, this costume could be seen as a possible hypothetical idea of what that disguise may have looked like.

These outfits are really amazing. The designers of Project M have my props for sure!

I gotta say Project+ really knows how to deliver on the references and fan service, little details I love are Peach’s Alts changing her Uptilt to Fire for Fire Peach and Dark Flames for Shadow Queen.

13:30 The chances of this are pretty slim, but there might be an origin of this costume from the Mario Baseball games. In the games, Dry Bones has a few color variations, one of which is called “Dark Bones” iirc. His color scheme reminds me of this Dry Bowser recolor.

I think that Marth’s hooded costumes could be references to Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, where there is a scene where the three lords need disguises and simply put on hoods. Which is/was a meme in the fandom

I find it funny that the fruit pit skin is actually colored like a peach so he's the pit of a peach

One thing worth mentioning for Ike's costumes is that the armored costume changes his sword from Ragnell to Alondite, the signature weapon of the Black Knight.

Luigi's Peach costume actually has an earlier origin with the Super Mario World comic that was featured in Nintendo power. To trick the koopalings, Luigi dresses as peach and peach dresses as Luigi.

R.O.B. was also represented in F-Zero, not playable mind you but he's in the background in Port Town in F-Zero GX so that might be another reason why it has the F-Zero recolor.

So many costumes! Now imagine if he did this for all the extra characters in REMIX and their different costume alts!

1:21:39 Believe it or not, the trend of the R.O.B. console skins having games in them does not skip the GameCube, but it's a lot more subtle. If you use the camera to clip into R.O.B.'s head in the GameCube skin you can find, what else, but the disc for Super Smash Brothers Melee in the system!

The project M Samus Dark blue color scheme features mainly a navy color, not black. it's a reference to the federation power armor, not dark samus

Kirby’s seen different colouration in his own games. Not sure how I didn’t realise that it made sense in smash that he got different colours until now

Not sure if you keep up, but they updated him to have the guilded sword instead of the master sword as refrence to its exclusivity in majora's mask. If they used the helix sword, it would look kind of weird considering that it's a big 2 handed sword, and making it small would look weird. Fortunately however, they included it in his final smash.

Melee Sonic's Black racing suit while not looking like much, is actually a reference to Shadow's racing suit Sonic's Z-alt is in fact SA1 Sonic, in fact i know, cuz i'm the creator behind that alt costume, it's SA1 Sonic with all his upgrades from said game Knuckles' Z-Alt while you are correct there, is known officially as Treasure Hunter Knuckles, coming from the mobile games Sonic Dash, and Sonic Forces Speed Battle, which served as a sort of updated and more distinct version of the OVA look

1:31:20 You are correct that Z secret Sonic is the first Sonic Adventure Sonic who fans have annoyingly dubbed Dreamcast Sonic when in reality it’s still just Modern Sonic. During the course of the game though you receive the Crystal Ring shown on his wrist and the Light Shoes also shown on his model. Plus they also shaped his hot dog shoes from Sonic Adventure art. Also the pinkish red color scheme for Knuckles is actually the color palette given to him in Sonic 3 before he was a playable character. This is also confirmed by the yellow socks he also has. As a playable character he’s changed to a deeper red and has green socks.
