Thank you for the tutorial, I just received my H9 Max and learned quite a bit from you. I'm a Wounded Warrior Alumni, Navy retiree and a couple of my Shipmates and myself participated in the purchase of this effects pedal. We have taken up guitar playing as therapy and an awesome hobby. We share the instruments at this point but wow is it fun. Thanks again.

+M Holtrop Let me know if you need recommendations for affordable gear or the perspective of someone who has spastic cerebral palsy with regard to guitar design (e.g. I find nut width very important). Also, consider alternate tunings if chord shapes prove too difficult: I am about to start experimenting with Ralph Patt's Major Thirds tuning.

Great review and quite a challenge. Even thou H9 can be used on preset basis it so much more. I would never manage to squeze so much in so little time, well done. Also: Pressing both FSs gets you a fast tracing tuner. Can be used as a looper ( looper was recently added free of charge). So apart from being fantastic pedal it can knock a simple tuner and looper off the setup. Also, owning a core or standard still allows one to try and modify each algorythm for a minute or so a day, so one can try it tweak it and only then buy it, thats daily. Then, owning a core and any other pedal means one can exchange algoritms. Not a problem for studio of course but this form factor makes two of those and only one premium a nice high end pedalboard setup. Large topic, I really like my H9 stadard with 3 extra algorythms.

As an H9 MAX owner, I have to say that the unit needs some extra hardware to get it gig worthy. For starters, you should buy an expression pedal; then you can vary parameters in real time for wah-wah, volume, etc. You'll also want MIDI switching, like a Disaster Area DMC unit, so that you switch presets with reduced fuss. Finally, I have better luck with a buffer between the H9 and my guitar; I happen to have an octave pedal with a buffer, so that works. While it's theoretically possible to gig with just one H9 plus expression pedal plus MIDI switching plus buffer, you'll want other effects. The H9 does octaves, but for polyphonic octaves you'll want a stomp box. Dirt and overdrive are notoriously fussy for guitarists to choose, where one player's dream is another's nightmare; the H9 is digital, which generally doesn't sit well for players who like analog distortion. Classic phase and flange effects are reasonably covered by the H9, but if you absolutely have to have the MXR Phase 90 tone, for example, then use that pedal instead. Don't get me wrong. The H9 is a fantastic unit. But like anything in this world, it has its limits. It excels at getting you places that you didn't know even existed, let alone explored. Apart from some technical errors in the video, Guitar Interactive doesn't even scratch the surface of the unit's capabilities. Check out videos for the Eventide PitchFactor, TimeFactor, ModFactor, and Space pedals. All of the those algorithms are available for the H9 units, and all included with the H9 MAX model. Looking at the separate pedals gives the player a much deeper understanding of the H9's capabilities.

One possibly significant quibble is that the reason there's no difference in tone when the pedal is "bypassed" is because the pedal lacks a true bypass. You still go through the A/D and D/A conversion even in bypass, so it's always affecting your tone. And that's my only complaint about the pedal. Otherwise, it's gorgeous.

EVENTIDE is the end of the journey for pitch shifting/De-tune and is just about the very best for reverb's and delays. For $500 (which is still cheaper than individual pedals) the H9 max is hard to beat IMHO.

Seems like it would be a bit fiddly to use in a live situation. I've been toying with this or the Strymon mobius. Which would you think is the most reliable, in my experience any thing related to computers and phones has the possibility of crashing, has anybody had any bad experience with either unit? I'd like to see reviews of gear after a couple of years of gigging use, not just out of the box, I know that's a big ask :)

+Jack Beale Guitar Hi Jack, i think technology has started to reach the point where the old days of crashing are much less likely. The eventide is the type of pedal you have to set up during rehearsals specifically for the set list you're playing. Its a pretty amazing piece of kit though! I'd go and play one in a shop near you. Thanks for watching!

There's a series of harmony effects, many of which include two delays as well. Check out the PitchFactor videos; all of those harmony algorithms are included in the H9 MAX. If you buy the H9 Standard, you get Crystals and H910/H949; if you buy the H9 Core, you get the H910/H949. You get a free algorithm to add to the Standard and Core units, and you can buy others for around US$20/each for most.

+Phill PT Really? Thats interesting! I never could bring myself to like the Eventide Eclipse and when I played the Avid Eleven Rack I found it cold. Recently I bought an Eleven Rack and tried putting the SPDIF output into the Cambridge Audio DAC I usually use on my computer (its nothing special, bitstream consumer shite) but the output came alive, way better. Most of these digital products these days don't have any kind of output stage to speak off, its all surface mount, built to a price by people who do digital all day. At least Strymon make analogue gear using the same tech so maybe have a better grasp of it? Persoanlly I didn't like the Big Sky as I could hear lots of artifacts and poor sounding impulses (particularly on the Choral reverbs) and there is no digital output - I mentioned this to Strymon and they have taken it on board. I also asked why they don't make their gear rack mounted or in plugin form - that interested them too, so who knows! :o)
