I left an abusive marriage 7 years ago, and this song just hits me right in the soul. This is exactly how I felt the day I packed a bag with nothing but my laptop and a few outfits and left everything else behind. I was terrified, but hopeful too, and this song manages to capture everything I felt in that moment. God it makes me cry every time, but in a good way. I'm *free,* and I'm never going back to those days.

She said in an interview that she she was so inspired in the middle of their tour that she recorded this song in a bathroom with the recording devices she had that time. That’s why you can hear the imperfections in this song, like unnecessary sounds coming from her throat during pauses. You can also hear that she was crying towards the beginning of the second chorus, reason for the crack of her voice at the end of the second stanza. This has been, by far, the most raw and vulnerable song I’ve heard from an artist. And of course the rest of her songs are amazing too. In my case, I had to take a break from listening to Evanescence because every song holds personal, intimate meanings and it’s hard not to protect yourself from the pain while you’re listening.

You're joking right? Try to record yourself or someone in the bathroom and then compare it to this. She might have recorded it just so she doesn't forget it, but it doesn't mean that this isn't a studio version. And those "voice cracks" are often made on purpose to feel more genuine and emotional. This is recorded in a studio.

I don't care how good your microphone is, it can't record studio quality in a bathroom, lol! I'm sure she got a rough recording in a bathroom just to not forget it. But this is a studio recording. I love the imperfections because I also know that they're not random. That's how she meant it to sound. She has such an amazing voice...

You didn't offend or upset me at all, it is your opinion and I totally respect it. Though I think Amy Lee wouldn't do such thing unless she has a good reason for it, maybe having a child and taking care of a family was too much on her, or it could be another reason that we don't know of. My love for Amy and Evanescence is endless though, they will be the greatest for me no matter what. Thank you for replying and for being very polite, I really appreciate it.

As a person who struggles with mental health. Her music makes me feel and hits hard and deep. I don't know what it is. Her songs like this just hit me in the heart. Beautiful song. One of my favorites.

DAMN. Even that I stopped to hear them like 10 years ago or so, I always say "she's my top favorite vocalist ever" Even tho I heard Mariah Carey, Cristina Aguilera, Sia, etc. Damn, her voice tone is just increidbly amazing and deep, that's insane and her range of course is absolutely amazing, she sings high notes with such power and deep, with a right technique. She will always be my fav vocalist of all times.

For a vocalist that goes beyond the usual pop techniques, check out Floor Jansen, especially her last album with Nightwish but also pretty much anything she's done. Gorgeous, delicate, operatic, intimate, belting, growls… she does it all with character.

This song makes me feel deep emotions that I thought I was over with. He will always be in my heart, but he hurt me emotionally and mentally. Great song!

I remember when this album came out. My sister was so excited to get her hands on it, and I didnt even know who "Evanescence" was. Man am I glad she blasted her 2000's speaker set in her room! :D

I instantly fell in love with this song after hearing it the first time. One of their best songs for certain, the raw emotion and power behind every lyric resonates in the innermost parts of my core. Beauty truly can grow from the darkest and most painful areas in our lives. Thank you Amy and the rest of the band for making my life a little easier to live.

Today I sang this song to myself. It was both painful and relieving at once.

This brings me back to my teen years growing up when i sat listening to the original album with "Hello" being my favourite song. This is just magical to hear now being 30. If this music helps me like the fallen album did growing up there is gonna be alot of people helped by these lyrics ! Still to this day i go by the lyrics " don't try to fix me im not broken"

That is such an understatement specially when you ask from people who have suffered abuse no matter the kind. This song shatters all their walls to bring out the pain!

And people still talk about Ben Moody and why can't they write music together again or that Amy was a bitch and made him leave.. Have you even heard this song guys? Do you understand the lyrics? Can't you feel her pain? Propably the most raw, honest, personal song Amy has ever released (next to hello and good enough). It literally sounds like she recorded it once with her piano, got all her angst and pain out there and then put this song to rest along with her feelings..

Indeed I read that she recorded this song "live" in her studio, I mean it like it was recorded in one take, you can hear some lil noises in the background sometimes, her breathing and other stuff that give that raw feeling

Still feel sad for Ben though. It's Amy that should've left and formed her own band. Ben was a much better songwriter than her. Sadly, Ben's songs are much more effective if it was Amy singing them.

@@reayanez I disagree.. Amy was the face of the band even back then and people were listening to the band mainly attracted by her voice. There would never be a brand name "Evanescence" without her in it. Ben himself even said years later in an open letter that he did try to force her to leave but regrets doing that and would hate to have someone else sing HER lyrics. He also says in the same letter that he was being an ass to Amy during that time and she was only kind to him (I guess that confirms this song here and Amy's part of the story doesn't it?). As for being sad, well yes it is sad two people fell so apart from each other that couldnt stand each other anymore and it is sad that they were a great match musically but will never write again. However Ben did have a well deserved good amount of success after leaving as a songwriter but I still like Amy's stuff more. My whole point is in a way he got what he deserved at the time but it looks like it worked great for both of them!

@@reayanez I don't, abusive men get no sympathy from me. I sincerely hope he learnt his lesson, as he's married with a kid now. It's Amy I've always felt sad for, reading interviews of hers over the years it's always struck me as she hasn't got a lot of self confidence, that deep down she's always felt like she's not good enough, and that makes me feel all sorts of things. That kind of abuse can take decades to heal from. I think she's finally happy, and healthy, and it's about bloody time. He's done not a lot in the last decade, Evanescence are still active, and the current line up are fabulous, they just have such a good vibe going on and I love it.

Late reply. It's definitely about having a blade or razorblade to her wrists and deciding not to go ahead with it. I think she went abstract about it so as not to trigger or encourage antbody, while still telling her story of how constant gaslighting and abuse will take you to the edge.
