Ethiopia: The Sack of Gondar & Battle of Debre Sin

In spite of initially calm relations, the Mahdist state will engage in two brutal battles against the Ethiopian Empire. If one believes in the idea of a single "Mahdist War", then these two battles were among its largest, its most brutal, and perhaps its most devastating. This video tells the story of first of these two battles and, continuing the Ethiopia series, places it in a broader narrative of late-19th Century Ethiopian politics.

Lots of really interesting content to discuss with this time period. Im happy to be able to talk about this period of history from a different perspective than is usually told. If you’re feeling adventurous, be sure to check out the sources in the description. There are alot in this episode, to be fair though.

5:30 Takrur was derived originally from the Kingdom of Takrur along the Senegal river and it was the earliest West African state to convert to Islam. Consequentially the name "Takrur" became associated with African Muslims.

Great video surprised you didn’t mention when Yohannes accidentally called the Mahdist leader a chicken because of a bad translation. Some people say it led to worse relations between them which is quite funny

This entire history is Abyssinian history. Not Ethiopian history. Right after this battles with Atse Yohanis and right after they utterly destroyed any Highlander governments the Europeans proceeded to construct an Ethiopian kingdom by Assisting king menelik who was the enemy of Tigray and Atse yohanis to split Abyssinians into Tigray, Amhara, and Eritrea and turned them into colonial provinces of newly crafted European owned Ethiopia. One thing we should never forget is that the Tigrayans since the death of King Yohanis have till this day fought Ethiopians for independence. But the same European individuals continue to support the Ethiopian entity who maintains European hegemony over Ethiopia and refuse to grant Abyssinians and Somalis and other Ethiopian tribes an exist from Ethiopia.

The death of Yowhannes was the beginning of the curse of us Tigrayans living in Eritrea and our other half living in Ethiopia. Italy and menelik worked hard to make us hate each other and succeed. To this day we are the most divided ethnic group on the planet even though we know we are one people none of us admits it and we both call each other traitors.
