I remember I once saw some racist post a long list of racist stereotypes where he was mocking Africa and African culture. He ended it with "Oh, and please tell me when you have some African philosopher. I'll wait". I mean, Zara Yacob is like the Thomas Aquinas to Ethiopia. It just goes to show how much ignorance of Africa and African history exists.

The title "History of philosophy, without any gaps", certainly contains bold claim/goal but with 479 episodes it looks like Prof. Adamson is serious about it. I'll add it to my list of things I have no idea how to find time for. I'm certain that I'll listen to at least a couple of episodes.

I'll be honest, I didn't think there were any Christian kingdoms or empires in Africa. I had only ever heard of Islamic ones. It's interesting to hear how this Ethiopian kingdom was able to hold out as long as it did, especially when it was surrounded by Islamic states.

The Christian Ethiopian Kingdom had luck since the mountains were their ''shields'' and invaders hadn't much of an interest because of this. There were multiple Muslim Sultanates like the Ifat Sultanate, but they were conquered by the Christian Kingdom and due to persecution most of its inhabitants became Christian.

@Ivar Arnesen I am RasTafari, and of African descent and study the Ethiopian Tewahedo Beta Kristian culture. I certainly do not hold to the view that Africans could not build valuable structures.Those who assume such things, will find a way to spin things, no matter what the facts are. There are many symbolic, philosophic, and spiritual links between the Ethiopian Royalty, the Tewahedo church and the Knights Templar and the esoteric societies responsible for creating the Templar institution. Those societies have been studying , visiting and writing about Ethiopia for centuries. Ethiopia ( also called Abyssinia for a period),for it's part was always cautiously interested in learning from foreigners as well as sharing it's knowledge. Based on the research there is good reason to believe that the Lalibela project was done by Ethiopians with slight assistance from the Templar order. Thanks for standing up for African dignity. Bless up.

It is interesting that His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1, visited England around 1970 and was honored by Queen Elizabeth 2 and the Holy Order of the Garter, which can be traced to the Templar Order. 6:58 I need to correct you that Ethiopia didn't get that far they only could conquer the Shewa province and didn't go any further, since the war exhausted their resources and many men were killed at both sides, especially at Ethiopia's side. You should've also stated that King Gelawdewos was killed in that war right after Imam Ahmad was killed. The Abyssinian-Adal war is a well-known war and people today in Ethiopia have heard multiple stories about it. Edit: The Adal Sultanate was a successor of the Ifat Sultanate and actually originated around the city of Harar, not in Somalia.

@Teodros Joshua Uhm, No. The Adal Sultanate wasn't in Ethiopian territory, it had its own territory. Secondly, Gelawdewos' army definitely wasn't just a ''handful of men'', don't forget that the Ethiopians still had thousands of troops available while having around 100 Portuguese musketeers. Thirdly, The Adal Sultanate already had fallen during Gelawdewos' death since the Oromo's practically destroyed everything that was left of the kingdom. So don't say that the Ethiopians had it more difficult because it wasn't.

Im ethiopian too, man, jeez calm down, there are different narratives about history, unless you went back in time to see it yourself, historical accounts are never perfect. The borders we have today and concept of africa did not exist back then, it was empires struggling with each other. I think the author of this video tried to show a perspective on rise and fall of empires. In my opinion, these histories back then are not about who originated where but rather how countries today are so diverse and rich in culture, how outnumbered empire persevered despite the uneven odds.

Noone said they came from Mars it was sayed they were in southern part of Ethiopia , the just EXPANDED UPWARD AND EAST WARD into the territories of adal sultanent and abysinnian empire , What are the clear boundaries? what are the geographical lines ?what are the regions? , IT IS UNKNOWN , but for a fact they took the central city of adal sultanet , Harrar city ,diredawa city , And from abysinnia they entered into showa province , damot , and they migrated deep into the territories of BETE-AMHARA , which is dese and wollo ,

The Solomonic era was hell for the jews and other religious minorities(i.e islam) The violent spread of Orthodox Christianity during the 14th centuries affect the work habit of the people of Ethiopia hugely; working days were limited to few days in a month. Peoples changed their mind set and gave most of their working time to prayers, religious celebrations and many cultural festivals. Skillful people who were engaged in Metallurgy & artifacts got insulted and downgraded to the lower social class as the Christians(specially the Amharas) thought it is the work of evil spirit. Civil war among peoples with different religion or culture went for long and destroyed the working class. After the Solomonic Dynasty that Queen Judith had fought against returned to power in the 13th century, wars and prosecutions against the Jews & Muslims lasted for nearly four hundred years. In the late 13th century, various Muslim sultanates on Ethiopia’s southern border fell under the hegemony of Ifat, located on the eastern Shewan Plateau and in the Awash valley. The Ethiopian Emperor Amda Siyon (1314-1344) waged wars in all directions-to the Red Sea in the north, unincorporated areas in the south and eastward against the Muslim state of Ifat. He established strategic garrisons to consolidate the newly conquered regions, creating a system of gults (btw you can just call it systematic slavery via taxation) or fiefs, in which the holders of a gult were paid tribute by the gult’s inhabitants. His heavy taxation of exports, especially of gold, ivory, and slaves that were transshipped from Ifat to Arabia, met with resistance. Amda Tseyon and his successors replied with brutal pacification campaigns that carried Solomonic power into the Awash valley and even as far as Seylac (Zeila) on the Gulf of Aden.He also put down a Jewish rebellion and his great grandson, Negus Ishak (1414-1429), continued the fight against the Beta Israel and built churches on the ruins of their synagogues. Though the Ethiopian ruler Zarra Yakob (1434-1468) was given the appellation, Exterminator of the J ews, he failed to eliminate the Beta Israel as a threat. His son, Baeda Maryam (1468-1478) massacred many Jews & Muslims and forced other to convert. Warfare and persecution continued on an off. In the 16th century, Muslim forces conquered large areas of Ethiopia. Negus Claudius (1540-1559) succeeded in driving the Muslims out and then took revenge against them for aiding his enemies.

the darkest age was started after the Oromo invasion who destroy the great civilization which can be compare with the western cities such as Lisbon, Florence and who disappeared almost 28 indigenous ethnic groups such as harla, gafat, maya,... so the Oromo pagan invasion makes our country backward and uncivilized until 21 century
